My Mk3 Astra was £1600 Third Party back in 2006. There's a few things you can do which has been suggested such as add your parents as named drivers as in their eyes the risk is split. Also you can lower your mileage a bit then add more if you need to later. Another thing I found that made it cheaper was to say it parked on the road at home and not the drive or in the garage. Looked into it at the time and all was mentioned was that people who park off road or garaged are more hassle for insurers as they are deemed to be more pedantic. No idea if it was just forum hearsay at the time but it dropped it £300 for me with all I've suggested.

    Update: Another change of mind...
Just had a call from dealer to say they are going to proceed with the repair under warranty. No real indication or explanation of why, or what's changed - I'm just relieved they have.

I think it's starting to get well known that modern engines that run such thin oil are for reasons around economy/power (less drag). Thin oil doesn't lubricate 'better' what is 'better' anyway? Film thickness and strength is directly relatable to temperature and viscosity.
I don't buy it, and the fact that some engines fail and others don't is not a reason to accept everything is hunky dory. None of these cars should be killing bearings this early on unless they have been neglected.

The one thing I would say is that I'd like to see more exposure given to the companies that actively participate. Mike @ TD, Mark @ Abbey, Chris @ Tarmac and Matt @ Cosworth all deserve to get more advertising within the club due to the way they contribute.
We should also look at doing monthly photo competitions or something, to keep people coming back as a regular thing.

Some phone pics and a very shoddy video.
Obviously, I wasn't going to take a video of me driving enthusiastically while holding my phone, but I won't have much chance to get another video made for a while, so this is the best I have for now.

It's a good article. I think some people get addicted to modifying and buy shit for the sake of it, rather than it being any improvement. Catch myself nearly doing it quite often, it's very tempting with such a big aftermarket parts availability for the 86'.

Not really an option for a number of reasons, mainly being that just "looking" at the car while it's on the floor doesn't really give you an answer as to what might need doing
After another day of what feels like arguing with a child, he's supposed to be getting back to me on my demands tonight. I have 0 faith that he actually will though...
I saw on Facebook that he had commented on things like "what would you do with $10m" and "homeless people to be fined for sleeping on the streets"...so I told him if he has time to be on Facebook answering trivial questions, he has time to come back to me on my demands...
Hopefully have an update tonight, but I've told him categorically that I'm collecting the car on Monday 12th December. He said I can't do that until he's agreed a resolution with me, yet he's the one that is stalling this whole process. The car will be in my possession again on the 12th regardless of his (or lack of) actions before then

Thanks for the advice bud, experts wouldn't be hard to come across at all. Abbey, Fensport, Tuning Developments, CGR - pretty much any trader on this forum could carry out the work
I don't know why but I'm still hoping this knob will do the right thing and just get my very minimalist requirements sorted. Until them, I am hounding the guy so that he see's me as a pain in his arse and gets things sorted ASAP
Unfortunately, he's decided that today he is too busy to do any work and has informed me he's been collecting a car from up North...great use of your time when you go away on the 12th December. I've said that unless he meets my demands for completing whatever work is left and paying me the compensation I've requested, then I'll be picking the car up on the 12th regardless and I'll begin court proceedings ASAP
Had enough of trying to be friendly and sort this amicably. It's clear the bastard doesn't give a shit

I'm seething just reading what you've gone through. You've shown more patience than me, although I do understand projects like this with so much customisation takes time but he's not even made slow and steady progress on it. That's probably the most piss boiling part, along with his attitude. Really hope you get a decent result out of this and the car gets to where you want it.

You say that a decent all season is just as good, and you're right. For UK winters an all season is probably just as good if not better than a winter. But people here don't fit all seasons either, they fit summer tyres and then slide all over the place.
Personally I've never tried an all season, but there is a very clear advantage in my experience between winters and summers in slush and cold rain. My comparison was Pilot Sport 3s vs Dunlop Wintersport 3Ds. The Dunlops were much much better until you got into double figures. In slush I was able to drive down a motorway, in control, at twice the speed of everyone else (they were doing ~20 mph in lane 1, I did 40 in lane 2). The only other vehicle that was able to drive at any speed was an ambulance who overtook me (but I'd assume they're on winters).
They weren't terrible in warmer and drier conditions either. I was able to drive quite normally in 20C heat when I left them on a bit late one year. While I wouldn't want to take them on track, they had more than sufficient warm dry grip for road use in any conditions we're likely to encounter this side of June.
All this talk is getting me tempted to get some winter tyres now...

Now that's out the way, just my 2 pence, I was originally going to get some winters, especially during the more heavier snow years a couple of years back but then the snow stopped and the winters have been somewhat mild around here over the past couple of years so I've not really bothered much but I did read up on some and the Nokians were definitely the ones I was going to get.  Luckily for me, if I need to venture further out into areas prone to snow for training courses then I can easily get a hire car through work and not risk my 86, but if you can't get an alternative (which I know some people can't since the 86 is their only car) then winters are definitely a safe choice.  It's not a waste of money if it can offer you a bit of assurance.  Hell, lots of people would say track day insurance is a waste of money....until that one time you bin, getting track day insurance is a good weight off your mind which allows you to enjoy the day more so in my opinion worth every penny so I would say the same for winter tyres.

Winter tyres have saved my car twice - once from the lady not driving to the conditions and being on unsuitable tyres I detailed above and once when I hit a patch of black ice. The winter tyres didn't stop me sliding on the black ice but they did allow me to regain traction and safely negotiate the bend the ice was on with no harm to me or the car (apart from a somewhat increased heart rate for me anyway!) The same couldn't be said for the two cars following me - the first of which hit the (high) kerb hard enough to give the front passenger side wheel some considerable negative camber and the second hit the first car. These two incidents alone make winter tyres a no brainier for me as the money and hassle they saved me far outweigh the costs and hassle associated with having them.
Chosen well there doesn't need to be any noticeable detriment to try weather performance and there are other benefits such as reduced wear, etc too. I used the Nokian WRA3 tyres for my CAT DT day in the summer on one of the hottest days we had (32 degrees). They held up to high speed breaking, the high speed bowl (hitting speeds of nearly 130mph), fast laps of the handling circuit and the first 3 sessions of the final gymkhana before finally falling off the cliff in terms of grip on the final session and earning me the 'sliddy chocolate'. However, in these conditions, and with the way they were being used, I wouldn't have been surprised to find a summer tyre had also given up at this point.
Winter and summer tyre likes and dislikes are always very subjective - I know Ross likes the Veredstein Sessantas which I thought were mediocre at best and lots of people really rate the continental cs5 but I, and I know a few others, haven't really got on with them on this platform.
It does seem from reading back through this thread that those of us who favour winter tyres have shared our views as to why they've been good (for us), offered info on the tyres we've tried, etc whereas some of the winter tyres naysayers / those who've never tried them have suggested they're pointless or made out like you're a gullible idiot to use them or want to try them with a lot of personal opinion being made out to be fact.
A shame that what could be a useful sharing of experience has turned into that imho.

This is the first time I've ever had winters fitted to a car so I have an open mind with these. I'm fully aware that 7°C and above they will wobble about a bit more and have experienced this. I drove back from work on Monday around 7pm and it was around 1°C. There was definitely more grip compared to the stock Primacy's and the car was perfectly enjoyable. When pulling away the rear did have more of a tendency to break traction when temps were higher but with fine clutch control it's fine. Tbh I found this with the worn down Primacys too towards the end.

I've always been in the camp of I'll just drive slower instead of having winters and my vRS won't have winters. It's running on Michelin PS4's which are fine unless it's extremely wet. I'm in mid Wales so when it snows it's bad so we'll see how it goes. You always still drive to the conditions and I'm not under any illusion that winters are a magic bean that lets you still drive flat out in winter conditions. I definitely wouldn't say it's a pointless exercise as I've noticed benefits already plus the plan has always been to put winters on the stock wheels then buy lighter wheels with Michelin's for Spring. So next year they'll be an option should we think we need them. Not only that the benefit of lighter wheels and better tyres will be appreciated so much more.

    UPDATE FINALLY
Hey guys, sorry ive been lazy with the forum updates, here's an update for you.
So, lets wind it back a few months.
    Build udate that was due to be come 'very soon';
I brought some STATÜS Racing full Carbon Ultrasuede Ring-GT Bucket seats, and they are fantastic. They're abit snug for frame, could've done with the Ring GT-X size.
The reason for me not posting the update was that I was supposed to receive a carbon centre console at the same time, along with some smoked valenti revos. However this didnt happen as my supplier had let me down and I couldnt be arsed to do a build update just for the seats.

This lead to me near enough not using the forums for a long time and just using the facebook group as its alot easier when access to a laptop / pc is limited.
Nothing catastrophic happened to the car, that isnt why I wasnt posting haha! ( until 2 weeks ago).
As above, two weeks ago i developed a horrible noise under my bonnet, i hadn't a clue what it was,  but it didnt sound happy.
Turns out it was just an injector seal.
I had the noise diagnosed at fensport. Whilst i was there I had a good two hour chat with Adrian, and we've decided to go a little mad as the car is with them anyway.
    Step One-
Get my Litchfield kit off ( and sell it to Tashan)
    Step Two-
Fit AVO turbo stage 4+ ( with some.new bits on it that could be a first for the kit, I don't know much about it but its gonna be special)
    Step Three-
If the price is right, fully forge internals
    Step Four-
    Upgrade Fuel System
    Step Five-
    Add Water/Meth injection
    Step Six-
See Dyno Graph of over 450bhp

Sorry for the lack of updates, Ive just been lazy😂

Forgot to add, I hit 160 on a privately owned site, resulting in my seibon wing generating too much downforce for my booting. I know have to 4" long cracks going towards the back of my bootlid and curling over the edge. I'm currently trying to decide which carbon bootlid to buy as a replacement 😂
