long-gone got a reaction from Lauren in Grover's ginger jap
Got the call yesterday morning - all done.
New bottom end supplied and fitted. Battery was also replaced under warranty. While the engine was out I also had a new clutch and spark plugs, effectively free of labour charge.
New engine and clutch plus transmission fluids and the new billies installed a couple of months ago, it feels like a new car again - including having to run it in again.
2.1/2 hour drive back home was uneventful, ran well.
Now have to decide whether to keep it... I've lost a little faith, but still love the car.

Update: Another change of mind...
Just had a call from dealer to say they are going to proceed with the repair under warranty. No real indication or explanation of why, or what's changed - I'm just relieved they have.

That's good news. I think a few of us were scared they were going to do a 'Subaru' on the engine warranty.

Sorry, not sure how you can draw such a definitive conclusion from that.
We all know people who smoke for decades with no obvious ill effects, until they die of lung cancer. Doesn't mean smoking's okay.
FTR mine's been serviced on schedule with Toyota fluids. It was even at Toyota Platinum Bath on the Monday having coilpacks replaced - they gave it a Winter check including fluids. Four days later developed death rattle and went bang a few miles later.

P0351 returned for me after last week, Motorline finally have decided they will replace the coil pack on Thursday.
This could get to be quite an expensive issue when these cars drop out of warranty.

I use this for shows in the summer when I fancy a change from the 86

long-gone reacted to S18 RSG in MFactory Final Drive Kits in stock at Tuning Developments for GT86 and BRZ
A remap is completely unnecessary. Changing the final drive physically changes the mechanics of the drivetrain. A higher final drive is, after all, in effect just a bigger cog which turns a bit quicker with less effort, but has the downside of lower potential top speed. Think of it in terms of a bike and it makes more sense. The larger cog makes acceleration easier, but you can only go so fast before your legs can't keep up. The smaller cogs are harder to turn, but allow you to go much faster top end. The engine, in this analogy, is the person. Changing the cog doesn't make the person fitter, or faster, just means their effort produces different results. Tuning the engine (going to the gym) means the engine can go faster, but has no bearing on the drivetrain.
In simple terms, the engine tune has basically no bearing on the performance of that part, and does no more to the car than it would do with a stock FD.

Is this the infamous chirp?
I think I may get it, but it's never been a big issue for me. More character building.
