Insurance for a 20 year old :(

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone

My least favourite time of year is shortly approaching so time to do some research into insurance companies.

The problem for me is I am only 20 but I do have 3 years no claims and also have been driving this car for just over 2 years.

Does anyone have any companies/brokers/websites that it would be worth trying to get as cheap quote as possible?

Also does anyone have any tips to try and get it a bit cheaper for example putting parents on policy etc

Thanks

Jake

I got mine at 23 and used sheilaswheels, 6 years ncb with my dad on the policy was just over £350. One of the big UK underwriters won't insure under 25's on the car at all, including some of the "specialists".

Good luck.

I know that's the problem I am currently dealing with and it kills me to think that with the money from my previous two years insurance I could have got a Turbo

I think they may be 21 and older, now that I think about it. I was with Admiral before, have you tried them?

I know this feel, my BRZ was £850 to insure when I first got it. I was 19 and I only had 1 month of driving experience. Now 20, with 1 year of driving experience and 1 year no claims i've been getting quotes from £1300-£2500! Ridiculous! I'm yet to try Flux, once I do I'll let you know how I got on.

Your best options are the likes of the Admiral/Elephant groups and Sheilas wheels, experiment with adding and removing parents if you still live at home. You will have to bare in mind insurance prices have gone up again this year though.

@TTR are you really complaining about that? When I was 19 I was paying £2k for a fiesta.

I'm complaining about it because it was £850 to insure when I had eff all driving experience and no NCB. But now I have a years driving experience and NCB, the price has gone up considerably when I believed it was safe to assume that it either stay at the same price or get cheaper.

Wow that sucks!!

I paid £2000 in my first year with zero mods and I was 18 with 1yr no claims and each year its get cheaper but very slightly!

I am currently insured through Elephant which have given me the best prices for the previous two years but just incase they don't offer me a great price again I'm trying to find another option as a back up. Will give flux a ring as see what price they can do for me soon :)

Flux couldn't quote me, no idea why. So that's all the club insurers out for me <_<

You tried Greenlight?

Haven't had my license for 3 years, otherwise they would've been my first port of call!

I wish mine was £850.... I paid £1750 and i am 26!!! this is due to my no claims from Barbados not being honored. I am hoping it will drastically drop next year...

So, I really don't understand how insurance premiums are calculated.

Audi RS6 Performance 605hp - Insurance group 50 - £3000 to insure

Supercharged BRZ 280hp - Insurance group 30 - £9700 to insure

Que?

And how would you have insured it? ;)

That's a very valid point I would have to had to just leave it on my drive and sit in it with the occasionally start up and rev to hear that I have a turbo ;)

As this is the most recent insurance topic, just wanted to give a quick vote towards Greenlight. I got a quote from them today in preparation for the TD turbo kit, plus all my other mods (suspension, wheels, exhaust etc.), and it came back at £650.

I'm 25 with 7 years NCB, which I'm sure helps, and the car is kept in a CCTV monitored, locked garage all night.

I would also say, the guy I spoke to onthe phone was extremely helpful. Looking for ways to help me save money by giving accurate mileage, asking about track driving etc. and sounded like a real car guy himself.

Looks like I'll be going with them when my time comes in a few weeks.

I've heard so many good things about Greenlight, once I meet their criteria they're my first port of call!

My insurance with Admiral is more expensive if I say the cars kept in a garage over night.

Heard similar before, same with on drive vs on road parking. If they have a bunch of claims from people reversing into gate posts or the garage (how?!) then they'll bump the premium up for those parking on a drive / in a garage.
