Given that spark plug change on our cars due boxer layout is major PITA and costs a lot (original procedure even involved lifting engine out for that, though possible to do without too as some DIY guides shown), and due these engines being high compression/high volumetric efficiency ones, i guess toyobaru decided from get-go to use expensive iridium (IIRC made by Denso) plugs to extend replacement intervals for those (my speculation/guess). I'd say to just go with OEM. Not much if anything to gain by hunting aftermarket replacements.

I wouldn't skimp on plugs, just because HKS ones are a bit cheaper. Unless you need a different heat range due to forced induction, then stick with OEM. There is nothing to gain from fitting 'upgraded' plugs.

Simply in eyes of subaru engineers pros outweighted cons. Obviously harder maintenance cannot be intentional. Yes, boxer engines are very wide, which makes some maintenance tasks harder/take more time & effort, but they also do have their pros, most probably now about. PITA plug change done after lots of miles hardly should be reason to shun boxer engines in general. To me another con of wide boxers - limited clearance for front suspension & wheels resulting in reduced max wheel steering angle without rubbing - seems bigger drawback then some harder to do maintenance procedures, but in same way that's not enough to dislike these cars or these engines as a whole.

When mine went in for valve springs, toyota quoted me £85ish for spark plugs (price of parts). While I didn't have them done, I did check the price elsewhere and found these:

    https://www.demon-tweeks.com/uk/search/shop-by/q/Spark%20plug/vaa__vehicles_code/59171d13d55cf/
    (HKS iridium)

... Four of these is also £85 ish, so I'm thinking that they might be a similar spec to what Toyota themselves would have used (though I don't know, of course...!)

    @James18
Morning All.. Had mine returned to me yesterday following the spring replacement; took it to Platinum in Trowbridge and was really impressed with the service and the way they dealt with it. I still haven't received a letter yet, but wasn't going to wait for one - so I phoned them up earlier in the month, they were really helpful and slotted it in within a few weeks!
It had its 6yr service recently, so plugs didn't need to be changed, and the engine has only done 35k so I didn't need the clutch either. Few new pipes, air-con refill, oil filter etc (as per the norm). The technican said that the coolant was replaced (obviously) - so it shouldn't need changing on the 10yr service, which is good to know. Speaking to the technicans (sorry if I'm repeating what might already be on here), they have to be trained especially for the task - there aren't many of them that can do the job, and I think they can only do one at a time too because of space in the workshop. Nathan and Joe have done a few between them now though, and I haven't got any complaints; no leaks yet!!
Thanks to Darrell for organising it too - he's been giving me daily progress reports/images and a visual inspection sheet, and they stuck absolutely to the timescale that they gave me originally.
So, all's well that ends well!
I've attached a few images - just the ones that aren't likely to just be repeats of what's come before. I'll report back if I have any problems, in the meantime...
Nice to be able to swap back in the Yaris/Aygo/whatever it was, for my 86 - and a blast home

I got a good deal from bris in 14 for our 86. Only reason I would not use them or recommend them myself is that I did my homework on PCP which I took as they would pay 1k towards the car. I said I was new to PCP which I was but they did not know I did my home work and so lied 3 times to my face and when I told them such the finance guy quickly changed his words. I informed the manager and toyota about this and won't use them myself

Lack of Torque puts me off wanting to put a bike engine into my 7. I know people who have bike engine kitcars and are amazing on track but thats it. not fun on the motorways or doing anything more than 100 miles in a day. Most I know with bike engines sell them after only a year or so.

Michelin stealth blades are about £6.50 per blade from Costco if you have membership or know someone, very good blades.

Well yes - very nice. But you could perhaps use a slightly larger parking space ;-)
Kudos for the 86 being your 'sensible' car though :-D.
Reminds me of the lady I saw on a forum with a Lotus Elise. She got pregnant. Sell the car? Noooo. She just found a pushchair small enough to cram into the luggage bay. Respect

Fitted Sat the same day I picked up my new H2. the wheels nuts I have in red did not fit as they gave me the size for Toyota and not Subaru so getting them soon
and it looks tall as they had just been fitted and not settled before taking the pics.
