Deacon 1357 Report post Posted November 8, 2015 Anyone know what's recommended for the HKS drop in filter - cleaning or replacement? If it's cleaning what the best way to do it? Cheers!
Mark-in-Stoke 488 Report post Posted November 8, 2015 Hi matey, I would think warm soapy water and blow off with an airline. Can't find the instructions for my old one , so a little unsure.
Camilz 15 Report post Posted November 8, 2015 Apparently replace after 6-12 months or 6,000 to 10,000 km according to their website. what do people do with theirs? I'm wondering the same thinghttp://www.hks-power.co.jp/en/support/faq/intake.html
GT86Jay 202 Report post Posted November 8, 2015 I've been told not to wash the HKS filter! For the price i'd just replace it with a new one.
Gringosteve 213 Report post Posted November 9, 2015 I saw a picture of a disintegrated HKS filter, green foam all over the MAF. I'd replace.
Deacon 1357 Report post Posted November 9, 2015 Yep I'm going with replace I think. Cheers all!
Mike 458 Report post Posted November 9, 2015 Replace every 6-10km?! Oops...How dirty is yours? Mine isn't that bad really even after probably ~20k miles...

Mines perfectly fine just a bit dirty, can take a pic when I get home seeing as it's not currently in the car
rob275 1817 Report post Posted November 9, 2015 Haven't looked at mine, but I guess it's due a replacement going by the above figures. Will get it checked at Abbey whilst it's in for a service I s'pose.
Deacon 1357 Report post Posted November 9, 2015 Didn't get chance to look at mine when I got home as it was dark. I've ordered a Cosworth one to try for a change from the HKS.

Gringosteve 213 Report post Posted November 9, 2015 K&N fits well and engine pulls much better
Deacon 1357 Report post Posted November 9, 2015 I'm not a fan of oiled filters which ruled the k&n out for me. 1 Gringosteve reacted to this
Gringosteve 213 Report post Posted November 9, 2015 Fair enough, if I was turbo I would avoid too due to MAF coating. Think ur ok N/A
Deacon 1357 Report post Posted November 9, 2015 I'm pretty sure it's completely groundless but that oil on the maf thing has always put me off!

Mike 458 Report post Posted November 10, 2015 That doesn't seem too bad for 20k - how was the foam holding up on the other side?I didn't particularly touch it when I first got it, but it still feels soft and spongy whereas the dirty side feels harderK&N fits well and engine pulls much betterI'd be surprised if you can tell a difference, switching back to the stock one at the weekend I couldn't tell a difference and there was no performance difference at all, although that could have been me pushing harder... Church 209 Report post Posted November 10, 2015 From what i know, when gains are most (on completely stock car), aftermarket drop-in filter can net up to +5whp. It's just 2.5%, hardly can be felt by "butt dyno". But then again, it's also as cheap, to compensate very slight gains for upgrade.
Gringosteve 213 Report post Posted November 10, 2015 Power wise a I agree little or no improvement. Driveability is a different story. The engine feels more responsive and urgent to throttle inputs. This makes it feel faster to me
Church 209 Report post Posted November 10, 2015 Don't write off placebo effect, as you may "notice" changes also simply due expecting them from upgrade :). 1 Gringosteve reacted to this
Gringosteve 213 Report post Posted November 11, 2015 I agree but I'm a sceptical b@stard
Keethos 842 Report post Posted November 11, 2015 They need changing??? I thought that you just give them a quick blast with an airline would suffice.....best get mine out and check as it's been in there for a good 40odd thousand miles me thinks 3 Mike, Camilz and Mark-in-Stoke reacted to this
Church 209 Report post Posted November 12, 2015 Oiled filters supposedly should last almost lifetime, just wash & reoil .. but i'm a bit sceptical on that. Normal paper airfilters needs changing of course. One can partially clean them up with eg. that airline blast, but they will never work as good as they were new. I guess, that they still will filter even with all built up inside pores dust .. but they will be less effective/passing less air with more resistance to flow. If you are ok with car slightly underperforming, then such airblasted probably are ok for longer time. I'd prefer to change them at car manufacturer recommended intervals. It's not that big of a spending to try save on it.
