Deacon 1357 Report post Posted February 8, 2014 The rays are beautiful wheels. Considering red for my wheels too. Quite surprised by the weight though - mine are 7kg for 17x7 and I'd expected the rays to be quite a bit lighter.
Lauren 2259 Report post Posted February 8, 2014 I guess another inch of width is going to add some weight. Mine seemed to be covered in wheel weights too, but that can't add that much really. I think the reality is a few hundred grams is neither here nor there in respect of how it will drive. The Rays wheels are forged, they are going to be pretty strong. So weight and strength is always a trade off really.
Keethos 842 Report post Posted February 8, 2014 They are rather chunky wheels....what kind of weight were you expecting Lauren?
Lauren 2259 Report post Posted February 9, 2014 Tbh, Keith, I wasn't expecting any particular weight as such. I tend not to obsess about wheel weight, or weight saving generally when it comes to road cars. I guess they're 2kgs lighter than stock wheels which will likely make no difference at all to how the car feels on the road. I'm quite interested though to see how the bit of stretch on the tyre affects the sidewall stiffness. I expect it to be stiffer. I'm more worried about this red powdercoating looking alright, feel like I've really taken a punt on going for that colour!
Lauren 2259 Report post Posted February 13, 2014 Replacement stickers have arrived! 1 rob275 reacted to this
Keethos 842 Report post Posted February 14, 2014 Hmmmm.... I'm excited to see the finished product....how long left till you get the wheels back and on your car then Lauren?
Lauren 2259 Report post Posted February 14, 2014 I should be picking up the wheels tomorrow.
keelerad 256 Report post Posted February 15, 2014 Don't try and put those stickers on yourself! Remember TSS. Lining up stickers carefully is definitely not part of your skill set. Will they be on for the 22nd? Alec
Lauren 2259 Report post Posted February 15, 2014 LOL, don't worry, Alec, the stickers are a job for Mark! I'm not sure as I probably should leave the winter tyres on till March really. I pick them up in a couple of hours time.
Lauren 2259 Report post Posted February 15, 2014 A few quick pics of the refurbed wheels: You can see the little bit of stretch here:
Lauren 2259 Report post Posted February 15, 2014 Question is, should I change the side stripes to match, or leave them black?
will300 812 Report post Posted February 15, 2014 Lauren - I hope its just the pictures but they look really flat & dull. For comparison:
Lauren 2259 Report post Posted February 15, 2014 Those wheels Will are anodised. Mine are powder coated. Just took a few more pics to try and show the colour in a more natural light: Stretch: I think this is the rim that had the bent lip. Now repaired, can only just see it:
will300 812 Report post Posted February 15, 2014 Those second lot of pictures look much better. It might be worth getting some of this wheel armour, while you've got them off the car: http://gtechniq.com/shop/3s-for-cars/exterior-coatings/c5-wheel-armour/
Keethos 842 Report post Posted February 15, 2014 Awesome stuff Lauren, how much more would have anodising them have cost? Here's a quick mock-up for you:
Lauren 2259 Report post Posted February 15, 2014 Cheers Keith. I don't know I didn't find out about anodising. They had already been powder coated previously in the gold colour but would have been anodised out of the factory. I just thought powder coating would suffice if that makes sense. It cost me £230 for the refurb and £575 for the wheels, so spent enough on it for now. I knew anodising would be more expensive, but not really sure how much. It's a bit more specialised. I was also a bit unsure about the colour as it's quite bold, but admit I was blown away when I clapped my eyes on them! Hmm, interesting with the side striped matched. I'm not sure. Think I'll leave it and ponder it when the wheels have been on a while. Will, I think it was the fluorescent lighting in the garage that washed the colour out a bit in the pics. They are actually pretty bright in the flesh so to speak.
Keethos 842 Report post Posted February 15, 2014 I quite like it with the red strip, the wheels are pretty bold but then it's a bit more subtle with the black strip, but going red strip too makes it stand out even more......can you can't go wrong with a white and red theme! This was the spec and look I was going for when I was contemplating getting the Megane RS
Lauren 2259 Report post Posted February 15, 2014 Yeah, food for thought I think. Here's a mock up with stickers and nuts on:
rob275 1817 Report post Posted February 15, 2014 These are going to look awesome when they are on! Can't wait to trip up there.
Lauren 2259 Report post Posted February 18, 2014 Okay all done. Decided to go for the red stripe in the end. Glad I did. Obviously everyone thinks it needs lowering and I will be researching options in regard to this. Totally stunned by the result it looks like a different car. Had it's 30K service at the same time too. Big thanks to Richard at RRG Macc for getting stuff organised. I'm loving the TRD aero fins. Glad I went for body colour as it's almost subtle in comparison to the wheels. Maybe the TRD logo should be red?
Keethos 842 Report post Posted February 18, 2014 That looks awesome Lauren! For a second, it looked almost porsche like: And yes, I reckon the TRD needs to be in Red....you can barely see it at all under the fine!!! And yeah, lowering it will make it look cracking! Lauren 2259 Report post Posted February 18, 2014 Thanks, Keith. The GT3RS wa where I got the inspiration from.
