Jay reacted to Church in GR86 Finally Spied
I almost missed rather important bit. Where is "normal" handbrake? Helloo electronic one 😕
What's next .. supra-alike no MT option?

Porsche?
In my eyes boxer in twins has only one characteristic by which it's above alternatives. It allowed for car to look better, as in higher engines + current pedestrian safety regs in other engine layout cases would ask for supra-ish fat bulb up front, instead of low ferrari-wedge sleekness. On other accounts .. COG from engine alone is overrated, powercurve nothing special and many complain about torque dip for it, and pure performance/higher rpms imho are easier to design in inline engine imho, with potentially lower weight rest being same.

The boxer engine gives the BRZ/86 its character. Putting in an anodyne in-line four would ruin its appeal, as far as I'm concerned. BMW engines are great in BMWs.

Would be fun if two Yaris 3 cylinder engines could be stitched together to form a short boxer 6, sitting right behind the front axle....

Jay got a reaction from Angelina in Lockdown fuel consumption
Because of absence of traffic jams during lockdown, fuel economy of my '17 GT86 improved significantly. My daily commuting distance is about 31 miles, which used to cost me about a gallon each working day. Over the past two months this dropped to almost 40 mpg. That's a decrease of 22.5%. Also the fuel prices dropped significantly, so there's extra money in the pocket. It can't be spent, however, as the pubs are closed.

Jay reacted to Gray in What is this stuck to my window ??
Although it looks like some aftermarket thing it's actually the standard DAB aerial fitted to the later models. Not the most attractive addition.

The best thing about being bankrupt is that she won’t ever see a penny from me. So she’s not going to ever benefit financially.

Jay reacted to BOBEL in GT86 Racecar build
With the engine torn down it was time to tackle the mountain of RTV that was on everything in sight. A combination of the three below with various types of scrapers and brushes was somewhat successful, with enough patients it would eventually take most of the RTV off a surface, and the remainder would come off with a pressure washer but it wasn’t giving the super clean finish I was after.
The other issue was the casting on the engine block and front cover are very rough from the factory and suffer badly with oxidation and no amount of chemicals and pressure washing at close quarters was going to leave them looking nice
So after losing the will to live, and valuing my hands and lungs I decided to send the parts off to a local guy who does Vapour blasting.
A friend had used him and he was highly recommended. As it turned out he was an absolute gent and a car nut, with a lovely 911 and BMW 2002 out the back of the workshop. I have to say his attention to detail was only what you could get from a proper car guy too, he was extremely careful to protect all the bearing journals and plug all the oil galleries.
Nevertheless I fully de-greased, and power washing all the parts again for good measure to ensure these is no small particles anywhere before they even go for machining where they'll get cleaned a few times again.
But I think the results speak for themselves, you can still see how rough the castings are, and nothing short of polishing them would remove that but they look better than factory fresh IMHO.
While at it he also de-carbonised the cylinder bowls, and each of the valves. the heads themselves will get skimmed so mating surface will be cleaned up when machined.

Jay reacted to SlowSpeedDemon in Identification request - what component is this?
Cade Bull, it is definitely antenna no 4 the one busted (figure from the car manual below), and I haven't seen any issue so far (yes the boot still unlocks when sensing the key in my pocket, but we know that is antenna no 3 which should work). I'll try to lock the key inside - but that in the evening when I'll have access to my spare key 🙂

Jay reacted to AJM in Picking my new car up from Scunthorpe later today.
Hi All,
I just thought I'd say 'hi', as I'm picking up a '19 plate Club Series 'Blue Edition' Performance Pack car from Scunthorpe today.
Pretty excited about this.
I had a red '14 plate until a rear end crash late in 2018 where the car was (surprisingly) written off.
I replaced it with a BMW M235i thinking RWD and more power would be fun.
Great engine I have to say, but the car just felt like a real let down and remote and not at all 'special' after the GT86.
Hence the swap back after only one year.
My pocket has taken a real hit, but I know this is the right decision.
Thanks for reading, I'll pop a couple of pictures up when I get it.
All the best,
Andrew.

Jay reacted to 86iain in Problems with standard jack
I use a puck with a groove in it on my trolley jack.
Bought it when I had my rcz, as the jacking points on those are made of cheese.
Irrespective of what jack you're using, I hope you're putting axle stands under it before you venture underneath.

Jay reacted to Philip in is it OK to switch engine treatment?
Alternative view: they are all snake oil, so it doesn't matter which one you use, but you'd be better off not using any. I've never seen a Toyota (or Subaru) recommendation to use any engine treatment.
