Steering wheel/seat adjustment question

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I've been browsing here for a while (long before I picked up my 86 last week), but something has been bugging me since buying the car which I had to create an account to ask.

I've noticed that, behind my steering wheel (between it and the instrument cluster) there is a little device, obviously not OEM (if it is, they did a shoddy job of fitting it) stuck down on the binnacle. It looks to me like some sort of mobile phone bluetooth device (though I thought all that was built in to the stereo).

Anyway, my problem isn't that it's there, but, I can't help but feel it's limiting the movement of the wheel. I feel like I'm over the top of the wheel all the time, even with the seat at it's lowest and the wheel at it's highest (the top of the wheel is around chin level for me when comfortable).

I'm not tall (just under 6ft) and I've seen videos of people driving the GT86 and they do nothing but praise the low driving position. Either my idea of a low driving position is poor, or there's something going on.

Would anyone have any idea what this device is, or any further advice?

I am willing to get some pictures of it (probably tomorrow though, as it's late) or do whatever else, just need to find an answer.

I don't know if there's a way I could compare the levels of adjustment with others, to see if my seat and/or wheel are limited in movement, but any ideas in that respect would be great.

Cheers all.

Hi buddy,

So If I get this right, you feel like you are towering over the wheel too much? I would suggest pulling the wheel down a bit, and then pushing it back to its furthest setting away from you.. Then if you set the seat so that you are comfortable and low enough so that your knees clear the bottom of the wheel, it might be a bit better? I like to have the wheel up close to me quite low, with the seat on the ground.

In regards to the funny object, does it look like this? (Excuse the instagram photo)

If so, all cars have them and I think it must be something to do with the alarm system maybe?

Thanks James, yes, it is indeed that part, however, mine is fitted over to one side, not at all square etc. it just didn't look like the kinda job I would expect from the factory.

I generally like to sit as low as possible with the wheel relatively high and close to my chest. I can get it close enough, for sure, but I would generally expect to be able to get a good inch or so further down than I currently am.

It's no biggie, to be honest, just something that I thought wouldn't hurt asking about.

Also thanks everyone else for the confirmation and welcome. Wrote this post about 30 minutes ago and forgot to hit send.

I believe the mic along with the head unit and stuff would be fitted down at the UK docks and not from the factory as these are UK head units I believe so will have them fitted once they arrive in the UK. As for hight, I originally thought the same, as in my Clio 200, I could have the steering wheel quite high up but now that I've been driving it for so long, it actually feel right to me and that it's not actually too low, more like I was driving with the steering wheel too high in the Clio.

Welcome to the club and congrats. Got any plans for the car at all? Mods? Track days? Shows? I'm sure if you really wanted to, you could reposition the mic.

That would explain a lot if that's the case haha, looks like it was done by a monkey of some description, and I think you may be right with your point about the Clio. I came from a 2010 Ibiza Cupra, I sat as low as possible with the wheel as high as possible, maybe that was just my mistake.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I absolutely have a bunch of plans, and completely intend on attending as many shows as possible. I've been part of the club scene since I started driving, and my cars have featured in a few magazines, and one or two show winning stands, so I'm no stranger to it :)

As for plans, I am currently just enjoying the car, replacing the bits I feel like I need to (gear knob especially, followed by exhaust etc.). End game plans, sometime down the line (maybe 18 months or so) I would like to have a car sat on 18" wheels and coilovers, supercharged with a full manifold and exhaust system, 4 pot AP racing brakes etc. The car is a daily driver, but I've always done track days when available, so it will need to perform in that respect, and my past cars have all had a minimum of a few grand thrown at them to make them mine, so this one won't be any different. I hope to see you guys around, I would assume you'll mostly be attending Japfest etc., in which case, I'll make an effort to come and say hi (as I'll likely be on my own club stand).

All the handfree stuff and alarm is fitted at Portbury Docks.

I think in terms of your driving position, maybe it is just that and you are trying to get a similar driving position that you may have had in previous cars. In the Clio you sit too high anyway, so lowering the steering wheel would be appropriate in regard to a gaining a better driving position.
