Nemo 24 Report post Posted April 9, 2016 (edited) Hi all Finally managed to pull some pictures together, so thought I would start a thread on my 86. I've had it since October 2014 (year and a half-ish now), and hands down an awesome car. Told myself I wouldn't modify it for the first year, but that didn't really happen. Firstly I bought the TRD sound tube pack from ebay, shipped in from Japan (UK was out of stock at the time); swapped in the loud sound tube as I thought it would make the sound better and that I wouldn't therefore want more noise from exhaust straight away. Was okay, but was still lacking. The plan is that since this is my daily driver I have to modify within reason, thought I do still want to take this on a track at some point. Firstly, the sound tube lacking, I changed out the exhaust; lots of research later, (and telling myself I wouldn't change the manifold at any point soon) I bought the Invidia N1 and fitted this in my driveway. Awesome sound - loud, deep, though yes it did drone somewhat. Awesome quality for the price. What I found was that swapping the old exhaust out did upset the aerodynamics of the car - leaves a gaping great air pocket at the back of the car, and easily noticeable on the motorway. A kind of 'floaty' feeling. Looking around the ft86 forums etc, cam across the Apexi exhaust tray - basically bolts underneath the car and covers the void in between the exhaust cans. Looks pretty mean and is lightweight aluminium. Makes the car a lot more planted at higher speeds. Got a bit bored with the gear changes - used to drive a Type R, and it was a very nice gear change. Swapped out the gear shifter and shifter knob for the Kartboys short shifter and Mtec springs (from FT86SpeedFactory) as well as a WC Latheworks aluminium knob which weighs a lot more. Overall combination is great - full movement is only about 2 inches forward/back and the weight of the knob makes it effortless. Nemo 24 Report post Posted April 9, 2016 I like big spoilers, rather Fast and Furious I know, but makes the car just stand out more! Took me about 2 months to decide on which one - opted for the (rather expensive) S-Craft spoiler, technically designed for the BRZ and looks a lot like the first gen Impreza wings. Imported from JapanParts, eagerly awaited the delivery, but got it home, turned out it had been damaged in production. Emailing with Japanparts got me knowhere sadly about compensation, and couldn't get hold of the original S-Craft people either (website sucks). Looks like when they tried the riveting, massively upset the gel coating (and a little bit of the carbon fibre as well. Real pain in the whatsits as I had to wait for 4 weeks whilst japanaparts got nowhere. In the end, decided to say screw it, and repair it myself using some industrial grade epoxy resin. Pick off the broken bits of gel coat, and then layer up some epoxy to make a coating, hold everything together and then re-rivet the hole. Turned up pretty good, I was surprised myself. Can't find the final pictures, but you can barely tell it was damaged now. 1 Keethos reacted to this
Nemo 24 Report post Posted April 9, 2016 Painted and fitted. Carbon blade across the middle. Completely covers the OEM holes. 1 Keethos reacted to this
Nemo 24 Report post Posted April 9, 2016 I've now switched out the OEM manifold for a JDL UEL catless manifold, 2.5 overpipe (both ceramic coated for the heat shielding) and an ultra quiet front pipe (silencer and hi-flow cat). Combined with the Invidia N1 this thing is loud now. Such a rumble at low speeds to it now, roars when opened up; absolutely love it. Some car alarms don't though (like the bosses at work!). As Mark at Abbey has said - will be interesting come MOT time this year as to whether the cat passes as they have had issues previously with Cobra and others, though don't think we've seen a JDL one tested yet. Only got a few shoddy videos at the moment. Excuse the stupid voice in the videos. https://youtu.be/leVvIUHxM4M https://youtu.be/WZCE5DtA6Iw Took the car down to Mark at Abbey to have it remapped, made 220 and the dip was greatly compressed to c.500rpm gap. Full throttle shifting is (well was) so much fun! Cold start was dialled out in the remap, but I had to have the remap removed to take back to Toyota for warranty work - bad idle, slip light and CEL coming on - having camshaft timing issues apparently. Toyota fixed this with an ECU update, which seems to have resolved it, but this is very odd because the ECUTEK rom should be the latest update file. I need to head back for Mark to have a look at it/and re-flash the remap. Well hopefully I will not cause any issues, but who knows. For mostly show at the moment, bought and fitted some Takata (yes I am aware of all the safety issues around harnesses), as I say, mostly for show at the moment. Next stages - just purchased the Aerokit Spec R1 kit, which is basically just the Vertex kit, but not. Have to find someone to fit it and paint it - does anyone know of a specialist down in Surrey that can help on this? 1 Keethos reacted to this

Nemo 24 Report post Posted April 9, 2016 Wow, you have been busy! Got to be wheels and suspension next? Yeah I may have got overexcited looking at everything on the Internet. Sooo many cool things to buy though! Yeah was looking at the Tein Street Flex for coilovers. Wheels - I want ones like the Rays Gramights 57C6, but they're so damn expensive thats off the cards: https://www.rayswheels.co.jp/products/wheel.php?lang=en&wheel=57C6. Really like the concave effect. Sent from my E6853 using Tapatalk 1 ALB453 reacted to this
Lauren 2259 Report post Posted April 9, 2016 Yes, beautiful wheels, but expensive, though you'd be one of very few with them. Two options with regard to coilovers. Flex Z (non rebuildable) or Flex A's with the hydro bumpstops. You can have 6/6kg which most go for or 5/6kg which is what I have which tends to make it a bit more lively, but I like it. Then there's the option of EDFC Active Pro too.

Nemo 24 Report post Posted June 27, 2016 Finally managed to get my kit painted and fitted - got it back today, and I'm loving it! Was thinking of carbon wrapping, but I'm glad I went for all orange instead. Paint matching is pretty good I must say! Obviously need to change the alloys now...but that can be the next step. Nemo 24 Report post Posted September 11, 2016 After much deliberation, I finally got round to choosing new wheels, and after 4 weeks, a set of Work Emotion Cr Kiwami 18x8.5 in 47 (front) and 38 (rear) offsets arrived! All 4 are now fitted with Yoko V105s in 245/35/R18 (I dont like the stretched look at all!) and weigh in at c.10kg. Yes, not massively lightweight but considering I've gone up 1 inch diameter and 1.5 extra width, its acceptable to me. Wheels are pretty much flush, look great. The grey tyre look is only slight upsetting me at the moment.....! 3 Deacon, Ztox and Keethos reacted to this
Lauren 2259 Report post Posted September 11, 2016 Cool. It's crying out to be lowered now. I would say that 235s won't have any stretch and 225 would only be a very small amount. I'd go for 225's on a rim that width, it's perfect for it.

I'd read all the posts about tyre size and it was such a toss up; in the end I thought I'd try the more-grip (over grip some may say!) approach and see what it was like. 225 could be cheaper in long run. I do really want to lower it, but I already have difficulty with the front lip scraping in multi-stories/other slopes so lower by an inch may leave me beached :-D Be a good excuse to buy another DD though Sent from my E6853 using Tapatalk
Deacon 1357 Report post Posted September 11, 2016 I think it looks pretty perfect on the tyres you have fitted. In fact on the third picture from the bottom it looks like they're a little stretched anyway. 1 Nemo reacted to this

Nemo 24 Report post Posted September 14, 2016 Had my first MOT with the JDL HFC - asked the guy (Motorline Gatwick) to make sure it was warm, and seems to have passed with good margin. Good pass for such a tiny HFC. On sale too, though exchange rates are a bit poo at the moment. https://jdlautodesign.net/shop/ft86-ultra-quiet-front-pipe/#prettyPhoto[product-gallery]/1/ Sent from my E6853 using Tapatalk
Nemo 24 Report post Posted September 4, 2017 It's been a while since an update. Earlier in the year I took the car up to Mike at Tuning Developments for their Stage 1 Turbo Kit. Car now feels much more like it should - the TRQ and HP is fed in smoothly and consistently across the rev range from around 3k rpm, and just keeps building until redline. Plenty of gains above my full NA exhaust system! Obviously not subtle when you open the bonnet, but you can barely see the intercooler until you're up close. The screamer pipe perhaps not to all tastes, but personally I think sounds amazing. Since then I have managed to not spend much money on the car (crazy busy at work over the summer). I have noticed in the last month or so that the clutch appears to be slipping slightly in 6th, quite possibly a mix of more power, the miles I drive (and probably poor clutch use...!). My car is due for 50k service and MOT by end of September, therefore I am booked over the week of 23-28 September for this and a clutch change. Since Mike has the car it would be rude to not get the Stage 2 upgrade (which includes the clutch!) I might see some of you up there on the 23/30 September. When I was last up there, a thought that Mike/I had was that a larger diameter pipe could open up a few more HP than the <2.5 inch Invidia N1 catback (more me than Mike I expect). Going for Stage 2 I thought a wider bore exhaust therefore needed as a birthday present to myself, so this beauty arrived in the post from the US in the last week...Greddy Revolution RS single exit. The fabrication on this is just stunning - the welds are something else, I was really impressed. Some pictures on the car. And also including the blanking plate. Spoiler looks massive as a result of the angle. Honest. A comparison of the muffler against the Invidia N1. Quieter at idle. Bit louder when driving (its 3"), but it sounds...cleaner...being a single exit; I put it down to there not being a second exit. Not got any videos yet, but may have time to arrange over the weekend. Nemo 24 Report post Posted September 5, 2017 does it drone at all on the motorway? Had it on for a couple of days, it does drone a bit at around 2k rpm. Nothing that bothers me. Motorway speeds it drones a bit less as its higher up the Rev band. Hopefully will drone less when sooted up, and remapped by Mike. Nemo 24 Report post Posted September 5, 2017 where do the harness mount behind the seat? Currently rear set belt points. Not comfortable with the angle they sit at as below recommended angle, so looking at options to change the angle they sit at (harness bar etc).
