fpan 0 Report post Posted May 24, 2015 Hi, I am thinking of buying a GT86 and test drove an automatic one today; I am not a fan of automatic cars and never owned an auto before, I didn't even know the GT-86 is produced as an auto but I was so surprised! Gear changes were fun with the paddle shift and as a daily driver I think I may enjoy it better compared with a manual, I have to test drive a manual though to be able to compare. The only thing that put me off was that the rear diff had a slight weep as a result of which dust was stuck on the rear diff cover, something which you normally on cars (of any sort) with higher mileage. The car in question only had 24k miles. The other 2 manuals that were also for sale by the dealer were clean as a whistle. Special K 442 Report post Posted May 25, 2015 Fpan, welcome. The auto is a joy to drive, in my experience. Stick it in 'Sport' and 'Manual' mode, use the paddles or the gearshift and you'll enjoy it just as much as any manual.. and it's quick, 0.2secs to change gear. It's also got autoblip, no need to heel and toe... nice!! A weeping rear diff is no great problem, they're very easy to work on and any dealer worth his salt will fix that for you before you take delivery. Bear in mind that the ratios on an auto are different than a manual (fifth gear auto is the same as sixth gear manual, so you've got a seriously good 'cruising' gear..). Yes, we are a friendly bunch and there are frequent 'social' meets here in the south east. I'm in year 4-5 of my warranty as I'm >60K miles. Just means a lot less is covered and a lot more is from your pocket i.e. wear and tear. What this actually means in real terms I've yet to find out. Lauren, what mileage do you do monthy? I do ~2k miles a month and at the moment I use mostly my wife's 120d but if I buy the GT86 it will not stay in the garage but get used. If the auto is much more economic in reality than the manual I am tempted to get one but I'd have to drive a manual as well to see how they compare. The 6-speed gearbox of my previous Forester STi was one of its best features so if the 86's one is as good (or better) I can understand where the manual guys are coming from. Lauren 2259 Report post Posted May 25, 2015 I do about 4-500 miles a week, mostly work. Then add to it with long trips all over the place for weekends and holidays. No need to drive a boring diesel. The manual gearbox is lovely. A lot of work went into the gearbox feel. I don't think the auto is going to gain much in terms of economy versus what you lose in driver involvement. What you have to remember is that the auto has longer gearing so this is where it will gain some in economy but obviously lose in performance in comparison. Guest Report post Posted May 26, 2015 Welcome aboard fpan. Don't worry too much about a weepy diff, as long asits not around any of the three shafts it's an easy fix. As already mentioned, make sure the warranty service record is up to date if you care about such things. As for your decision on Auto or manual, remember, the market appears to have more Auto's available than manuals.. therefore, you should be looking for a decent discount. Hi Fpan, I just drove from Manchester to Gloucester this morning, went as fast as I could with the traffic, got 37mpg. You'll see between that and 40mpg I would say. My car doesn't drone at all with a non res Milltek and 2nd cat delete. It's no issue at all I've driven to Germany and back and also Italy and back.
