New GT86 owner... Picked it up today!

Recommended Posts

So I ordered my first ever new car on Friday, a GT86 in red. I got a pretty special deal it seems, and a very short wait since I've actually bought a pre-built but not registered car so in theory it arrives a week tomorrow. I literally couldn't be happier because I've wanted one since the original FT86 concept was announced, but was never in a position to actually buy until now - I decided to launch a business instead!

My friends are getting a bit sick of me rambling on about GT86s now so thought I'd sign up to the forum and join in the conversation where it might be more appreciated ;)

Got my registration number this morning, and signed all paperwork too so all I have to do is wait...

Congrats James and welcome to the club. That's a good waiting time but you'll still be crawling up the walls...I knew mine was at my dealership but I actually asked if they could keep hold of it for an extra couple of weeks as my current insurance company wouldn't cover me due to the price of the car which was rediculous for a specialist. But I caved and brought a couple of weeks temporary insurance in the end so best of luck with you wait :D

Any plans for the car at all? Mods, trackdays, shows etc?

I've ordered some Valenti rear lights already, although I quite like the look of the TOMs ones so may change my mind. Just hate the OEM ones, even though I know the heritage of them...

I'll be leaving it pretty stock for a few months but my background is selling aftermarket car parts for the past decade or so so it's unlikely to stay too standard I reckon! I'd like to get back on track, it's been too long since my last track day for sure!

So after a pretty short wait compared to some, I picked up my first new car - my red GT86.

Anyhow it's all very familiar to everyone here I'm sure, but I believe this is the "2016" model and I picked it up with less than 10 miles on the clock and instantly hit traffic... which wasn't ideal.

Took it back to my business to show my business partner and interested customers. My business partners AE86 happened to be parked up so got some shots together.

Took it for a gentle drive tonight, but due to some commitments I only got around 90 miles into my 1000 mile run-in!

Anyhow, I have some Valenti rear lights waiting to be fitted hopefully tomorrow if I find time and then I need to find some suitable wheels since I'm not a fan of the OEM ones at all.

My background is in motorsport/aftermarket part sales and although my business now is distributing RC Drift Cars, I haven't forgotten my roots so want to get some high quality, cool wheels and maybe coilovers as soon as my budget allows.

I've seen this 1,000 miles mentioned a lot. I assume this is the running in period of the car. Do you need to go back for a 1,000 mile service and check?

Yes - it's the running in period. Theres some debate about it on here, but if you're following the handbook - stick to 4000rpm for that period. I did. Mostly. (It is a serious test of willpower)

There's no formal check at this point, but my dealership offered a courtesy check up, just to make sure it's not using more oil than it should be etc... I checked that myself, and it isn't... :-)

Thanks, that won't be a problem for me. The only problem is that if the power is unleashed at the higher rpm, you have no way of checking all is good for a while. If I get this car it is probably likely to take me about 3 months to complete the first 1,000 miles!
