    Show us your scars!

Glad to hear you are fixed up now. Looking at that 2nd picture though, I think they may have left their razor behind!
  2. Thanks for the info. Unfortunately I am on the list!

    Lowering springs?

Have you thought about the Eibach pro kit? I bought a set of those because they have a great reputation and its not too extreme a drop. They say a 20mm rear and 25mm front drop (not sure if they fit a 2017 car though). Not sure when I am going to get the time to fit them though!

    Sound deadening

I havent done anything to my 86 yet but that is what I used in my MR2 and am very happy with it. From the googling I did, the advice seemed to be that you got most benefit from some sound deadening product and diminishing returns from doing the whole panel so I did a lot on the doors but much less on the floor. I went round tapping panels with my knuckle and if it sounded hollow then on went a bit of silent coat. It goes a long way this way. I also put some sound deadening foam (the black stuff) on the firewall as well. This really helped the sound in the MR2 so well worth doing. When I get some time I will do the same to the 86.
  5. Very neatly done. I agree on sanding back the oak as I think it would look better matching the rest of the surround in smooth gloss black.

Gaydon Heritage Motor Museum Meet 07/07/18

Finally had a look at my pictures so thought I would put a few up. Thankfully we had reserved parking..... And a look around the two museums; In for the expensive 80000 mile "flux capacitor" service; I think they have put the lights on the wrong end...

    What to look for?

Congratulations, great choice there, a 13 plate in red....... 2nd august is going to take a long time to come around. My advice on the insurance front would be to only do mods when you take out a new policy as you will get a much better deal shopping for the mods (you are about to do). I have a new spoiler and lowering springs already in the cupboard waiting for renewal time!

Great to meet everyone today and a good run there and back with some quiet roads! Not had a chance to look at my pictures yet as I had to watch some football as soon as I got home...

    New Owner from Bath

Hi and welcome, I went for the auto too and am really happy with it. I am also very tempted by the TD package and the 4.67 final drive change though. I dont think I have read any bad comments about either of 2 mods.

    Nav

Hi, Congratulations, hoping you are enjoying the car. Nav was an option and mine doesnt have it either so get the same message. I have seen the nav units on e-bay and think its a plug in to the back of the HU but not looked into it.

    Painting carbon fibre bonnet

Does the Ford dealership have their own spray booth? Probably not I would guess. Some dealerships have mobile paint sprayers visit and spray the cars for them (often in the car park) so they are no doubt taking a nice mark up. I would check out the mobile guys local to you for the best prices. A fair bit of my MR2 has been painted this way!

    In Phase XTC

I fancy changing my front speakers too so interested in views on this myself. I have been searching for info too but I cant find any mention of the front 4" speakers. I understand that the focal kit (about £125 on ebay) is designed to replace the existing door speaker and tweeter as a straight swop so dead easy, but no mention is made of what you do with the 4" speaker. Leaving the crappy speaker in there with the nice new door speaker and tweeter doesnt sound ideal? I cant see that a cross over is included with the focals either which makes them pricey compared to other, good make, component speakers of that size. If you go for something other than the focals I imagine some soldering and cutting of the existing wiring would be needed in order to use the toyota connectors. There is also a risk the tweeters wont fit causing a headache? As far as I can see, the focals are designed to plug straight into the toyota connectors, the basket will fit straight in and the tweeters fit (sort of) into the existing holes. As above though, not sure about what is used for crossovers or what happens with the 4" speaker? Of the items you have linked to, you should be able to get cheaper trim removal tool sets as that one includes tools for taking out aftermarket head units etc which you may not need. If you want to keep costs down you may either be able to make your own mdf mounts with a jigsaw or maybe gut the toyota speakers and mount the new speakers in the old basket (not actually taken my own door skins off yet so not sure if that will work on the 86). Silent coat is good and definitely has helped my previous cars. You might want to wait before buying the insulation rings until you know if you need them as they look pretty thick (and expensive for a pair!). Perhaps you could cut up an old mouse mat and make your own? Sorry a bit long-winded and am looking forward to learning something / being corrected!

    Upgrading Headunit for sound quality?

I am no expert but have used silent coat and like it. It was a lot cheaper than that link on amazon when I bought it about a year ago though. I have also used flashband too which is cheaper still but silent coat has a stronger top layer which I imagine helps and is slightly less messy to apply. I bought one sheet of dynamat but havent actually used it yet but doesnt jump out as obviously better than silent coat to look at but as I say, I am no expert. Lots of videos on youtube about sound deadening but, as always, not always easy to know who to believe! There seems to be a consensus though that you get most benefit from having a little sound deadening on each panel and only slight improvements as you apply more. I applied it to the floor and firewall of my MR2, just tapping the panels looking for noisy ones and putting a small bit of SC in the centre. It certainly made the car a lot quieter. Unless you are trying to get the best sound possible, I wouldnt worry too much and just have a go.

    Fensport Reverse Camera Installation

I have no experience of the fensport kit. But basic reverse cameras have the 2 red wires off one wire which I think is so that you can connect the camera to a feed that becomes live when you select reverse and they give an option at either end to give more options about using the feed from near the head unit or reverse light and you would connect one end and tape off the unused end. I guess the other positive would be to power up the screen when reverse is selected (again for the basic generic camera). Can you connect your own earth wire to the transmission tunnel or metal dash brackets and connect the harness wire to that with a connector block? Not sure though if this will help you with the fensport kit and working with the std head unit but hope it will help!

Well, I have only had my 86 for about a month but I have been wondering the same! I am curious to hear what others say.

    Passenger window fault

I have had occasional problems with the windows not going up properly so good to hear how to do the reset. I wouldnt put vaseline on though because it is petroleum based and damages the rubber. I have bought some Gummi Pflege Stift because it is specifically designed for door/window seals and gets good reviews. Havent got round to trying it yet but have at least found my bottle at last so its on the list of things to do.

    Locking but chewed. Extremely tight

The same happened on my MR2. I couldnt shift it and it was starting to round off. I took it to a tyre place and they got it off with my key and their gun as presumably they could put all their weight keeping the key on the wheelnut whereas I was having to turn and try to keep it pressed on firmly. If that dosnt work, they should have a tool for stripped wheel nuts. Make sure you have another nut to go one with you!
