richardcarman reacted to AJ91 in Buying Subaru BRZ/GT86 advice/owner info
Hello everyone! Next summer or this autum/winter ill be buying my dream car. Either a GT86 or BRZ 2012/2013 as a summer only car. Don't want to ruin this one with the salt that we have in Sweden.
Currently owning an Audi A5 which I daily drive all season but before the salt eats it away I will sell and put the funds towards the car I've always wanted.
I just wanted to check with you guys who own these what to mainly look out for when buying one and what differs the two, brz and gt86?
I hardly see any Subarus with rusts even if they are 10 or more years old so im not worried about that and will try to look for one which has been out in the summer only, could be hard though. Hows the reliability otherwise on these? Cars do have weaknesses and as im buying a slightly older model it would be good to know what to look for.
I just love the look of these with a slight drop and 40/45 profile tires and driving an Audi now with 20 inch 30 profiles its going to be an absolute dream not having to look like a drunk person avoiding every little drop in the tarmac.
I will most likely keep it stock except for Suspension and wheels (225/45/17 would fit)?
Also hows the service costs like? I'm looking to get a manual for sure.
Anyway thanks for any help and info you may have that could help me in my search.

Not sure. I'm thinking either the roads local to me are particularly bad, something's not right with the car - be it bushes links or something else I don't understand, or these particular coilovers - but they aren't cheap, and other people sing their praises.

It's a work in progress - just had a weekend in the Lake District, and driving on the smooth roads was great, but on the little back roads here in Yorkshire I'm having to avoid a lot of my usual traffic-light-dodging routes because it's impossible to make smooth progress. It's embarrassingly bad.

£300 is too cheap for secondhand TE37's, unless you struck very lucky.  They should be double that for ones that need a refurb. TE37s in good condition would be more like £800 secondhand.
The newer ones have Rays engineering on the rim. The older ones have it on the back in the insets where the wheel mounts to the hub.
Staggered is not cool if you care about driving. If you're more into aesthetics it could be okay, but depends what it is.
    Any pics?

No, it's not. The reason the torque dip is felt is that BHP drops due to the loss of torque. Look at the new BHP graph, it doesn't drop. You wouldn't notice it, especially on the ones with a 4.3 FD.

Toyota/Subaru don't do a DCT, it's too heavy for this platform too I'd imagine. However, as per PH:
The god-awful automatic doesn't get these power and torque boosts, so right-minded sorts will of course still avoid the so-called '6 Super ECT' unit. There's something interesting here though: Toyota also lists a '6 SPDS' gearbox in the price list, of which it currently makes no mention of in the update details. SPDS is, a la Lexus IS F, 'sport direct shift', which in the rorty V8 uses torque converter lock-up in second gear and above to speed up shifts. It blips on downshifts as well, and has paddleshifts. Is this coming to the revised GT86 and might we at last consider something other than the manual? One to watch.

We chatted about this at the Essex meet this evening.
Not sure I agree with Knightryder - that torque dip is accentuated and is a huge weakness which I hoped would be addressed in this annual upgrade - obviously 'annual' in Japanese means 4 years development and 1 year 'let everyone know'.
Like? - stronger block with redesigned pistons/rods plus plus plus. New petrol pump. Half-decent rear wing. Subtle styling changes rather than the anticipated "whole body redesign" (which would have made current model's value plummet like a stone)
Dislike? - no 'high performance' version using the Toyo collaboration with Cosworth. Nothing to address the global demand for increased power. And these 'upgrades' are all aimed at the manual pudding stirrers, nothing to address the auto paddle pushers. A great shame, a little more concentration on a DCT version of the autotrans would galvanise their global market, as the current version is a poor attempt, in my opinion.

Jenson is always good value. The biggest issue is still Evans. He doesn't really add a lot and I still wish he'd just turn it down.
The McLaren bit was just someone going 'wheeeee' for five minutes, and the guest sections fall a bit flat. Thing is, Clarkson was a pretty good journalist. Evans isn't.

The star in a car section was DIRE, those two could have been audience members and it would have been more interesting. Two completely opposite guests and the questions thrown at them were on the right track to steer it towards cars but it was so painful to watch, as if Chris had never presented anything in his life.
The first 2 minutes of the show was Chris getting the audience rattled, again completely pointless. Do that off camera and get on with the content. Just more content that Dave can cut out when it needs to shorten the program to fit it around adverts.
The muscle car start had potential to be pure car porn but it got silly with guns. Ragging them around the track would have shown perfectly well how each car handled. The Nomad review was fantastic and really enjoyed that. Reliant section? had to force watch that as it looks like more filler for Dave to cut. I didn't even want to go near Extra Gear because it was hard enough sitting through an hour of that.

I'm hoping this was the bbc trying to not change too much early doors, I hope after a few shows they will settle down and do it there way. Chris and Matt are car nuts so just let them do it their way and things will improve.

I like to wear gloves as my hands get sweaty on trackdays. Just got a new pair of OMP kart gloves. The expensive motorsport ones are flame retardant and hence expensive. Kart gloves dont need to be so usually cheaper for a equivalent pair in terms of features and comfort.

pic of them on my thread

I've got a pair of Alpine Stars gloves around £80. I wore them when I was racing with other cars on track. I think your hands do get sweaty in a 20 minute race which is where they would help grip. But over the space of a max of a two minute run, not really necessary. Your better bet is to buy some decent boots. Alpine Stars are the best I reckon.
