Track Day Insurance Companies

Recommended Posts

Hey All,

Thought I'd start a thread here for people to post up recommended Track Day Insurance Companies for those who want that extra piece of mind when they venture on track.  I for one am wanting to cover myself just in case since my last incident, I know a lot of people will say it's pointless, waste of money etc but I for one wished I had insurance....though I doubt I would have been able to get cover for a car show track session but I digress.

I have used Sky Track Day Insurance before as well as MORIS who were pretty straight forward to use, MORIS even have discounts for multiple trackdays booked in advanced if I remember correctly, but I haven't actually tried them yet to see if they'd cover stuff like the Toyota Sprint Series (though MORIS do do competitive cars on track insurance).

Can people recommend any other track day insurance companies especially those who would cover stuff like the TSS?

I've also been insured by Greenlight Insurance in the past whom would also cover on track by just ringing up and paying £50 for the day but sadly never used it then and when I got my 86, they wouldn't insure me as according to the dude on the phone, they have a vehicle value cap of £20k which is shocking considering they're a performance specialist insurance company.  Will give them another bell now that my insurance is due and my car is worth a lot less now but again, no idea if they'd cover something like the TSS.

Can people also recommend any insurance companies who cover both road use and track days like Greenlight?

For the TSS you need to get motorsport insurance, not trackday insurance.

It's all much the same though. You insure your car for a given value, but will have a 10% excess. Cost will be similar to trackday insurance. As for who to contact, I've only done this once when I was testing a Formula Renault, it was about £140, but I doubt that is particularly relevant, IIRC insured for £10K.

I've actually managed to get a quote this time through Greenlight Insurance, they're a lil more expensive than Sky (my renewal if about £530 where as Greenlight want £595 roughly) but if you want to go on track, you ring up, pay £45 for the day and excess is only double your normal excess.  So after a single track day, I would have almost paid less overall (i.e. stick with Sky for £530, pay say £150 for a days track day insurance which means paying about £680 where as if I go with Greenlight, pay £595 plus the £45 for the days track day insurance, that's only about £640) and instead of say 10% excess (which would be about £1500), you'd pay £600 instead.....so very tempting.  Just a shame they don't cover sprints.  They said over the phone that they cover all UK tracks except for Castle Combs.

Also got a quote from Competition Car Cover who can supply insurance for normal road use and trackdays but I'm not sure I applied correctly, their website is a lil.....pants, they offer a load of different insurance products and you have to download a form for one of them and e-mail it through.  Well I got a quote back nonetheless and they want £1,165 for only up to 8,000 miles (where as I need at least 15,000) and up to 5 track days (2 can be in europe though) and it's £75 for additional days.......maybe no then.

Interesting how they won't cover Castle Combe. But then again it does have the most accidents than any other UK track for novice drivers...

You will be very hard pressed to find anyone that will cover sprints as it's a timed event. As soon as timing gets added into the mix, no one wants to know as it becomes a competitive sport which means you push harder and are more likely to crash...apparently

Dan, it may be worth looking into policies that will allow the addition of track cover for a reduced cost, or is that something you do already?

I have been insured through yourselves for 2 years now as no one else got close and the above would be awesome.

Hi,

Thanks for the comment. Unfortunately as we are a broker it means that the insurer that offers track cover may not be the same insurer your normal policy is with so we can't add this on to an existing policy, our track day policies are a separate policy that runs along side the normal one.

Kind regards,
Dan

I too had the additional cover with Greenlight but never used it at the time during that policy as my mx5 was a temperamental little shite....

I did one track day while insured with flux, I called them up and got quoted £140 for a day at Llandow. In the end I got covered a track day cover company called Morris, for near enough half the price. I am currently with flux, but if Greenlight will do me a good deal I'd be looking to go back as I'd like to get the GT on track sometime next year.
