In the market for a exhaust system - One that isn't too loud!

Recommended Posts

Wow a whole host of replies, thanks to everyone that has commented!

Quite a collection of opinions, judging by the collective I think i'll stay away from Miltek, I thought i'd seen a post a while ago with welds cracking but it being resolved with a flexi pipe? Could be wrong though!

I don't have any plans currently to change manifold e.t.c however that may change in the future, I think for that reason a resonated exhaust would be better, keep the noise down.

Here's a question, if you could change your current exhaust (cat back) to another brand, type with no cost ... would you, and why? A lot of people may have a bias opinion because of their current setup, but given the option of changing, it may be a different story.

Oh and I like the idea of free fitting @Mike@TD.co.uk, I live in London with no drive way, so the days of fitting systems myself are long gone.

Thank you for all your responses so far!

Ryan

It's very difficult to say as you really have to hear the different exhausts live (video's don't often do them justice) but so far I haven't found anything that I like besides the Cobra exhaust I have but if I was to get a new 86 and need a new system, I'd personally go the custom route as what I've seen so far, they're not mega bucks like I thought they'd be, that way I could get them to make it sound exactly how I'd like it.  The Cobra system has a very deep tone and even at high revs, it's not really that raspy which I'm not a fan of, I was going to get the Milltek as they sound nice at low revs (again the nice deep tone) but as soon as you rev it, you can really hear a raspy tinny rattly noise kick in which is what I'm not a fan of.

I'd change mine purely to get rid of the rasp, heard it for the first time under load on video the other day and it's not too bad up top, it's just the mid rev range where it it's like a switch to a different exhaust (based on what it sounds like inside anyway). Would get a Cobra for the same reasons as Keith, but not sure the noise level would be low enough!

Personally Videos of Exhaust Sounds don't really help at all; unless you can guarantee you have some of the best speakers on the market.
They give you an idea, but that's it, to get the real feel and sound you have to see and hear it in person.

I kinda picked up on the fact Milltek would suck, just from how cheap they are alone; obviously that's been reinforced by cracks forming on them.

I've been recommended by I believe Faith that Cobra Exhausts have some of the nicest sound.

Though for me, I'm humming and harring forking out up to 2k in a couple of years and fitting a custom exhaust; quad, or maybe double, or going down the route of central exhausts... either double or maybe triple central pipes...  who knows, its an idea anyway; I'd consider the idea of resonating it, as again I may change the manifold at some point... again its an unknown to me.

I've got a poweflow cat back (the cheapest one around, yet great quality). I also have this attached to a Berk HFC front pipe. The combination is perfect for someone who does a fair few miles ( like myself). No drone at all yet pops and crackles on a B road Bash!
