Thanks folks. GT86 ordered

Mine's Red. Think it suits the shape. As well as 2000GT, there are shades of Ferrari 250 swb in the haunches. (Ok you have to use your imagination a bit)

A lot of modern cars are a bit flabby and heavy looking so you need a dark or metallic shade to hide the metal a bit. The 86 doesn't. It can carry off a strong solid shade so even yellow and white look good. Not many cars can carry off yellow.

The website is all over the place. The configurator is still showing 17' alloys on the Primo... Hope the dealer staff are on the ball about the current spec else there might be disappointed customers...

One of the things that drew me to the car was it's size. So many so called sports cars and sports saloons are just ballooning in size! Just have a look at the likes of the new 4 series compared with the old 3 series coupe for example? Dwarfs it in size!

The 86 is tiny, and it feels small and nimble on the road. I was at my grandparents the other day, and their neighbour is a bit of a petrolhead, he owns a modified FN2 Type R. I offered to let him sit in the drivers seat and he was amazed how low to the ground you feel. Pulling up in traffic on a regular basis you get a feel for this size and low seating position, as you have to look up to the hatchbacks sat next to you.

I think that is what makes this car so great. In a world where cars in each generation get fatter, heavier and bigger, the 86 bucks that trend with a low centre of gravity, small dimensions and low 1250kg kerb weight.

That's exactly why I bought it. It was this or a Fiesta ST - in other words arguably the best current affordable FWD and RWD sporty cars. The Fiesta is actually lighter, does handle brilliantly and day to day possibly a better drive with all that torque. It's brilliant and of course much cheaper (cause they've built a lot)

But.... It's still a Fiesta so it's a tall car with a pair of Recaros plonked in. Something is not quite right about the driving position. The Toyota nails it, and the view down the bonnet with the bumps over both arches is pure classic sports car. Apart from the obvious influences from Japan, the other car it hearks back to for me is the Porsche 944 - similar in packaging - and in its day regarded as one of the best front engined RWD sportscars...

Plus... Ones a fiesta, it may be a fast fiesta and very capable; but it is still a fiesta

Exactly. Plus I expect there will ALWAYS be some variety of excellent small turboed hot hatch available, how long it'll be possible to buy a new car like the 86 I don't know. It's an anachronism in many ways...

However I'm not going to slag it off - it's a brilliant thing in its own niche and I'm really happy to see Ford doing these cars well.

Anyway I put my money where my mouth is. Could have had an excellent low mileage nearly new ST for £12.5k. That is an absolute bargain. But I thought the extra money for the Toyota worth it. (So did the Ford salesman privately - lovely guy -but don't tell his boss :-D. )

That is what Ford does best though, cheap fast and reliable cars. In terms of bang for buck stretching back to the escort Cossie they have pretty much the market sewn up.. It's why there is such a massive following for fast fords past and present today. Parts are cheap, they can be tuned to go like stink and are cheap to buy!

Well. Stephen Hawking was wrong. Time doesn't only stop at the event horizon of a black hole. It also stops when you know your shiny new Toyota is down at RRG, not half a mile from your front door, being primped, prodded and polished, ready for delivery.... Which isn't 'til Saturday.

It's like being 5 again waiting for Xmas...

Congrats on your purchase! Puzzled how you got away with a 2 week wait though, I've been waiting for mine for 3 months...

Probably because I wanted a bog standard base spec one, and very few others do, I expect. I expect Toyota GB sighed with relief that they'd found a buyer...

Nothing wrong with bog standard base spec

Not for me - I'm allergic to gadgets... :-)

Was funny a few years ago picking BMWs off the company car list, everyone else went for littlest engine, biggest wheels, highest spec. I did it the other way round... :-D.

I think it's simply different folks, different strokes and all that. I do too many miles not to have all the comforts and ticked nearly £5K's worth of options then got a sound install which added a whole lot more plus active suspension as well. But it's your car, have it how you want it. :)

The Primo will be lighter, but only very slightly. Re-sale time may be a killer though unless you plan on keeping it a long time?

Absolutely. It just happened that this car came with all the stuff I wanted anyway... Certainly not doing it for weight loss! As for resale - I usually find it makes little odds - pay less now, get less later. And the plan is for long term ownership - I hope.

I may well make an exception for sounds though... Waiting and seeing, but may end up with something a little beefier in due course.

If you want to get some miles on it running it in, you could drive to Woodbridge and back tomorrow, make sure you don't just sit on a motorway at constant revs, you want back roads so you get lots of gear changes etc.

Differences:

No spoiler

No keyless entry

No HID headlights/LED running lights or washers

No Climate Control

This one unusual as it still has std 17" wheels

Does have new sharkfin aerial and tyre pressure sensors

Congrats, enjoy! Straight a few laps of the 'Lauren Triangle' is in order I think. ;)

Wossat then? If you mean cat n fiddle, then back down to Bosley crossroads and back to Macc then yep - done that already four up. This is a family car after all...

First impressions - every bit as good as I expected and then some. And that's bearing in mind I'm only using the first 4000 rpm. Basically it's fun even going slowly.

Worth every penny.

What on earth is that green gunk they stick all over the engine though? Almost had kittens when I opened the bonnet. That and the smoke coming out as things burn off... So much for new car smell
