talking of new 86's I happened to have a look on drive the deal last night to get an idea of current best dealer discounts and realised you can get a new one for a tad over £20k. Jeez I thought, that's a great price for such a fun car, and I must admit I got very tempted to buy one until I remembered I have one already

Great article, and I find it great that Toyota UK are positively welcoming modding through things like this.

Does anyone else like this show? I know its been running for a decade or so now, but I still find it fascinating - less so from the Mike Brewer 'dealer' side of it (not least because with labour added they'd never make a penny), but the way you're shown how things work and how they can be fixed/replaced in a very easy to understand but non-patronising way by Edd China. Personally I think it should be shown in schools to encourage more kids into engineering/mechanic directions as it shows how skilled interesting and intelligent the work can be when done properly!

Captain Duff got a reaction from Keethos in Problems with "cold" 2. gear
Thankfully I only had problems when very cold in getting into 1st, but 2nd was always fine (and it is 2nd that is the problem for a lot of the boxes, but by no means all). Since getting the very cheap Whiteline positive shift bracket fitted in September at my first service this has now disappeared completely and it is now the smoothest gear box I've ever had the pleasure to use I'm glad to say. RRG also swapped under warranty to the newer stick design and that also no longer buzzes at high revs. I would say that if anyone with a MT hasn't got the Whiteline, for £40 it has the be the best bang for buck mod you can get for this car.

But for the OP, there is plenty of discussion on the '2nd gear issue' on other forums and there have been some successful solutions in terms of adjustments and gear box oil changes that have helped greatly. Get as much of this info as you can and return to your own dealer with some suggestions for them

Captain Duff got a reaction from Keethos in Frozen side windows - don't panic!
On the basis that there are some newer owners who will no doubt experience the panic of getting frozen and completely stuck side windows given the falling temperatures (had my first ones of the year this morning) then just a heads up that you don't need to panic or call a dealer  - once things have thawed out enough you can reset the mechanism by holding down both window switches on the drivers side for a good 10 secs (making sure the child window lock isn't on) and then holding them up for a good 10 secs and you should find everything gets reset and starts to work again properly.

I would also recommend this stuff - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-x-Einszett-Gummi-Pflege-Rubber-Care-Stick-100ml-Rubber-Treatment-Roll-On-/191409793896?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item2c90e9ab68 - as a preventative treatment for the rubber seals between the window and the door frame as it should help prevent most freezing if used regularly (have lost mine that I got last year so have just got some more ordered!).

£967 for a set of 4 OEM rims fitted/balanced with Yokohama Winter drives last year from RRG Macclesfield courtesy of a deal Richard the service manager sorted out (he is Riceburner on here btw). Not sure he is doing similar this year but it is worth asking him - there always seem to be some spare OEM 17" rims floating around the dealer network as the TRD model with 18" wheels gets kitted out in the UK (they come with standard 17" rims off the boat). But failing that you regularly get OEM sets on ebay from owners who have moved over to after-market alloys, or of course you can look at the various places doing after-market alloy options and tyre packages as there are some good deals there too.

Captain Duff got a reaction from MikesGT86 in Ordered for 1st September
Hi Mike, and welcome. 1st September marks my first year of ownership and it's still as much fun as it was 12 months ago, it's a great car and used as my daily driver for both work and pleasure and it is remarkably practical for pottering around town, but obviously comes into its own on a nice empty A road

My own mods have been quite limited given it is a great car out of the box, but I got a Cosworth drop-in panel filter (around £35), then went for a Milltek non-res 2nd cat delete and over pipe (mainly for sound - which is great - but it does free up a few HP I believe) which was supplied and fitted by RRG Macclesfield (who can also do lots of other goodies and without any warranty problems), and then a Cusco front strut brace with brake stopper (probably minimal effect but it looks good and was cheap enough).

Obviously what you start to upgrade will depend very much on whether your priorities are cosmetic or performance. One thing I would recommend if this is going to be your only car, and particularly with you being t'up north, is a set of winter tyres (preferably on a 2nd set of rims if you have the storage space) as you probably won't want to be driving on any snow or ice in a RWD car without them.

I've kept my OEM rims for both my summer tyres and got a cheap set of OEMs for my winter set as I like the looks and for OEM they are pretty good lightweight rims (and I don't go on the track myself), but wider/larger or lighter alloys seems to be a common upgrade for many - although if you are not increasing the engine power (turbo or supercharger add-ons) then this needs careful thought as lots of extra grip with no extra power could mean a sharp decrease in fun!
