Is it going to be worth it?

Recommended Posts

Evening all, signed up a while ago after realising there was two forums from the other side, but was trying to hold off posting until I actually recieved mine.

So, I'm Jamie and wanted an '86 since I saw the final iteration of the FT-86 II at the Geneva motorshow, thought it was going to be just a pipe dream until I could afford a used one but then got my dream job straight out of uni as a Quality Engineer at Toyota's engine plant so took the plunge on a brand new one after my three month probation period was up.

Ordered a pearl white one at the beginning of November with black leather/alcantara (wasn't orginally planned but I'm fussy and didn't like the red on the cloth seats) and the touch&go. But now I'm on the third delivery date after being pushed back and back with no reason or explanation just "we're trying to get it as soon as possible" I'm starting to get fed up.

So is it really going to be worth it?

In my wisdom and just to prove i'd be able to afford the car I set myself the cars monthly cost a month as a budget to by some mods ready for its arrival; Compomotive MO5's 17x7.5 in a custom satin deep pearl purple with blue flash (to match the centre caps) designed by myself and the refurber, BC coilovers with 5fr/5rr spring rates, whiteline roll centre/bump steer correction, front and rear camber adjustment bushes/bolts to allow some adjustment, if not deemed adequete these will be replaced by adjustable arms and finally a samco intake + k&n mainly to get rid of the sound generator cak that was the only thing that wound me up during test drives. Got a cobra overpipe as well as was unused and at the right price, the rest of the exhaust will be a custom single exit built by the specialist that looks after my GT4.

The reason I posted up now is that I stupidly worked out that if I had got an Aygo from the dealers current stock they had the money saved would've got my GT4 through a winter hibernation with a suspension/running gear/brake rebuild ready for a summer being a weekend + trackday toy with a possibilty of having a bit of fun in the RRG TSS.

Anyway I've rambled on enough now, and if it ever arrives/I don't tell the dealer to shove it, I look forward to meeting you all at meets etc :)

Ohhh and good job well done to the founders/admins etc that have built this forum, one of the best I've been on, especially the mobile version :D

Heres a pic of the JDM Celica GT4 WRC that the '86 should have replaced by now:

Welcome aboard!

Wow, you are prepared, I like your style. I reckon when you've got it lowered on those wheels it's going to look cool. Brilliant that you've got all the mods ready! :)

I got mine with the Milltek exhaust and induction kit from my dealers, but am only just now getting round to suspension. It might be an idea to learn the car stock suspension wise as that way you've got some comparison and an idea of how it's intended to handle before you put the coilovers on.

Oh and yes, it will be worth it! :)

Cheers for the welcome :)

The mods were a coping mechanism during my wait

Milltek is probably my second choice for the exhaust, but not a huge fan of twin exit, so its either a stupidly expensive blitz or a custom one that I can get looking and sounding exactly how I want.

The plan with all the mods is to get the run in period and up to another 1000miles done before swapping anything, this should allow me to get to know the car and also if any warranty niggles arise I don't have the hassle with the dealer.

Yes its well worth waiting for, sorry to hear about all your troubles hope the dealer is going to give you some sort of discount plus get parking sensors ect free, would you consider a used demo, nice TRD Style one here with full leather for £25k

Welcome Jamie, you won't be telling them to stick it. Not after all the bits you've purchased to tide you over until it arrives ;)

hopefully we can see you at some meets, TSS and possibly JAE (Here's to hoping they get it to you by then)

I already get a fairly hefty discount through work so I really doubt they'll take more money off unfortunately, not a fan of the parking sensors either, hopefully they'll chuck an armrest in though at least :) I have tried getting a TRD ducktail thrown in as I prefer it too the standard spoiler but they've turned round and said because its not actually part of the TRD cars bodykit its classed as aftermarket and would void my warranty so can't supply it, personally think thats crap but hey ho.

Like the sound of the TRD you posted, if they push the date back even further I may go for it

Waited long enough already, couldn't wait any longer, and if the upgrades are to be available to current cars then why wait? best bets to buy one now and if you like the upgrades in the future buy em then :)

Cheers Rob, I'm sure the bits would be easy to sell, well apart from the wheels, they can go on the wall :)

I was hoping to make it to the Fensport meet on the 15th, but its looking like I won't have it by then :( JAE could be a possibility ;)

Void the warranty on what exactly? lol

Hi Jamie and welcome.

It may void the warranty on the boot lid if it's not fitted correctly but that's about all,or poor fitting allows water ingress and damages something.

To say it would void warranty is wrong, and it is a toyot part a TRD spoiler.

you should still come along on the 15th if you can make it, you can try out my turbo :)

Hi Jamie and welcome! Sounds like you're a true petrolhead... as Ian says, you should still try and make the Fensport meet, as you'd get a chance to try different suspensions etc. as well as different inductions.

No idea what I would void the warranty on with the spoiler, was yet another question my dealer has avoided, I have just given up all hope with them. Riceburner I shall just make the trip over to you for TRD bits :)

I should be collecting on the 15th so won't be able to make it due to that, although this will probably change so may make the trip in the GT4.

IF I decide to go forced induction my mind is already made up and it will be a positive displacement supercharger :D but not nesecarially one of the off the shelf kits...

Cheers for the welcomes guys :D

Welcome to the club Jamie!

Glad that you've finally came out of the shadows but sorry to hear that your having problems, would you mind if I asked which dealer your dealing with?

Love that fact that you've started to buy your mods and you've not even got the car yet, I did the opposite, I kept the car pretty much stock (bar a drop in air filter and some minor cosmetic changes....plus a reversing camera  :D ) for the first year, then I went out and got mod after mod starting with a Cobra exhaust, ecu remap, light weight pulleys, more gadgets and more cosmetic bits.  What else you got planned once you've add all those bits?

It would be great if you could make the Fensport meet mate, but even if you can't, there's plenty more events lined up so stay tuned! Pun intended  :P

Thanks for the welcome, the dealer I've been dealing with is Lindops in Queensferry, they do all our Toyota members discounts for those at the Deeside plant, and in all honesty have been a pleasure to deal with and are still putting up with my moaning about where the car is, just want an answer... fingers crossed I'll have it by this time next week :D

Going to be fairly tame after I've got all these bits on, need to find a cover for the remaining exhaust hole after I go single exit, would be rude not to get a remap though to have some gains from it all. Forced induction would be a perfect plan, love the supercharger whine, but the GT4 will be eating all my spare cash so kind of rules it out. Once I get bored with the slippy primacys will end up with Conti 5's as well :)

I will definitely be at meets in the future, love the social side and actually meeting and chatting to like minded people rather than spewing onto the internet

There's an exhaust cover available in the states.

If you're ok with tuning, ECUtek allows you to self tune now. I'm certainly happy to help out with that.

Yeah I've seen the one in the states, waiting on a response about price + shipping over here :)

I'm confident in my theory knowledge of tuning, not competent to try my skills on a brand new car though. Cheers for the offer of help :D

Not much longer now, buddy.

Still haven't heard anything so I'm assuming delivery will be Friday/collection Saturday.

Althought the cheeky bas***ds have sent me a customer satisfaction survey already for the recent purchase of my new car

They know the extras I want but at this point In time I'd just rather have the car and adding more extras will probably just delay it even further during PDI...

Mine doesn't even seem to be getting preferential treatment for the PDI either considering I've been waiting over 5 months, apparently it will just go through the workshop whenever they can fit it in
