Tuning a NA

Recommended Posts

Popped to Fensport on Monday

and did an Ecutek

a little disappointed with poor Tesco fuel quality!

Observations so far,

8 mpg improvement on low performance map!

Based on 100 odd miles on way back home,

when touring with car full of luggage

This was on a steady cruise on A15 in a rural area,

needed to change down to 5th on hills, but not many in Lincolnshire

2nd map

3.5 mpg improvement when having a steady traffic laden drive to Oulton Park,

on track today, so I am sure that will change

The car had a baseline 36.1mpg

It's nice to hear that you are getting reasonable mpg. I will get a remap at some point, but I don't think I will be flicking through maps, so I'm intersted in how your mpg is affected when in the performance map. What about how it goes like though? ;)

Did you map it on Tesco Momentum? Adrian reckons that Shell is the way to go for maximum advance. I use little else, I admit.

Nice day for a track day. :)

The stock map does run very rich, I'm guessing for safety due to the high compression. Even the performance maps should be more efficient than the stock map. Especially when you can reduce/remove the fuel trims as obviously this has a big effect on how the car runs.

This is the OEM map:

Stock%20Fuel%20Map.jpg

I've highlighted the area that you naturally hit when going full throttle. Low 11/High 10 is rich by any standard, my car doesn't even go into 10s now. Decent tuning should always benefit in both instances once you start tying the systems in together. I managed a good average of 39mpg on my run up to Cosworth last week.

And yes, Shell VP is the way to go. Seems to have better knock resistance and helps keep the engine cleaner by all accounts.

Well I am going to use Shell in the future!

Even map 2 gives nigh on 40 mpg on 70 odd country cruise

Does anyone know what components are changed at the various services?

Toyokid. Salute. Hks legamax is the bomb. Mine sounds better the more I drive it.

Will get a de cat manifold and a supercharger installed in July as waiting on a kit.

Will keep you posted on changes of sound. But on a n.a set up I think its up there on sound quality!

At the Yorkshire Modified Car meet at Pickering on Sunday

Jamie was parked next to me with his custom made single exit exhaust

and we did the obligatory noise comparison

with a focus group of about 10

everyone said our cars sounded very different

but not better or worse and apparently the noise level was not so different!

I find that hard to believe when I have 3 silencers v Jamie's 1

Stephen

Torque is definitely up since the remap

Was a bit sleepy at 6.00am on the road for the YMC meet

and when near my destination I thought, how few gear changes I had made up steep hills

Car a lot less noisy on startup since altering the ignition retard

I have seen a Samco induction tube (standard air box) fitted to some cars, which has enables the noise generator to be deleted,

which looks much neater

and less complicated.

Any thoughts on noticeable noise levels?

I don't suppose there is a performance benefit?

Haven't noticed any difference in induction noise with mine fitted other than the loss of the drone, but it did get done at the same time as the exhaust...

I just wanted rid of the sound generator as just didn't think it sounded right

Popped down to Lechlade

Circa 200 odd miles each way

Hot so using aircon

Running on economy map 1

Mainly constant throttle

No great acceleration

Seems to change the character of the car, more relaxing to drive

And averaging 40 mpg!

Just driven 700 odd miles on my jollies, so switched to economy map

Mainly constant throttle using c. Control and pottering

Achieving 40 mpg using A/C most of the time

The car felt much more docile which was pleasant for touring.

Decided to switch to map 3 when back home

Throttle was much crisper, much more linear to input

Much more performance and fun to drive

Economy in everyday use 35 mpg

So very good

But.....that extra performance is based on leaner fuelling and more advance

So have been aware on more pinking at roundabouts etc when not giving her beans!

Kinda reminds me of one of my old Celicas before getting rid

340bhp

Recaros

40mm Bilsteins all corner weighted

When everything was working in harmony, she was brilliant and a real adrenalin rush

The 86 gives me the same adrenalin rush, pretty much out of the box

With everyday reliability and unbelievable economy

When I do eventually get my 350-400bhp Carlos Sainz Celica back on the road, the worry will be an anti-climax!

Hey ho

Steve,

Sounds like map 3 needs 'tweaking'... there is no reason for pinking on a trailing throttle...

... unless you've been going for crap fuel, of course....

Don't wanna sell your  CS Celica, do you..?
