    GT86 Gearboxes

Ah sorry, I only glanced as it as we drove past the workshop so didn't get a good look at it. Looked like an aero at first glance :-)

    GT86 Gearboxes

Update: I went to my local Toyota dealer today - Motorline Toyota Gatwick. For reference, I dealt with Aaron the service adviser and Kevin the service technician. Their customer service was excellent, I would be happy to let them service my car when it is due in September. Anyway, Kevin let me drive first and guess what, with someone else in the car I couldn't recreate the problem. Kevin then had a go and couldn't get it to crunch either. He said it felt like other GT86 boxes and that they tend to feel better at higher revs, it was the way they were designed. Mine certainly does feel perfect at higher revs but I have certainly experienced a light crunch/snatch from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd at low revs on the odd occasion. It is possible I have just got a bit ham fisted after driving my girlfriends Yaris for the past few months. Now that I am aware I have adjusted my technique slightly and I can change every time with no snatch/crunch. On a side note, crunch might be the wrong word to describe this. A crunch to me is something someone else in the car would notice/hear, this isn't. You just feel it through the gear-stick and it is slight, not major. Kevin did notice the slightly stiff 3rd to 2nd down shift, the car was still cold and it is freezing outside. For the moment he suggests just keeping an eye on it but he doesn't feel or hear anything different to a normal GT86. He did say at the next service to maybe change the gearbox oil to help with the 3rd to 2nd downshift when cold, but this disappears after a few minutes and that seems to be a common issue anyway so I am not overly concerned by that. They had 2 ginger aero's down there, one had a turbo on it. So at least they are used to dealing with GT86's to some extent. I will just keep an eye on this for the moment, I still have 3 and a half years warranty left on it so if anything major happens, I am covered anyway.

    GT86 Gearboxes

Yeah I expect they will but I will let everyone know what they say. To be fair I drove 4 before I bought this one, one of them was really bad and you could visibly see the gear stick shaking a lot when driving, that one didn't like 2nd hear much either. None of the ones I drove had a gearbox I would call perfect, but then I have owned a few vtec Honda's and they were prone to similar issues.

Yeah that would be a good description for what I am feeling. As I said, you can't hear it but you can feel it and it is little as opposed to major. If I change more slowly it doesn't do it. I might let my local Toyota drive it just to see what they say.

    Best catback exhaust

I want to hear and see some in the flesh before I decide which exhaust to go for. I would prefer something like an ARK or an HKS on the face of it, but they are both very expensive. You pay your money, you take your choice

I would second this. Coming from a history of modifying Honda's, Japanese and even American made exhausts beat the stuff from the UK every single time. Sound, build quality, you name it.

    Your Fuel Economy?

Only had my car a little over a week. I am getting about 37mpg on my commute, this is with some motorway, some a road and some sitting in traffic due to roadworks Mine is a 2016 Aero so I think it is supposed to be a bit worse than the non Aero cars due to the drag caused by the rear wing Oh and I have only used V Power so far. On the way back from picking it up I averaged over 44mpg. This was because there was not much traffic so I had a clear run on a, b and m roads.

Hi All, I am hoping to pull the trigger on a 2016 Aero this weekend so just thought I would check in. I joined the other forum first (http://www.gt86ownersclub.co.uk/forum) as on the face of it appeared to be the busiest of the two. In terms of club stands at show's, meet's etc. do the two clubs join up or is it totally separate? Do I have to pick a side?

    Upgrading Headunit for sound quality?

Sorry, slightly off topic, has anyone tried an underseat sub in their gt86? Would one fit under the passenger seat? It might be better for bass than changing the speakers.......

Gearbox issue improved by thinner oil

I had my 2016 GT86 just a few days and do notice it but it doesn't really bother me to be honest. I think it's because I come from years of VTEC Honda's which suffer similar issues, in fact I had a 1995 Honda Prelude about 12 years ago that felt exactly the same. You usually find with these things there is a 'knack' to it and once you get used it you don't think about it anymore.

Out of interest, some people must have gone back to Toyota with the 2nd gear issue, what is Toyota's stance on it?

    Calling Aero Owners

Ok well as there are a few of us with the issue I will leave it as it is for the moment I think. If it gets worse I might take it to a body shop to see what they say, but I certainly don't want the risk of making it worse.

    Upgrading Headunit for sound quality?

Distortion? I haven't experienced that in mine. I don't know if it makes any difference but I have the touch and go sat nav touchscreen, my car is a 2016 Aero but as far as I know the speakers are the same. What volume have you turned it up to? Mine goes up to 50 without any distortion, I haven't tried it any higher yet. That's playing music through spotify via bluetooth with the bluetooth volume on the phone up to max. I don't know if it makes any difference but I also have all my music downloaded on Spotify set to "high quality" rather than standard. I have also turned the bass up a few notches on the head unit but left everything else as is. Like I said, from what people had been saying I was expecting the sound quality to be much worse than I am experiencing. At some point I may go for the Focal upgrade and add a small amount of sound deadening just around the speaker in the door but I don't want to add much weight, if any. I find the head unit ok, apart from that it is a little slow to boot up. I would like to hear in person other people's set ups before I go mucking with mine. You could potentially throw several hundred pounds at it for little gain.

Ergh, thanks for the heads up. The only thing I would say is that every Toyota dealer is different as there are so many different franchises. If I do take it in I will ask them exactly what they plan to do before handing the car over.

    Upgrading Headunit for sound quality?

Having only recently picked up my GT86 and coming from cars with better sound systems, I would say you are going to gain very little by changing the head unit or speakers due to the lack of sound deadening in the doors. However, from what I read on here before I picked my car up I was expecting the sound quality to be much worse than it actually is. I think for a noticeable difference you will probably want a load of sound deadening, amped aftermarket speakers and a sub in the boot.

Thanks for the reply, glad mine is not the only one then. Yes, I too have OCD when it comes to stuff like that. I might take it to the local Toyota to see what they say but I don't want them mucking with it and making it worse.

Welcome along, I am in Sussex also, but still on the hunt for my first GT86. I am after the Aero only and am very fussy about condition which is why it is taking a bit longer than planned.

He was a nice guy but had just done no prep whatsoever. Although it is not all down to him, the dealership in general should have prepared the car to a better standard. The dealer is based in Northamptonshire.

Don't worry, I had already driven one at a local dealer and loved it but the car wasn't for me due to one of the doors having being painted at some point. I want an as new one without actually buying new Saturday's experience didn't put me off getting a GT86 at all which says a lot about how much I like the GT86!

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. I traveled for nearly 2 hours on Saturday to see a black aero on a 16 plate from a Toyota dealer. It was the worst test drive I have ever had, the salesman said the same. When I arrived, the bonnet was up and the car was having it's battery charged, not a good start. Then, I got in the car and there was condensation on the inside of both the front and rear windscreen. This was possibly down to the windows being slightly down due to the flat battery? Next, there was a warning light on the dashboard, but this turned out to be tire pressures so no big deal. On the test drive, we ran out of petrol, luckily we were right next to a petrol station so I was able to coast into that. The dealer put £10 in, I went to start the car, and it wouldn't start as the battery was still flat, so we had to sit there for 20 minutes until someone came from the dealership to jump start the car. The car felt quite "lumpy" after that, possibly due to the fact we had run out of petrol previously. In addition, when sitting at traffic lights in neutral, and then putting the clutch down there was a clunk sound, not sure if this is normal or not. The engine note was different and more high pitched than the previous one I had driven, and finally, after all that I got out to inspect the bodywork properly as it was a bit wet before the test drive and there was a scratch on the roof and several scratches on the driver's door and front wing. All in all, not what I expect for a car costing over £20k. I think most of it was down to the dealer not doing simple things like putting some fuel in, ensuring the battery wasn't flat, checking the tire pressures etc. It goes without saying that I didn't buy that one and will continue to look.
