RATIO 1:6 BRZ:GT86

Recommended Posts

Does it sound true that apparently Subaru are only allowed to sell 1 BRZ for every 6 GT86's sold in the UK? Would explain why BRZ's are seen even less than the 86 (which is rare in itself!).

Doesn't sound true to me, heard from friend in car business.

Have you ever thought that it maybe because of the amount ot Toyota dealers to Subaru dealers in the uk.

That was the deciding factor for me*. I wanted a BRZ but no stealers within 40 miles and three Toyota within 5.

* Except for the colour issue, obv.

While there are more Toyota dealers than Subaru dealers, the differential is nowhere near enough to account for the sales. The ratio of Toyota dealers to Subaru is more like 3:1 (200:72).

As far as I'm aware, the main reason for the difference in sales was because Toyota put a limit on the number of cars Subaru could sell. They would only allow Subaru to sell 1 for every 10 GT86's. That number was reduced to 1 for every 5 in 2015 I believe. That's all information I got from my local dealer anyway.

It was all to do with the deal between Toyota and FHI. Toyota pretty much funded the venture so they got the majority of the production line. The ratio worldwide was set, how that breaks down into individual markets I'd imagine will come down to expected sales.

Initially it was also partially influenced by the fact the 86 had a 5 year warranty and the brz only a 3. The large discrepancy in servicing price has also probably played a part too.

But, as others have said, it mainly relates to the production deal done between FHI and Toyota.

When I bought my car (BRZ), the dealership told me that in the UK, the deal does indeed mean that Subaru can only sell a 10th of what Toyota sell. If you check the howmany left website you will see there are 17,964 GT86s out there vs a mere 1,554 BRZs meaning the figure is slightly higher than 10 to 1.

How many left give the TOTAL on the roads, so it's only 5,000 vs 500. It's very scary looking at the sales graph... only 192 new registed GT86 cars so far this year compared to 48 BRZ's so that would suggest there's more BRZ's available in stock they can sell.

Like I said, I'm fairly sure the number has been lowered to 5:1 now (local dealer told me), which lines up more with current figures, so seems true.

You certainly don't see many about. It's an odd feeling when as far as I'm concerned it's the best place you can put £20-25k

Is it because the finance figures aren't competitive or something? I know a lot of people buy on PCP these days. Can you get more expensive cars for similar £s per month?

Yep, my mistake. I added up the values for all years not realising it was the total not just for each year. It is currently 4885 vs 501. I guess one question is how up to date this info is, GT86s registered in 2014 and 2015 were over 700 where as less than 200 showing for 2016, unless most people buy when the September reg comes out.

The finance rates have slightly bottomed out, as the GFV on new cars has dropped nearly 3k it's an extra £75 a month on a car with a low deposit (taking mine for example if I was to buy it now under finance the monthly figure would change from £380 to £450, even though overall I'm roughly paying the same). Compare that to buying a 2-3 year old second hand one for 17k with a bank loan, that's only £10 a month more and you're no longer having to save 9k to pay the finance off at the end.

Try finding one .. !! Deliveries on new cars, unless you find exactly what you want (or don't care!), are over six months .. they are now planning, and soon to close, the production allocation for February 2017!!
