I do wonder if the wheel colour is a bit too dark and that's why it's hard to see the colour unless you've got the sun right on it.

Are you running stock tyres on an 8" rim?

I was doing this on mine. I swapped to Advans mainly for competitive reasons for the TSS. The biggest thing I've noticed is a marked improvement in ride quality. I think the deterioration in ride was caused by the stretch with the stock tyres on my rims. The handling was fab though, very direct response on the steering and easy to just light the rears up and go sideways. I can see why drifters like it.

Interesting to hear how you're finding it.

Check the rolling radius, there is a site somewhere where you can find this out. I would say going up two sizes in width definitely needs a reduction in profile, so 35's are the obvious choice really. Unless you want it to look like a drag car?

It's a difficult one because orange is difficult to contrast with. Crazy wheel colours seem to work best on primary colours with white going with absolutely anything.

Okay, have been through all my pics from 86 style at Fuji last year and this is the best I can find:

To be fair this actually works quite well I think. Sorry fro the lack of focus.

Prefer the wheels without the centre caps, I don't think the red caps go.

As for handling, you could change the bushes. Braces? I wouldn't bother it will handle just fine with the Teins.  I've got the EDFC Active Pro which obviously allows for more adjustment with regard to speed and lateral and longitudinal G force. It works very well. I've also had the Whiteline bushing for the gearbox which is good but not essential.

    Thanks James.

Well at Japfest I may have mentioned to a couple of others that the car had a knocking coming from the front since I had fitted the teins, which I thought may be the front drop links being too long making the sway bar hit the front wish bone. Tonight I jacked the car up and removed the wheels and straight away I could see I was right, so I have whipped them off and will try to source some shorter ones asap. I am glad thats all it was and a quick test drive confirmed this.

While the car was up in the air I dropped the front another 10mm to level it off with the rear as there was a little rake. I took a couple of snaps while on my test drive and those with a good eye will notice the centre caps are off the wheels, this is due to one saying bye bye on my drive home from Japfest. One hadn't gone back on properly and I meant to remove it before I left so I could sort it when I got home but I forgot, doh. So its time to source a replacement which is proving tricky as these wheels are not manufactured anymore but I will sort it.

I am really pleased with the wheel/tyre and suspension combo, the car feels so much more planted and the coilovers are miles better than the BC's I have owned previously on other cars, no crashing at all over rough surfaces.

Next job is to decide on a ducktail spoiler for the rear and to get the handling spot on with further suspension mods including rear control arms, adjustable drop links and a number of bushes/braces to stiffen things up. The positive shift bush is a definite. Any suggestions about what to look at handling wise, I am all ears

Got a test drive booked for Friday at RRG, so I shall find out what all the fuss is about. :-) Test drove a Fiesta ST yesterday which is the only other contender - it's (arguably) best affordable FWD hot hatch vs. best affordable RWD sports car. Will be interesting.

If it's any help I would look for less offset to fill the arches better and consider an 8" rim which can take the stock tyre with a tiny bit of stretch (as I do) or run 225/45/17s. Mine have an offset of 38 which gives me an extra 20mm track and looks better too.

So I have 17x8 with an offset of 38.

If you have a 7" rim you don't really want to go wider than the stock sizes. TRD etc use a 7.5" wide rim with 225/40/18's, but honestly 8" is preferable for this tyre width.

Lauren, If you want Project Mu, then Hendy Performance have recently become the UK distributor. I think the range they have in stock is a bit limited at this time but I'm sure they will expand it as the enquiries come in.

    Hello,

I am new to the forum after picking up my GT86 on Friday. My colleague sent me this link the other day, so I thought I would do my first post here - HI!

I work for PFC 'Performance Friction'. I see from the earlier posts you have settled on new pads, but for future reference the Z-rated pads would be fine for your described usage. They are suitable for fast road/track day use.

Took it out on it's first 'proper spirited drive' yesterday.

We met up with the Piston-heads forum group at Thetford and then convoyed to Stowmarket along some awesome back roads. We then drove a coastal road to Aldeburgh for some fish and chips! Around 70 cars turned up for the day!

All the way it was an absolute blast! On the B-Roads with momentum it just flys! It was catching me out at just how quick it accelerates out of corners! I'm glad I've got good brakes and a good pad compound!

I was behind an Audi RS4, BMW M3, EVO 8 and an RX7. Keeping up was no problem. Corners, straight lines and the likes were just perfect! This charger really makes for an awesome 'spirited driving' car! Staying in the 4 - 7k range on a back road is so much fun. A gear higher usually in corners makes it easier and a bit more usable out of corners. Fully controllable on the throttle, surge of power when you get on the throttle between corners and then plenty of torque out of corners to not need to shift down to 2nd. At one point I had an M3 behind me and wasn't holding him up at all.

Usually would have been a massive problem up front with those sort of cars!

All day I was getting compliments on how well it drove and how awesome it sounds! Few guys behind actually pulled over and complimented how great it sounded. On lift off there's a really nice burble and the odd pop apparently. One guy behind me has got some video which he's sorting out and will send to me.

Lifting off at around 7.5k rpm and you get the awesome recirc sound. Like your traditional Blow Off sound but a little more subtle and longer, and it's not super chavy which is nice, from the outside you can just hear that something is going on and the sound of Darth Vader breathing.

Out of roundabouts and B-Roads the Power to Weight is now identical to an E46 BMW M3. On the B-Roads I didn't really find anything out of league.

If you love reving your car out and using all the power of the rev range then the HKS Centrifugal is definitely worth thinking about! It still gives the sense of having to work the car and wind it up. But you just have a hell of a lot more power all of the time. It just keeps reving and reving! No way to really explain it unless you drive it. But imagine the stock car with just more power everywhere!

One of the best things I've done to the car!

Fuel wise, yesterdays run, driving it very hard 95% of the time. Full throttle blasts between most corners. I averaged 27mpg. Nothing to bad! Average I'm now getting 33mpg. Which is 2 mpg down on what I used to get. Not really a noticeable difference! And since i've had the charger fitted i've not really been economical with it! I should think I can get it up to around 35mpg again with a lighter right foot.

Okay, I'm about to finish off my second set of OEM pads. They have done pretty well totalling over 61K and the second set were kindly donated by Dave (Pitman) so they'd already seen 14K before I put them on!

What can I say, I'm easy on brakes!

But, my issue is that I can overheat the stock pads on the roads. This doesn't happen often but if I get into a rhythm on somewhere like the EVO Triangle or the Lauren Triangle, they do start to smoke.

In terms of track work I mainly sprint, which isn't a big problem for the brakes. For the occasional foray onto track I would say in the 10 minute sessions I tend to do or the longer show sessions of 15 minutes, the brakes will be smoking by the time I come in.

So, what I reckon is that OEM discs are just fine, but perhaps some uprated pads which can take a little more temperature would be ideal. I don't want aftermarket pads that are any louder than the OEM ones. I can take a bit of squealing but not if it's too loud, so would prefer pads that use anti-squeal shims.

There's quite a few options, so I'm interested to hear what people and traders recommend.
