Tareim 343 Report post Posted January 8, 2016 4 hours ago, Lauren said: Realistically, Sam, it's not worth having rear speakers. They don't contribute and a decent set of two ways for the fronts and a sub will make it easier to set the sound up properly. I reckon you're better off sinking your money into decent front speakers with the money you save from not buying replacement rears. Best thing to do with the rears is disconnect them. I was looking to get a more surround sound effect hence wanting to get some better speakers in the rear as the current ones are patheticly quiet
Lauren 2259 Report post Posted January 8, 2016 But it doesn't really offer much in the way of benefit, Sam. You don't want the sound behind you really. Next time come see what mine sounds like with just two ways in the front and a sub in the boot (and an amp and DSP of course!).
rob275 1817 Report post Posted January 8, 2016 As stereo is 2 channel there is 0 reason to have rears realistically. Though it can make the car sound more "full"

I did hear it a little bit at Ambers meet but I think I'd need to have a seat inside it with the doors closed to hear it in normal use to see how it sounds 20 minutes ago, rob275 said: As stereo is 2 channel there is 0 reason to have rears realistically. Though it can make the car sound more "full" that's sort of effect I'd be looking to achieve, also I have 5.1 system on my computer and it does a good job of altering stereo to full surround, mind you I do use flac so some might actually be 5.1? Keethos 842 Report post Posted January 9, 2016 Can you even get 5.1 music? I was under the impression that only games and movies have 5.1/7.

Though all music is generally stereo. http://www.ministryofsound.com/events/calendar/club/2015/12/03/11/13/160123-hospital-records#pbd1qDfS8soQm0KO.97 The above event is the first time dolby atmos will be used in a club. 1 Gringosteve reacted to this
Gringosteve 213 Report post Posted January 9, 2016 Orbital did a DVD album in 5.1, in reality the only thing that could play it 5.1 at the time was a DVD player http://www.discogs.com/Orbital-The-Altogether-51/release/182434 I have a copy in my dusty collection

Though it can make the car sound more "full" Better to have an amazing pair of front speakers than mediocre front and rear speakers, especially in a cabin as small as the 86 1 Lauren reacted to this
Lauren 2259 Report post Posted January 9, 2016 Surround sound is great for watching films. But put it this way, when you go to see live music, you expect the music to come towards you and if you were listening to music at home, you wouldn't expect or want music from behind you, it's just not how you do it. So a car is no different IMO. If you've got a car with a sizable cabin then you expect speakers in the rear, but I think the only reason Toyota put speakers in the rear was so it could say the car had a six speaker system. Given the tiny cabin, it's not worth it.
Gringosteve 213 Report post Posted January 9, 2016 Yup 5.1 in a car is pointless and actually sounds crap for music as it tries to push the vocal stage to the centre speaker leaving the L and R channels sounding echoey
Church 209 Report post Posted January 9, 2016 + It's better returns per investments to get two higher quality speakers then big pile of crappy ones at same budget. At least that is the reason i got good stereo setup @home, instead of going for mediocre surround one. I'm guessing it can be applied to cars aswell.
Lauren 2259 Report post Posted January 9, 2016 Exactly, my home setup is the same as for my car, an amp and two main speakers facing me and a very good sub.

Though after a while you'd get used to, and prefer just having the fronts on and if done right you can have a fantastic sound stage. 1 Gringosteve reacted to this
Test Drives Unlimited 278 Report post Posted January 10, 2016 OK guys and gals you have convinced me enough not to buy the JBL Sound System, but instead contact my local Car Sound Specialist I would still like to replace the Rear Speakers in the Side Panels though !! Am I right in thinking that the Speakers on top of the Dashboard are dummies ?

Am I right in thinking that the Speakers on top of the Dashboard are dummies ? There are tweeters in the dashboard and a space for a 4" mid-bass. Though it doesn't come with the GT86, at least not in the UK. (unless you go for the JBL kit.
Test Drives Unlimited 278 Report post Posted January 10, 2016 So a Sound Specialist could use that space to put some active Speakers in ?

Lauren 2259 Report post Posted January 10, 2016 Atop the dash is not a good place for speakers though. Better off to use to the door speakers. I have tweeters mounted in front of the interior door release on the door panels as it's better for sound to have them there.
Church 209 Report post Posted January 10, 2016 I'm also thinking, that door speaker upgrade, if only two are changed, would bring better results. Both placement, and native mounting sizes wise.
Test Drives Unlimited 278 Report post Posted January 10, 2016 I miss the Surround Sound System I had in my MPS but agree with all the above comments that it's not much use in a 2+2 Sports Car Will go and see Road Radio on Monday or Tuesday http://www.roadradio.com/ Am also going to get the DAB Integrated Kit from Toyota fitted to my GT86 in the next few weeks

rob275 1817 Report post Posted January 11, 2016 Depending on how anal you are about your audio, i'd consider adding a DSP aswell. Audison bit ten is generally the one to go for. It's around £
Keethos 842 Report post Posted January 11, 2016 I do sometimes wish that I didn't just go the JBL route, it's convinent especially for someone who hasn't a clue about in car audio but I'm sure I would have enjoyed fitting all the bits etc, but I would need someone to tell me what I'd need....ah well....there's always next time
Lauren 2259 Report post Posted January 11, 2016 An Audison Bit 10 Digital Sound Processor is worth the leap providing they know how to set it up. Are you going for a sub woofer, Nigel?
