Trolley Jack

Recommended Posts

I'm looking at investing in a low entry trolley jack to fit under the 86, the problem I have though is that I do have use to a pit whenever I need it but it can be a hassle to set everything up just for a small task (i.e swapping wheels). For that reason I don't want to be spending hundreds on a jack to only use it once in a blue moon. Can anyone recommend a decent jack low enough to get under a slightly lowered 86 for sensible money?

I did take a look at the Halfords one but a lot of reviews say it isn't that low - http://www.halfords.com/workshop-tools/garage-workshop/trolley-jacks/halfords-2-tonne-trolley-jack-low-profile

Thanks

Jake

I just use the scissor jack to lift the car enough to get the jack under it.

I'm not a huge fan of scissor jacks due to the stability but good idea I didn't even think of that!

This is the one I have. Good bit of kit. Gets under my 86 easily and lifts it nice and high.

Didn't think of costco either, looks a nice piece of kit that for £100

I've got the standard £25 jack and with a hockey puck it just fits under to jack on the seams so the low profile would work there if you don't mind doing each corner. If you want to jack on the central points I think even the Costco one might struggle on a lowered car at the front.

I have a dirt cheap ebay special that has a different profile to the Halfords one. I'm concerned about that curve up to the pivot point. My one is ok for lifting the rear diff, but the carry handle can get in the way on the undertray trying to reach the front lift point. My car has a normal ride height.

My jack has a profile like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Wheels-N-Bits-2-25-Ton-Low-Profile-Hydraulic-Trolley-Car-Jack-with-LED-Nut-Brace-/142139348941?hash=item21182a57cd:g:VyYAAOSw8gVX9OTD

I think the Halfords one is 1) overpriced, and 2) possibly a bit tall. Unless you only want to jack off the seams, then it'd be fine.

+1 for the costco one I have it and it's good, slightly impractical for me due to my bodykit but its fine i use the scissor jack to raid the front a bit first

That's another really good idea, I'm half tempted by the halfords one due to the price and I still have my 25% discount card from when I used to work there years ago and then just use the scissor jack like you say if I need a bit more clearance

Get a couple of bits of scaffold board or thick plank and roll the front wheels up onto it before jacking, it will give you plenty of extra clearance.

I had the halfords low profile one... started going down on it's own after the first use...

I only use the scissor jack to get the car up enough to put the jack under. I have a quick lift two tonne jack but it doesn't go anywhere near low enough. Using a scissor jack to get lift it 40mm or so is no problem at all really. It's a way round it that costs nothing I guess so there is that! :)

I use this jack as it's the lowest entry jack I could find on sale:-

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00HNV3J02/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_lBsuzb2X39T4K

And then these Thule caravan leveling ramps to lift the front or rear:-

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00FWL4O9A/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_yCsuzbWFM463M

How much room will the ramps create?

Is it enough to use for general service?

I'm not 100% sure on the measurements but I wouldn't think so.

I also use one of these. Quite a few variations of the same jack around, mine is a green Sealey one. It's very good.
