Tim86 24 Report post Posted March 20, 2017 Hi all, i've just gone through 100 pages of taobao search and compiled a mega list of items on taobao. Expect considerable savings and some bits you can't find in the west. If you haven't heard of taobao, it's basically one of the largest asian market websites. There are plenty of guides online explaining how to order from them, but i'll give you the lowdown. The most common way to order is to open an account with a third-party taobao agent, i use basetao.com. What they will do is purchase from the sellers, then hold your items in storage for as long as you like. When it arrives in their warehouse they will send you multiple images for quality control/confirmation, at this stage you can then decide whether to keep or return the product(s) to the seller (beware: usually within 7 days). This is all done via your account login/online interface. Once you've bought a nice selection of things, they will then consolidate it all into one package, and you can ship via Air Economy, EMS or DHL. Make sure to add a note to your order with your desired deceleration value once you have 'sent to ship', because otherwise they will declare it as a gift under $25, which is obviously risky with customs. Money can be transferred into your basetao account via credit/debit card, there is a 3% fee, lower for various other payment methods (WU etc). They will also charge a very small handling fee on items, to be expected as this is how they make their money. Obviously there is an element of risk involved when buying Chinese products, some of this stuff is pretty funny imo. Best to be sensible and avoid any performance parts listed, as mileage will vary (literally) . S18 RSG 429 Report post Posted March 20, 2017 Fair play for the amount of work you put in here. I wouldn't hesitate to buy small things (interior trim, model cars, badges etc.) from here, as even if they're cheap knock-offs, it's not like they're major safety critical components. However, no matter how tempting a £600 set of Brembo brakes, a £300 carbon hood and trunk, or a £250 set of fake RPF1's are, I could never convince myself to take the risk. I'm sure the Asian market has improved drastically over the past few years, but I'm also sure there are still plenty of very convincing, but very poorly made fakes out there. Taking that risk on anything major is like walking a tightrope over the grand canyon with no safety harness. Fine if it works out well, death if it doesn't. 1 Tim86 reacted to this

zhuonanli 14 Report post Posted March 20, 2017 Lol Taobao, Lets put it this way, This is the biggest Chinese market place, like Ebay for the UK. I spend the whole of my childhood in China, and I can tell you that Even Chinese people wouldn't trust the sellers on that. A lot of stuff are legit, are genuine , however, There are just too many fake stuff, I mean, it is fine to buy some cheap interior bits and even carbon body panels and wings and stuff, However I would never get any performance upgrades such as the brakes from them. Ps. I but soooo many stuff from taobao every single time i go back to China.
Adam9 37 Report post Posted March 20, 2017 A lot of this stuff is made on the same production lines as the real thing on a "ghost shift" : http://archive.fortune.com/magazines/fortune/fortune_archive/2006/05/01/8375455/index.htm Impossible to know what is good and what is a cheap knockoff though without someone buying one. Cerastes 204 Report post Posted March 20, 2017 Thanks for this. I did notice this website few weeks back but for some reason I didn't notice/check the prices. "Japan Tomei GT86 BRZ 86 Unequal length of banana original authentic" This has to be worth it though, might as well get the carbon one ; but then add £££ to delivery and import? 1 jevvy reacted to this

vanko25 70 Report post Posted March 20, 2017 It's very much alike Aliexpress. Most of the stuff are on there too and some of the items are even cheaper. I bought some interior bits and bobs for silly money from Aliexpress to see what are they like.

Tim86 24 Report post Posted March 20, 2017 If you're looking for something specific then you can do an image search. Find an image of what you want to buy, with a white background if possible, the higher the res the better. Then go to taobao.com via Google Chrome and use the translate page feature. Then go to the top left of the tao website and change location from 'global' to 'China mainland'. The page will refresh and there will be a camera icon next to the search bar, click on it and you can then upload your image. I've used it alot for clothing in the past, can be frighteningly accurate. I'm looking to order some cosmetic stuff, so I'll do a review once I'm done. For sure, i'm totally with you on this, common sense etc. And the wheels/turbo are comedy gold. Although in addition to some interior trim I'm also quite interested in the trunk, at that price i might Guinea pig 🤔.

Tim any chance I can join in with you, I'm tempted with the under diffuser and a bonnet or am I better of going alone or would we save a bit on shipping in regard to the third party carriage company. If they both turn out to be a load of tat at least we can giggle at eachother

If they both turn out to be a load of tat at least we can giggle at eachother In my past experience with clothes you'll have problems consolidating several large items as normal carriers won't ship past a certain size. For instance if i ordered a whole body kit it would get split into smaller parcels, so probably won't help. However, for smaller stuff we can do that for sure. I think diffuser and bonnet would be better off shipped by yourself bud as i dont think basetao.com offer a ship by pallete kind of service for large stuff. If anyone wants to do a group buy with me or something I can reship to your address for free. makes it 150-175 USD or £120 to £140 a diffuser which seems like a bit of a bargain to me providing they arent absolute crap
