Mya X Ferron reacted to spikyone in Experience of Tuning Developments' NA package
I realise that for most of you this is going to be preaching to the choir, but after running the Tuning Developments NA package for 6 weeks or so and getting a few road miles and a track day under my belt, I thought I'd share my experiences for anyone that's considering having their car upgraded.

I had the install completed just before Christmas; I stayed in Runcorn at a very cheap hotel, and made my way over to Warrington at 9am.  The work took until about 2pm to complete, including TD's own catback and the MTEC shift springs/Powerflex gearbox insert combination.  I spent some time talking to @Mike@TD.co.uk whilst the work was being done and it's clear that he knows his stuff with GT86s.  He kept me updated with how the work was going, and also kindly took me for a passenger ride in the turbo GT86
After a couple of post-install dyno runs and a road test, I took the keys back and prepared for the long journey down the M6/M5.  Just pulling out of the estate where TD are based it was obvious that the engine revved more freely.  Spending a bit more time with the package since then has only reinforced that initial impression.  Even keeping the revs below the old torque dip the engine response feels more immediate.  The real benefits become obvious once you get over 3500rpm though.  Plant your right foot at 30mph in 3rd gear, as you might do on a sliproad, and the car pulls effortlessly all the way to the national limit.  Whilst you'll see a ~10% gain in peak power over a standard car, the real improvements come at 4000rpm where you have 25% more torque, and the torque level is almost constant from 3000 - 6750rpm, rather than 4750 - 6750.  It practically doubles the width of the power band, and as you'd imagine the result is like driving a different car.  You can keep the engine in its sweet spot without running it to the redline in every gear
An added bonus of the flexibility is that it allows you even more potential to exploit the chassis balance and adjustability on the road.  The extra torque means that you have more options coming out of a corner.  I was always a fan of the way that you can neutralise understeer with the right amount of throttle input, and the flat torque curve and sharper throttle response really helps that characteristic shine.
On track the gains are less obvious but still there.  At track speeds you would normally have been above the dip anyway, but at Donington a couple of weeks back we had quite a wet morning.  I didn't know the circuit, and combined with the rain (and the need to drive home afterwards!) I was fairly cautious early on.  As well as taking less corner speed, I was shifting at lower revs.  The ability to upshift early without dropping into the dip meant that I didn't feel I was losing too much by doing that.  I'm looking forward to getting back to Castle Combe at some point too.  Last time out I was short-shifting to 5th before Folly to avoid an upshift through the corner, and the improved torque curve should mean that it's not so costly to do that.
As I mentioned after the installation, I also found that fitting the NA package didn't increase my insurance premium, which is through one of the brokers in the Insurance section.

As for the other changes to the car, the catback has given the exhaust note a nice throaty bass in day-to-day driving.  It was initially a little harsher and had a slight drone at motorway speeds, but has mellowed nicely over time and is now quite tuneful.  I can happily listen to music at a sensible volume, without the exhaust drowning it out.  On track it really sings with a lovely race car note.
The MTEC springs and Powerflex gearbox insert have made a surprisingly big difference for such an affordable modification.  Cold-start 2nd gear issues aside, I'd always thought the GT86 has a very good shift from the factory.  That the springs and insert have improved on it so noticeably is seriously impressive.  It has a really positive feel, and the weight and precision are nothing short of exceptional.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend both Tuning Developments and the NA package.  The install looks great quality, Mike and Nick know their stuff, and it really is excellent value.

Hi all Matt here Iv just signed up so wanted to say a quick hello although I’m not new to the Subaru scene I am new to the brz/gt86 model so thought I’d join up.

Some of you may know be from the subaru Impreza scene already possibly  I own and run Mb developments were a Subaru Impreza breakers here in the West Midlands.
Over my time iv owned & built some crazy Impreza’s that have been either love or hate cars but decided it’s time to get brz for some testing.
I am lucky enough to have some good contacts in the business and already sourced a ideal base car direct from japan it’s currently making its way over to us now so really excited to get it and see what the buzz is with them.
I have some pretty wild plans for the car it won’t be remaining standard for long and parts are already mounting by the day I plan to use it as my personal track/race car and a good demo car for the business in time

I don’t want ramble on too much and bore you all too much so just saying hi and hope to catch up with a lot of you at a meet or other soon thank you.

Apparently fitting the MTEC shifter springs helps alleviate this. Even if they don't it's still a great mod.

    Akina Speedstars

The Akina SpeedStars (秋名スピードスターズ, Akina Supidosutazu) is a team made up from a bunch of friends who like to race in their leisure time. Based in Gunma, their home course is Akina. Named after a Japanese brand of wheel, they are among the weakest teams in the series, not having proper training and using erroneous techniques. In manga version, it is called "Spirit" as seen on the sticker on Iketani's car.

    Akagi RedSuns (Stage 1)

The Akagi RedSuns (赤城レッドサンズ, Akagi Reddosanzu) is a highly skilled team led by Ryosuke Takahashi. The RedSuns' team policy is not to race on their home course, because, according to Keisuke, they "can't get excited about it". Based in Gunma, their home course is Mt.Akagi.

    Myogi NightKids (Stage 1)

The Myogi NightKids (妙義ナイトキッズ Myōgi Naitokizzu) is a team of average skill led by Takeshi Nakazato. Even though the team is united under Takeshi, there seems to be two factions fighting for leadership, aligned with Takeshi and the team's number two driver, Shingo Shoji. Based in Gunma, their home course is Myogi. Shingo and Takeshi both show aggressive driving styles, hence why both their races with Akina's Eight-Six ended in a crash. In Extra Stage, They were challening Usui's Impact Blue and have both lost a race.

    Impact Blue (Stage 1)

Impact Blue (インパクトブルー Inpakuto Burū) is a partnership between its two members, Mako and Sayuki. Their home course is Usui. It is revealed that Impact Blue is disbanded in Extra Stage 2 due to Mako leaving for Tokyo to race there for a year.

    Emperor (Stage 2)

Emperor (エンペラー Enperā) is a highly skilled team led by Kyoichi Sudo. The entire team is made of Mitsubishi Lancer Evolutions, claiming their cars are the king of the mountains. Based in Tochigi, their home course is the one-way road of Irohazaka . Mitsuru Sudo is Kyoichi little brother and ask to be train by Takumi to drive in a two-way road and he became the best in Irohazaka but he lets Kyoichi the leader of Emperor.

    Seven Star Leaf (Stage 4)

Seven Star Leaf (セブンスターリーフ Sebun Sutā Rīfu, "SSR") is an average skilled team, and the first team to face Project D in 4th Stage, there are previous Project D victories mentioned prior to the start of 4th Stage. Based in Tochigi, their home course is the Nichien-Momiji line. Like the Akina Speed Stars, they are named after the same Japanese wheel manufacturer (Speed Star Racing).

    Todo School (Stage 4)

The Todo School (東堂塾 Tōdō Juku) is a racing school run by a performance shop owner/ex-rally driver named Todo. They are very highly skilled, with many of their graduates going semi-pro/professional. Interestingly, they prefer FWD cars, particularly Hondas, using the Civic Type R as their best "demonstration" car. Based in Yaita, Tochigi, their home course is the Enna Skyline or Happogahara.

The Todo School exclusively use parts from Spoon Sports to modify their cars.

    Northen Saitama Alliance (Stage 4)

The Northern Saitama Alliance (埼玉北西エリア連合チーム, Saitama Hokusei Eria Rengō Chīmu, lit. "Saitama Northwest Area Union Team") is a racing group made of teams located in the Saitama Prefecture. Included in this alliance, is the team that Nobuhiko Akiyama and Kyoko Iwase are on, which remains unnamed, and also includes Wataru Akiyama. They joined together to meet the challenge they knew would be coming from Project D. Nobuhiko is the leader of the Alliance. The Alliance faces Project D twice, on two different courses, the first one being Sadamine. The Alliance throws the first downhill race against Project D so that Nobuhiko can gather enough information on Takumi to defeat him during the second set of races. Nobuhiko recruits Sakamoto for the job of defeating Takumi and all of the Alliance members (except Kyoko) chip in to purchase a Suzuki Cappuccino for Sakamoto to use in the race.

Tsuchisaka Lan Evo Team (Stage 4)

A couple of Baduns in Lan EVos

    Purple Shadow (Stage 4)

Purple Shadow (パープルシャドウ, Pāpuru Shadō) is a two-man team consisting of Toshiya "God Arm" Joshima and Kozo "God Foot" Hoshino, both of whom are legendary around those parts. Based in Ibaraki, they drive on a course on Mount Tsukuba called the "Fruits Line".

    Team 246 (Stage 5)

Team 246 (チーム246(ツーフォーシックス) Chīmu Tsū Fō Shikksu), also known as "The 246ers", is a team based in the Kanagawa Prefecture. Racing in Yabitsu , they are direct rivals to Team Sidewinder, another team located in the Shizuoka Prefecture. According to Bunta and Ryosuke, Shizuoka is the center of street (drift) racing, notable for its mountainous regions (Mount Fuji is located there) as well as the Fuji Speedway. Therefore, Shizuoka attracts many racers, amateur and professionals alike.

Team 246 has many members, where representatives for a race are voted by its 31 members. The representative who will race against Keisuke on the uphill: Kobayakawa received 26 out of 31 votes, and races with a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution (which Fumihiro has made fun of, as Keisuke is an emerging FD Evo Killer). Takumi will race against 246's leader: Omiya, who unanimously received 31 votes to represent Team 246 on the downhill. He will be driving a heavily modified Mazda Roadster.

Racing Team Katagiri Street Version (Stage 5)

Racing Team Katagiri Street Version (レーシングチームカタギリ ストリート バージョン, Rēshingu Chīmu Katagiri Sutorīto Bājon, often called R.T. Katagiri S.V.) are the Second Line in Kanagawa's "Four Lines of Defense". Their home course is Nagao, in Hakone. The team was named after the real professional racing team, Katagiri.

    Team Spiral (Stage 5)

Based at Hakone Nanamagari, Team Spiral (チーム・スパイラル, Chīmu Supairaru) is the 3rd line in the "4 lines of defense" strategy formulated by team Sidewinder. Their philosophy is tuning a car to bring out its full potential to fit the characteristics and skills of the driver through heavy modification, which is often misconceived as simply buying the most expensive parts. Unlike R.T. Katagiri, the members of Team Spiral have no professional racing background and have acquired their near professional level skills from racing in the streets. The ranks of Team Spiral are unusual in the fact that Ikeda, while being team leader, is not considered the number 1 driver.

    Sidewinder (Stage 5)

Sidewinder (サイドワインダー Saidowaindā) is a highly skilled team that organized the "4 lines of defense". Their home course is the Tsubaki Line, but the nearby Toyo Turnpike may be a part of their home territory (Ryosuke's battle with Rin Hojo was raced there). There are many rumors that they might be the "fourth line" or the last team in Kanagawa that Project D will compete with. In the storyline, this team is trying to analyze Project D's weaknesses. They collect information by watching Project D during their practices and races.
