Keethos 842 Report post Posted February 25, 2014 Hey all, I've got a wedding to attend in Toulouse at the start of August and I plan on driving down there, anyone done a similar route that they'd suggest taking or know of any amazing roads I need to take? I've got a 2 weeks off, the wedding is right in the middle of this time off (so Saturday 2nd August) so from 28th July, I need to get there for the 1st August at the latest. And then after the wedding (so either the Sunday 3rd or Monday 4th, I'm free to wonder somewhere else before needing to be back by Saturday 9th or Sunday 10th at the latest, any suggestions on where would be a good place to visit that I could still make it back in time? Where's that place with the old race track that is now just abandoned/derelict public road? I take it you only pay tolls on motorways.....so just stick with normal roads right? Any other hits and tips regarding my trip and anyone else keen?
Lauren 2259 Report post Posted February 25, 2014 Reims is the old race track, well worth a stop: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reims-Gueux I'd consider, Monaco and Nice. If you're feeling ambitious why not come back over the Alps?
Subota Boy 402 Report post Posted February 25, 2014 Keith - great atmosphere at Reims !! You can still follow the course of some of the circuit
Riceburner 284 Report post Posted February 25, 2014 Nice one Keith, thats close to spanish border & pyrenees, but the route through france is extremely flat.I did a lot of midfrance last year on our road trip.Field after field after field of stuff growing. This place is worth a visit though; Oradour-sur-Glane en route of course. Keethos 842 Report post Posted February 27, 2014 Wow, this trip is guna be mega miles.....I'm planning on heading down from Warwick all the way down to Toulouse, most probably avoiding as much motorway as possible but still need to find a decent route. Rich, what's so special about Oradour-sur-Glane? I've got about 5 days to head there so will probably just head straight down, but come the Sunday, a mate will be flying out to Toulouse where I'll pick him up and that's where the real journey begins. We've got about 6 days to travel from Toulouse to visit these Passes and get back home in time for work : - Route Napoleon / Alps Maritimes - http://www.ultimatedrives.net/top-10-roads/details.php?route_ID=100009 - Col de la Bonnette / Alps Maritimes - http://www.ultimatedrives.net/top-10-roads/details.php?route_ID=100005 - Furka Pass / Central Swiss Alps - http://www.ultimatedrives.net/top-10-roads/details.php?route_ID=4001 - Klausen Pass / Central Swiss - http://www.ultimatedrives.net/top-10-roads/details.php?route_ID=9007 - San Bernardino Pass / Central Swiss Alps - http://www.ultimatedrives.net/top-10-roads/details.php?route_ID=4011 - Susten Pass / Central Swiss Alps - http://www.ultimatedrives.net/top-10-roads/details.php?route_ID=9011 - Route 500 Schwarzwald Hochstrasse / Black Forest - http://www.ultimatedrives.net/top-10-roads/details.php?route_ID=20007 The if we have time, stop off at Reims (though I might stop off there on the way down to Toulouse) but it's guna look something like this: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/dir/Toulouse,+France/Route+Napol%C3%A9on,+04000+Digne-les-Bains,+France/Col+de+la+Bonette/Furka+Pass,+3999+Oberwald,+Switzerland/Klausen+Pass/San+Bernardino+Pass/Susten+Pass/Hotel+Gut+Lauterbad,+Dietrichstra%C3%9Fe+5,+72250+Freudenstadt,+Germany/Reims,+France/Warwick+CV34+5YZ,+UK/@48.3247363,-3.0842169,5z/data=!4m65!4m64!1m5!1m1!1s0x12aebb6fec7552ff:0x406f69c2f411030!2m2!1d1.444209!2d43.604652!1m5!1m1!1s0x12cb9078a4733f13:0x43b203eb6b53f988!2m2!1d6.199664!2d44.0821178!1m5!1m1!1s0x12ccf2423c02285d:0xb14b6ebb8e26d40c!2m2!1d6.8074733!2d44.3266994!1m5!1m1!1s0x47857938f20195e9:0x4ec4487edce90c12!2m2!1d8.4148637!2d46.5724095!1m5!1m1!1s0x47853eb39583088f:0xc96402d70f872af1!2m2!1d8.8555813!2d46.8681722!1m5!1m1!1s0x4784f8e279e7ba4b:0xb069300277121b17!2m2!1d9.17079!2d46.4959!1m5!1m1!1s0x4785640a8a289a61:0x615a64aaa6360e6b!2m2!1d8.4470234!2d46.7293696!1m5!1m1!1s0x4797350ede19a897:0x24a426bfb9c84735!2m2!1d8.432679!2d48.441002!1m5!1m1!1s0x47e974334a533b09:0x40a5fb99a3b45c0!2m2!1d4.031696!2d49.258329!1m5!1m1!1s0x4870cb3a9a691557:0x85d750b463aabd7f!2m2!1d-1.5816497!2d52.2958333!2m1!1b1!3e0!4e1 This will obviously need to be adjusted to have a bit of motorway driving in some areas to speed up the journey to allow time for stops and what not but I think this might be roughly the plan......people's thoughts? Anyone done any of these passes? Do I need to know anything about entering Switzerland and Germany at all?

Lauren 2259 Report post Posted February 27, 2014 Switzerland will cost you CHF40 for the motorway pass at the border. You'll get stopped at Basel. I've driven all the passes except the San Bernadino as we went on the Stelvio instead. You should also add the Grimselpass. The best bit of driving road ever is the Grimsel/Sustenpass. Just incredible. Also you should look up Chris (Killerbee on FT forum) as he is a local and knows his way round very well. Do not attempt the passees on a weekend, make sure it's a weekday. Chris will happily take a day off work to show you round, but he won't drive at weekends as it's too busy. Reims is an easy stop on the way down BTW. It's a 10 minute drive if that from the motorway. It took 13 hours for me to drive from London to Basel. That was all motorway. I did it in a day.
