gavin_t 184 Report post Posted November 7, 2018 Bit of an odd one this. @willfmair and I got talking and he posted some videos of online reviews of the GT86 for a few years back. Now the car in the video has my registration but is red. Where as mine is Orange?? Any idea what Toyota do with their press cars? I went to the launch of the Honda FK2 civic type R a few years back and was told by the guys there that the initial press cars are scrapped after they have served their purpose. Is this the same with Toyota and they have just applied the same reg to another car afterwards? Car came to me via a Toyota dealership and I even did my own HPI etc and it all came back as complete and it been orange.... nerdstrike 186 Report post Posted November 7, 2018 I know the press cars get caned, especially sports models, so it is conceivable that they might do a tear down on a couple of them to see what wear has occurred. Otherwise I see no reason why they wouldn't salvage some of the value by selling it at a hefty discount. In this instance either they transferred the plates, or there is indeed some funny colour balance going on. I can believe that the "hot hatches" video above has the wrong white balance, but the Rory video looks like actual red. How mysterious!
willfmair 24 Report post Posted November 7, 2018 Wow you know what I didn't actually notice both those cars had the same registration - I was just about to comment that the one in the hot hatches video actually seems to be orange but the video settings are a bit off but on a second glance the Rory Reid video does in fact have the same number plate - what a coincidence as I originally just posted the Rory Reid video to show how close it was to my original plate on my red car, then later added in the other video as it was yours!!! How very strange - have you managed to uncover any more about this yet? I imagine Rory is not an easy man to get hold of anymore. James Batchelor (one of the guys in the hot hatch video) might be easier? https://twitter.com/JRRBatchelor?ref_src=twsrc^google|twcamp^serp|twgr^author
willfmair 24 Report post Posted November 7, 2018 Although, on closer inspection of the story Reid video, it does look orange at moments, despite looking so blatantly red the rest of the time - possible that the film was messed with so that it looked red? Look at the boot at around 2:
OllyW 9 Report post Posted November 7, 2018 Also look at the mirror on the interior shots, can see it orange Weird why they would edit it?
Dave86 33 Report post Posted November 7, 2018 My VXR8 was the UK photography car for the sales brochures when they first came out and she was first registered as "DE51RED". Alot of Vauxhaull's have used the same plate when new models launched. When it was done with that job it got a new plate and Vauxhall retained Desired for their purposes....might be the same for yours.
gavin_t 184 Report post Posted November 7, 2018 Yer might just be how it has compressed when uploaded etc. Everything else matches like interior trim level etc. @Dave86 I did always wonder why the very range had simular plates in photography always vxr or vx something

Subota Boy 402 Report post Posted November 10, 2018 On our first GT86 test drive in July 2012, not realising that this had been in the hands of Autocar before ending up at my local dealer. Wonder what happened to it. 1 Angelina reacted to this
BristolLee 25 Report post Posted November 21, 2018 Press models are often sold on through either the dealer network or via specialist car auctions. Most of the GT86 press cars have gone through the latter, but can still be bought by dealer franchises too.
