Japanese reliability?

Recommended Posts

Well I tried Google and apparently a 546B is a photographic tripod. I can see how that could cause braking issues if wedged under a wheelarch. You don't know any photographers with a grudge do you?

I was going to say something about ABS as mine did this and occasionally flashes the TCS light up and then keeps the EML on for a while if I give the car a boot

Mark at Abbey diagnosed the error code as something on the ABS ECU, but it's so temperamental that it's nothing really worth worrying about

You could always try a different dealer that maybe a little further away but still able to help you?

Did the engine ECU light illuminate?

I've been playing with mine to see if I can mess with the ABS. With the whole system disconnected completely, I got no power steering, no DI and no ABS obviously. I had the ECU, TC and ABS lights illuminate.

When I removed the electronic module from the hydraulic block of the ABS Unit the car performed perfectly with DI and PS and just the ABS and TC illuminated.

The ECU is looking for a signal from the speed sensors and the ABS unit, if not there it cuts the performance of the car and the PS, I assume to alert you and make the car safer/slower. If the CAN is present, but the signal is incorrect it just illuminates two lights??

Judging by this, it could be your electronic module causing this. I can assure you, you will not lose braking, just the ABS/TC aspect if this happens again. I tried my brakes with some heavy feet and can confirm the fronts lock very easily, but they definitely still work.

Obviously you want it sorted, but I don't think you or your wife are in any danger as long as you know it's happening?

Interestingly, a guy in the States is racing with the stock ABS fitted. It bombs out if abused with heavy braking and constant trips over the rumble strips!!

Thanks. All she did was reverse out of a space. Two of the lights are Amber, the other red as in do not drive.

She needs a reliable car for work & was due to do 300 miles in it tomorrow.

Part of the reason she parted with a 10 year old but mostly reliable Alfa was because of this. Gloomy doesn't come in to this.

Fecking furious does.

Every car can't be perfect. My colleague had an Alfa that was in and out the garage every week. A second one had an Alfa that performed faultlessly. It's always pot luck.

The real test is the service the dealers offer. There shouldn't have been an issue getting a loan car that's for sure.

No point getting too cross about it though - could be worse - mine ended up in the body shop after a week having the rear wing pulled out because some daft pillock drove into me... . I'd trade for a couple of warning lights...

Hopefully this will get sorted and then it'll be plain sailing...

What you are saying is of course very true.

We expected, based on perception, Toyota to be a paragon of virtue in terms of buying & reliability/ service but from the get go, they've done their best to reverse out perception.

That's been an unwelcome surprise.

Fingers crossed this is a blip. The could be this, not 100% sure that dealer response is very concerning though.

Neither of us have the time, patience or inclination to chase faults in a Friday afternoon car.

PS. Toyota Customer Services didn't come back to her.

That's poor, and to be honest dealerships of any brand are a fairly mixed bag. I'd probably go so far as to say that these days I select the brand based on knowing a decent local dealership or specialist rather than the other way around. Thus rather arbitrarily where I live based on personal experience and that of friends I get to choose from BMW, Jag, Ford, Saab, Toyota or Peugeot. But not any of the VAG brands, Vauxhall or Alfa...

Something about the market is dysfunctional though, because I don't notice the poor dealerships going out of business...

No news today.

Wife was promised updates but didn't get any. She called around 15:00 to chase, was promised a call back but nothing.

Great!

Anyway, whereabouts is the ABS Module / Pump and is it easy to change without cocking anything else up / doing damage?

The unit you ask about is just behind your N/S headlamp. It is an aluminium block with a plastic module bolted to it. It has one big multipin connector and all the brake pipes go through it.

I got a call this morning about my car (it's my wife's so she's hopping about that now).

Seems it was an issue with an electrical connector to the pump / module.

On Toyota's insistence, the connection was broken, cleaned (like someone else mentioned, the under bonnet is lathered in green goo) & remade.

Tested, no further issues.

Fingers crossed then!

Glad it's sorted, they could of handled it a tad better and stuck to their promise of calling you back. But that's dealers for you. Nothing worse than waiting around for a call you never receive. Hopefully your opinion on the 86 isn't tarnished too much. It genuinely is a reliable car.

Oh dear. Wife just got a call from the service receptionist who didn't know the service manager called me.

Saying something about the solenoid being run in test mode & Toyota telling them they weren't to change the pump.

So, after the assurance I got from the service manager, she's now worried that they've not actually fixed anything.

And it's me that gets it in the ear.....lol.

Hate mixed messages - I'd ring service manager back and get him to put what your wife was told in context...
