I will do a few "tests" and get back to you on that Keith Joking aside, with the other mods that are on the car already, I fully expect to get there much quicker. My inspiration to get one, other than talking to Stan at Snetterton was this thread on the US forum: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27647 Some good reading in there 1 Keethos reacted to this
JamesP1991 222 Report post Posted June 3, 2015 Just a quick update... I paid for James H's GFB Pulley kit today, so that should be with my by the end of the week. I will be fitting the MCB myself this weekend and will see how easy the pulley kit is to fit, as if I can do it myself I might as well. If not however I will just send that in with the FD to be fitted together at the garage I will be using. I am a bit of a ham fisted oaf, so it might be a better option. Next on the list after that is finished is a lightweight Ali prop and then after that I can get stuck into some proper N/A engine mods again, along with a stoptech brake kit. JamesP1991 222 Report post Posted June 3, 2015 Thank you Nige it is much appreciated If I find myself stumped when fitting the pulley kit I will be sure to PM you my number, at which point you can give me some of your wisdom! I am more concerned about losing the key that the crank pulley sits in to more than anything. Let's see how I go!
Guest Report post Posted June 3, 2015 Thinking about it, you may be better off getting the garage to fit them then, because you may well struggle with the alternator pulley also. You wont lose the key in the crank if you make sure you dont pull the flange part/oil pump drive all the way out. You may struggle getting the bolt undone though?? The WP pulley is a doddle, you can at least fit that one yourself.
Keethos 842 Report post Posted June 3, 2015 Turning Development struggle to get my crank pulley off, even Rich from RRG struggled but they eventually prevailed. They couldn't stop the engine from turning or something.
nikndel 509 Report post Posted June 3, 2015 Keith would that have been undoing the central bolt?
Lauren 2259 Report post Posted June 3, 2015 Keith would that have been undoing the central bolt? Yes.
nikndel 509 Report post Posted June 3, 2015 And the pulley is secured to the crank by a woodruff key?
Keethos 842 Report post Posted June 3, 2015 No idea sorry Nik
JamesP1991 222 Report post Posted June 3, 2015 Ahhh so they were unable to get the torque on the bolt because the engine kept rotating with the action Keith? I think that would be an issue as I won't have the hardware at home. If it was simply a case of a stiff bolt I'd be fine, as soon as I got my 16 stone frame hanging off it, it would shift! But yes getting it done at the garage along with my FD will remove any risk on my part I guess. The guy specialises in Subaru's and I've known him a long time so I trust him to do a good job. nikndel 509 Report post Posted June 3, 2015 Just keep a eye on that pulley and bolt that's all
JamesP1991 222 Report post Posted June 3, 2015 My main concern was taking out the key with the pulley as I said above, as apparently they are a bitch to then seat back on to the crank. Plus you then obviously have to line up the pulley correctly to sit in to the key.
nikndel 509 Report post Posted June 3, 2015 Can this be done easier by removing front of car and radiator? 1 HowardMet reacted to this
Keethos 842 Report post Posted June 3, 2015 Most probably, then you could get an impact gun in there to loosen the bolt. 1 HowardMet reacted to this
Jamie_GRMN 177 Report post Posted June 3, 2015 You shouldn't have any issue with losing the key, will take a fair bit of effort to get it out. The bolt will be tricky, ours are tightened up to 210Nm on the ZR engine (may be slightly less as the torsional vibration on the crank is less on the FA20), a rather heafty air impactor is used to remove them if needed. I would expect a rather long bar will be needed 1 HowardMet reacted to this
JamesP1991 222 Report post Posted June 3, 2015 Yeah a gun would make the job so much easier, but taking off the whole front end will be a major pain in the ass! I'll take my chances with the bar, all about leverage haha! 1 HowardMet reacted to this
Varelco 211 Report post Posted June 4, 2015 Great thread James just read it from start to finish. That engine is gonna be revvy as hell, youll have to post some videos once its all fitted! A quick question for you, seeing as you've had the Tein luxury masters on for a while now, how do you find them? Whats the ride comfort like compared to the standard set up? Does it affect the handling characteristics of the car at all? Ive shortlisted the Teins as they seem to have the closest spring rates to the stock set up and I just want to find out a bit more about them. EDIT: With regards to the crank pulley, I've heard some people just stick the car is 6th gear and get a hefty breaker bar on it? More importantly though( as its already been mentioned), is to ensure the crankshaft pulley spacer doesn't come out when you remove the pulley as its an absolute nightmare to refit apparently. see here: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26386 Cheers, Matt 1 HowardMet reacted to this

I am surprised you went through the suffering of reading all 8 pages! I have tried to be as informative and detailed as possible when it comes to the decisions I have made with the car. Once the FD and pulleys are fitted I will do an onboard video to show how different the car feels with the aggressive ratios and lightweight pulleys/flywheel working together. I am expecting it to feel much more eager and aggressive which is what my aim for the car was, especially as FI is not the route I want to take. Since fitting the TEIN springs last year I have nothing but praise for them. I spoke to Dave at Fensport when my car went in for work and he said they hold up so much better than the Eibach's based on feedback from customers. It can get a bit "crashy" on really bumpy roads, but that is because I have the stock shocks inside still. With the 25mm drop and the slightly stiffer spring rate, the car is definitely a lot more "pointy" on turn in. Since putting on the front strut bar as well it has given me so much more confidence. I feel like I can place the car better and therefore be more aggressive with the front end. But on daily trips, ride comfort is still great and the next step will be to buy adjustable Bilstein or Koni shocks and put them inside the TEIN springs. That way I will have essentially the same set up as those on coilovers but just without the ride height control. But for me I don't mind as I find a 25mm drop is enough to improve the look and handling of the car, but also I then do not have to worry about those obstacles on the road like speed humps etc. In regards to the pulleys, thanks for the link. I already knew about that thread, it is why I voiced my concerns about they keyway and doing the job myself. When the kit arrives let's see how confident I am feeling, but I reckon I'll just send it with the FD to the garage to get done together. 1 HowardMet reacted to this
Varelco 211 Report post Posted June 4, 2015 It was a good read, you've been very selective about what you've done with the car which seems to of paid off nicely. Thanks for taking to time to give me a review! That's great, pretty much exactly what I needed to hear, looks like I will go down the Tein route. Looking forward to seeing the rest of your build, I like the reasoning behind keeping it n/a. 1 JamesP1991 reacted to this

Looking forward to seeing the rest of your build, I like the reasoning behind keeping it n/a. Thank you Matt! Well I tried to make it unique when it came to the aftermarket parts used, instead of going down the same route as others, just to give it a bit of individuality. I have emailed this week a company in the US that specialises in FA20 tuning, so will see what they can offer and for what price. They currently run a 13:5:1 N/A race spec FA20 with all goodies inside which revs to over 9000rpm for time attack so I am intrigued to see how they can help. If they can ship a more reasonable N/A package over to the UK which doesn't involve sending the block over to them that would be a massive plus. All the FI guys have got so much choice out there for reliable big power, whereas us N/A guys either have to wait it out or be a bit imaginative, so let's see what options they can provide
JamesP1991 222 Report post Posted June 6, 2015 So had its obligatory 2nd year service today, even though the cars only done 17k miles. Due to the confusion of originally charging me £179 (they thought it was a 1st year) and then correcting them on the day, they reduced the price of a full service from £299 to £249. Passed through with no issues and they even cleaned it for me afterwards, not that there was much to to as I did it only 1 week ago. The service guys at the garage loved the sound of the car though. They said they don't see many modified 86's in my area, so having a fully catless UEL setup turn up cheered them up for the day Going to see if I can get my MCB fitted this afternoon now! Thought id take a quick picture before it got attacked by the blossom tree again anyway! 1 Keethos reacted to this
JamesP1991 222 Report post Posted June 11, 2015 So had a bit of a lull here recently as I'm saving up hard for a couple of big mods towards the end of the year! The first being some N/A engine modifications and the second being Phantoms ESC, I just need confirmation from them that it's compatible with RHD cars. I literally had zero time last weekend to fit my MCB, so if I find time this weekend I'll do it, but if not I'll just send it in with my 4.55 FD when that gets fitted. I am just waiting to finish the month first before I fit everything as I spent that money on an impulse buy most recently... Namely a GFB lightweight pulley kit courtesy of James H. Alas it finally arrived today after a bit of confusion from the courier. They are a bit dusty but after a good old clean they'll be ready to bolt straight on the car. As previously discussed I don't trust myself to do it, so will send them in with my FD and MCB to get fitted in 1 big go! Here are some pictures (excuse the quality): So by the start of July they will all be fitted and I look forward to feeling the difference! I will report back once I go for a drive and I will give some feedback guys!
