I was thinking more, would it be obvious which people are the car loving nutters?

We'll just wear our Drivers Club Hoodies. Look for a cute Cavalier (called Indy) and you will find us.

In regards to worrying about contact with other cars, seriously it's not an issue on a track day. I used to work for a trackday company (Bookatrack) and was stuck on the pitlane for hundreds of track days and very rarely (I could count on my hand) did I see car to car contact. Use a reputable track day organiser and you will have nothing to worry about in that respect.
The biggest issue with regards to track days is car to scenery contact by a large margin, but obviously it's you driving so you go at a pace that is down to you. You can get insurance, but it is not like ordinary insurance. Typically you take out insurance on value, so if you want to insure your car for say £20k then you will have a 10% excess (so £2K) and it will cost you around £170 or so. Is it worth it? Again up to you. I did when I tracked my car when it was pretty much brand new, but I don't worry about insurance now.
You will need a helmet whether you do a trackday or the sprint series. You can buy a bike helmet or you can get a car specific helmet which is fire retardant too. Covering your arms and legs is the only other requirement.
If you are not experienced with regard to going on track I would advise that you go on a track day and book a number of sessions of tuition. Whilst you could go straight into entering a sprint, there is no provision for tuition and you will also be launching on cold brakes and tyres as well. Whilst you are the only car on track at the time, it would simply make sense to get a feel for driving on track on a track day with some tuition first. One of the club days, like the one at Bedford in February would be ideal. Also it's good to get rides out with other members in the same car as you can of course learn (or not!) from what they do and how they drive.

There's a lot of information around the web, if you're really interested, you can probably find a Youtube video or something explaining it.
I'm an electrical engineer, not a sound engineer, but I'll try and explain.
In terms of some principles of how/where to soundproof, it's all about finding a good balance. In it's purest form, the idea of sound deadening is to absorb noise (imagine distortion as noise). A good example is between the inner and outer skins of the door panel. Without sound proofing, a sound wave between those two panels will effectively bounce off all the metalwork, creating 'noise'. Introducing even one layer of sound deadening means that the sound wave causing the noise will be absorbed, resulting in less unwanted 'noise', and therefore better quality sound.
The balance, in this case, is being careful not to go overboard. I don't believe there is a particular audible downside to OVER sound proofing, however, in a car, going too far adds weight. A sheet of dynamat the size of a car door weighs around 1kg (maybe more). You can quite easily imagine how someone could go overboard with this, and plaster every panel in soundproofing, adding significant weight to the car.
For the sake of getting a noticeable improvement in a car as small as ours, simply covering under the door cards would go a long way. The more you add in various places around the car, the quieter the car will be inside. You will help to reduce outside noise, as well as unwanted rattles etc. but again, remember that every panel you soundproof adds weight.

I was planning to do a run up to Scotland to see a friend in Aberdeen this spring, if I can make the dates work time off wise I'd be up for joining this.

My experience of driving my car with 5/6kg spring rate and Keith's with a 6/6kg rate is that Keith's tends more to understeer than mine. So I would say that the 6/6kg rate is a 'safer' setup as the car tends more to push on at higher speeds. There is pretty much a total lack of understeer in my car. It's simply a matter of preference, but suspension manufacturers will tend to specify spring rates that make the car retain the characteristics of the standard setup, which is towards understeer.
Can you dial out the understeer with geo setup on a 6/6kg rate? Yes, I'm sure you can, but the 5/6kg rate tends to make the car more edgy and pointy at the front end. Choices and all that.

I'm finding 6/6 with the adjustable arbs set stiff rear and soft front is giving a very nicely understeer free package.

Just to add, I can report that in around 60K miles of driving they have been faultless and that includes the EDFC Active Pro and stepper motors.

I did it when I bought them, others have too. I was involved in the initial development when three of us had them fitted to our cars. So I had a bit more of a custom setup as my rear dampers were revalved to be 20% stiffer too. I was the only one that requested a 5kg front spring rate, which involved Yukiko from Tein UK speaking to headquarters in Yokohama and getting their approval before they air freighted them over. Yukiko showed me the slightly more complicated calculations for the ride height due to the greater droop of the 5kg springs in comparison to the 6kg. There is more difference than you may initially think.

It's going to sound stupid as f*ck, but it's because of the angle of the windows. It's normal, we all get it. Just a case of putting the A/C on for a few mins.
