Polishingpedlar 49 Report post Posted February 21, 2015 Does anyone know a shop where I get can a helmet local to Basingstoke that will conform with the regs required for TSS? Bike helmets don't have the fire retardant as I've tried that route already. Don't really want to travel all the way to demon tweaks either if I can avoid it. Help required please.. Ta. rob275 1817 Report post Posted February 21, 2015 John, I don't know of any other Motorsport supermarket like Demon tweaks. Though you could get one online? I know it's always best to size one up but if you can't journey over.
Polishingpedlar 49 Report post Posted February 21, 2015 Rob I've found a place based at Silverstone (Grandprix Racewear) thats only just over an hour from home so will give them a try. As its a helmet I really need to try it on, comes from buying bike helmets in the past and getting it wrong even when I know my size! Each Manufacturers seem to be slightly different. Will post how I get on in case others are interested. John

Plus there's plenty of motorsport porno around, race cars, gokarts, piccies on the wall of famous patrons, a nice place to buy your gear.

I think I might be spending a bit more than planned then! Thanks for the heads up Stan. 1 Stan Hawrylak reacted to this

Polishingpedlar 49 Report post Posted February 22, 2015 I got a couple of lids if you wanna try sizes, not far from you. Thanks for the offer Kevin, I'm normally an fan of Arai from my bike days but as I now need a car specific helmet I'm going to change brand. This causes problems because my size in an Arai is different in a bell, shoei or others. Gunna have a trip out Tuesday to Silverstone to make a purchase. 1 Polishingpedlar reacted to this
KevinA 695 Report post Posted February 22, 2015 Good call, I use a Bell open face car helmet and my full face comp helmet is a Simpson both fit differently. 1 Polishingpedlar reacted to this
Lauren 2259 Report post Posted February 22, 2015 I'd also recommend an open face helmet for sprinting. Okay a full face has more protection and when I was racing against others cars on track that's what I used. But I would say that an open face is tons more comfortable, it's cooler, you can have a drink or a vape or a smoke whilst you're in the queue.
Lauren 2259 Report post Posted February 22, 2015 I got this one a little over a year ago: http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/motorsport/helmets/bell-mag-1-helmet It's perhaps not the lightest, but it's very comfortable and is FR of course. It even has the post for Hans if you felt so inclined.

Lauren 2259 Report post Posted February 22, 2015 As you know, comfort is key, I've found this helmet great in that regard. 1 Polishingpedlar reacted to this
Polishingpedlar 49 Report post Posted February 24, 2015 So, I went to Grandprix race wear today and bought a bell open face helmet as recommended by Lauren. Really glad I went as size was smaller than my normal lid. Great guys to deal with and I was like a kid in a sweet shop, found it hard to resist. Lauren 2259 Report post Posted February 27, 2015 Demon Tweeks have it up at £175. I paid £214 for mine there a bit over a year ago. YMMV I guess. http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/motorsport/helmets/bell-mag-1-helmet

Happy enough though and glad I tried it on first.
Lauren 2259 Report post Posted February 28, 2015 I expect the £175 is excluding VAT come to think about it! So £214 then! 1 Polishingpedlar reacted to this
Deacon 1357 Report post Posted February 28, 2015 There is no VAT on helmets is there? Mine was definitely VAT free when I bought it from DT last month.

LFA 68 Report post Posted February 28, 2015 Unless you plan to go open cockpit at some point or rules require, I'd go open face . If you are running road car safety, bags, belts etc then it's probably all a moot point anyway. 1 Lauren reacted to this
Lauren 2259 Report post Posted February 28, 2015 Yep, agree having used full face helmets for 14 years, going open face is just so much more comfortable. The benefits of being able to have a drink and vape whilst in the pitlane make life a fair bit easier. Also being able to talk and people being able to hear you is a bonus too. Much, much cooler too when it's hot.
