Smudge's supercharged V8 build

Recommended Posts

Few small updates today. Picked up an 18mm rear ARB from Stu on the owners forum

And also started work on the bells of the front brakes. To begin with, they were an anodised gold colour that has faded over time

And I wasn't a big fan of the colour anyway. So I began to sand them down ready to be painted

1st coat of metal primer

Hope to get a coat of paint on them later tonight

Only 2 issues with these new brakes:

1. I can't get my hand inside the wheel to clean behind the spokes, so I'll have to take all 4 wheels off to clean them. Although this does have it's benefits, meaning that I can get inside the arches and clean everything up and also keep on top of the brakes to make sure they stay looking this good

2. I may crash on the motorway as I know I'll be looking in the reflection of other cars to my side as I pass them to see the new shiney buggers!

Not sure when they'll be on yet, still a bit of work to do with the rear discs needing to be redrilled and I'm waiting on new bolts to attach the bells back to the brake discs

Unfortunately they won't be here for a few more days now :(

Bit of fault on both sides, but due to the Scooby WRX having trailing brakes (caliper sits behind the axle) and the GT86 having leading brakes (caliper sits in front of the axle) the calipers are now essentially upside down due to the differing piston sizes

Wouldn't be a problem if all the pistons were the same size, but due to the design, the calipers will be upside down as they are now.

Luckily, they haven't left Nottingham yet so the guys at Brake Caliper Specialists are going to get on them again tomorrow, swap the bleed nipples and crossover pipe round to that everything will sit the right way up for the GT86.

Although they knew that they were going on the GT86 from a Scooby, I probably should have stated that they need to be built the other way...just an oversight which will cost another day or 2 :(

Oh well, best to get it right than be running them upside down!

When's it being fitted? I'll be very interested to see your feedback as I've just bought one to be fitted when my coilovers are fitted bit I'm now wondering if I should leave it off.

Technically, it is fitted lol

After the OEM drop links decided to f**k up, I fitted the bar anyway in prep for the new drop links pictured above. I'll have it connected this weekend so will report back then. Car feels like a boat at the back right now :(

So the 18mm ARB and robust rear drop links are all fitted now

Instantly feels a lot stiffer on the rear and although I haven't really pushed it too much the turn in seems much sharper than it was before

New STi style front splitter and rear bumper add-ons fitted over the weekend

Courtesy of Chris @ Tarmac Sportz, great looking kit for very little cost in my opinion.

Fitment on the front splitter is spot on, the rear add-ons need a bit of extra sticky stuff to make them perfect but you can only see a very very slight gap between the add-on and the bumper if you're looking very close at them

The side skirts need to be stuck onto the car and I didn't have any stuff to do this with so will leave them for another time for the bodyshop to do

So after I spent all day Sunday taking the stickers off and deconatminating thee bodywork, I get a call asking me to go on another Rally next bank holiday weekend for free because the video we put together was so good...

So, some more stickers were sent out to me and today I spent a few hours doing it all over again!

Started off with some nice beading from the coats of Collinite that I put on at the weekend

And then it was sticker time. Had a few missing including my numbers so she's a little naked right now, but put them on anyway as I had the time to do it

The numbers and a few other stickers will be with me next week

You'll also notice some work around the bottom of the car...I finally got round to fitting my Bottom Line side steps from Tarmac

Using Tiger Seal and a load of cardboard to wedge it all into place while it cures overnight, hopefully I'll have some nice strongly fitted side steps for Japfest tomorrow morning

Came back from the office to find this

I can only assume that someone has knocked/stepped on it as Tiger Seal doesn't just unstick itself. Pissed off is an understatement

So I got some masking tape to bodge it back together so I could drive home

She's now undergoing surgery overnight again to get it ready for the rally in the morning. Good news is that the correct number turned up (they sent me 69 before)

So from one side she looks alright

20150521_190817_zps2rlcys3f.jpg

But I won't be able to clean her before we go...so a bit f*cked off right now. Hopefully it sticks and I can use plenty of quick detailer in the morning

So, today I took a deposit on my Sprintex 210 Supercharger kit, with the intention of replacing it with the bigger Sprintex 335 kit in the near future

Just to give you an idea, this is how they compare size-wise with the 210 on the left and the 335 on the right

And it makes a CRAZY noise!

The engine will have to be built to take the extra boost. Hopefully everything should come together in the next month or 2 so watch this space!
