Kodename47 446 Report post Posted August 11, 2015 Impressions:I really want one. I bet for most this would be a much quicker car point to point than the 86/BRZ. Also more comfortable, practical and obviously much faster. Possibly better looking too. Honda got this right, Type R lives on!
Bobbynog 9 Report post Posted August 11, 2015 Ummmm....... ........personally........not so sure........ ......looks like they took a Civic and got a blind bloke to chuck some plastic at it. Not to my taste. A few years back had an older model.....liked the way it went but had too many little niggles to ge another one. Nearly got written off after a late night motorway smash - wife driving - not her fault - when we finally got it back from the repairers just didn't want it anymore - felt like a bad luck car. rob275 1817 Report post Posted August 11, 2015 I don't agree that it looks better, it looks too plastic. But agree with your other points.
will300 812 Report post Posted August 11, 2015 The new CTR is without doubt a very good hot hatch. Possibly the best of the current FWD market. However like all hot hatches they aren't really a sports car, while I can say it is stupidly fast and handles reasonably we'll it just didn't feel involving as the 86/BRZ. Hell it took me 3 tests drives and several days thinking about buying one (I even have a deposit placed on one atm) before I realised the 86/BRZ is the best budget sports car out. If I needed a family car / car with 5 doors and a massive boot, then no doubt I'd have one in an instant but I'd still miss the BRZ. Oh and for the looks, I quite like it but then I like aggressive looking cars with a massive wing p.s. I also couldn't stomach spending £33k on one.
Bobbynog 9 Report post Posted August 11, 2015 p.s. I also couldn't stomach spending £33k on one. 33k! you've gotta be kidding. A hot hatch should be a wolf in sheeps clothing..........this looks a little.......dare I say it.....rice
Nicebiscuit 655 Report post Posted August 11, 2015 Too expensive. Last Type R was a bargain. This one is more expensive than a BMW 135i. Which is a very good car, and RWD to boot...
will300 812 Report post Posted August 11, 2015 Its £29k for the base model or £33k for top spec with metallic paint. Which is still not exactly cheap.
Kodename47 446 Report post Posted August 11, 2015 Sits around the price of the Golf R, but is quicker and handles better. £32k for the GT which has all the toys. £30k for a standard R. For pricing, they actually got it right IMO. It's a superior car to the rest of the hot hatch fleet; VXR, RS Megan/Clio, GTi need not apply....As for the chucked on plastic, apparently it is all functional aero
Foulsmell 120 Report post Posted August 11, 2015 As a previous Type R owner I was waiting for this car. Performance and looks aside when I found out it was £33k I totally discounted it. My last gen Type R was £16k new there is no way this is twice as good. I started looking and dropped on my 86 which is more classy in the looks department then the new Type R. You shouldn't really compare these two cars as there is a huge price gap between them and they are in a different genre. Will be a good used buy in a few years. 1 Mark-in-Stoke reacted to this
Dan7954 35 Report post Posted August 11, 2015 Thought the last one started at 18/19k new?? Prices go up all the time.. I remember when baked beans were 6p lol. I think it may seem high but reflects the costs of similar cars in this bracket which no one seems to complain about.
Lauren 2259 Report post Posted August 11, 2015 I would wonder if the Megane Trophy would come out on top. Seems to have the best balance in respect of the research I do (all I do is read and watch car reviews). It's a compelling choice. I love it and I'm impressed that the high point is the chassis. I owned a DC2 many years ago. That thing was like a scalpel, had an engine to die for but the highlight really is just how precise the chassis is. I know the new Civic Type-R is less about it's engine, but I don't hear many negatives about it, but that the focus seems to be placed on the chassis must be a good thing. Kodename47 446 Report post Posted August 11, 2015 The last gen CTR wasn't appealing, it was a hot rep mobile. The EP3 was good but I'm an ex B series CTR owner so a good chassis and engine was the only way to tick boxes. It's not got the soundtrack of old but it outshines that with brute force and surprisingly the ability to deliver it even on some daft roads. The chassis is also a big player in that. The major downside is that the +R is only on or off. I would like the throttle changes without the firmer suspension for b roads. As with all cars, the prices have been going up. When I was looking at the 86 I was shocked that the base RS Megane was £25k. The tech on the GT puts it in the right market and it's got way more than the FN gen. I doubt anyone will buy a standard R anyway. The only one to really compare it to is the FD2 CTR, which was also well into the £20ks if imported new.
S18 RSG 429 Report post Posted August 11, 2015 I basically had my heart set on one of these from the moment they announced they were making it. I signed up for every newsletter, got all the info needed etc. and only kept my last car for so long as I was waiting for it to come out. When they announced it was £30k, I instantly turned away and looked elsewhere, but given the amount I had chased one, I went to test drive one. I've driven both a supercharged FN2, and a turbo EP3, both were more exciting, and for my money, faster than the new one (certainly the bum cheek dyno said so). It's lovely inside, and it's a million miles away from the EP3 certainly, in terms of gadgets and comfort, but for me, it's lost so much of its character. Honda were always known for these screaming, high revving engines with super high bhp/litre, high redline and naturally aspirated. I honestly would have preferred Honda to stick with their guns, and go for ~280hp from a larger NA engine, and keep the spirit alive, but going turbo for me, makes me think they almost gave up trying to develop a great car, just for the sake of beating the competition on paper. It's part of what makes the twins special. Screw what the spec sheet says, just make the car everyone wants. I can't imagine what focus group they found which said they wanted a boosted Type R. Surely a spec savers appointment is needed stat! 1 Omer86 reacted to this
Kodename47 446 Report post Posted August 11, 2015 I can't imagine what focus group they found which said they wanted a boosted Type R. It was either that or not make one. Blame Euro emission regulations for that, the K series just wasn't able to meet them in N/A form.
Foulsmell 120 Report post Posted August 11, 2015 There has been a thread about this topic on Civinfo for around 2 years. After thousands of posts of EP vs FN and EK vs FD and all that nonsense, the conclusion I have found is if you want one then buy one.
Keethos 842 Report post Posted August 12, 2015 It looks alright from a distance but close up, it looks really tacky to me, too many slap on plastic bits and for some reason the rear wheels look tiny compared to the fronts. I'd be interested in test driving one but if I had to go FWD, I'd probably go Megane RS.
AJ124 118 Report post Posted August 12, 2015 In this months evo (September) they have a group test with the CTR, Megane Trophy 275, m135i, golf r and the Leon Cupra sub 8. On track times the Honda beats the megane but sat in secondplace, half a second back of the Leon. They feel the civic is a bit too uncomposed on typical British roads, but great on smooth roads. It's worth a read if anyone is interested in the civic.
remal 85 Report post Posted August 12, 2015 I like it a lot. But would I have it over the 86. No. For me the positives over the Type R is better looks on the 86, RWD Only thing I would like is the power of the Type R
Omer86 40 Report post Posted August 12, 2015 Definatly not a looker in my opinion, but worth a test drive at the least.

JamesP1991 222 Report post Posted August 13, 2015 It's not for me really. I think it looks good from some angles, but awkward from others. Anyone know how heavy they are now??? At 30K I would say they are a bad car to buy brand new, but will make a fantastic used purchase in the next 2-3 years on the used market. I would walk straight past one in the showroom, go to a used car specialist, pick up a low mileage EP3 and strap on a load of power in the form of a turbo kit for a lot less of the price of the new car. I still want to go and test drive the new one though, just to see how it feels
