Welsh Mountain Drive - 18th/19th June

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Just throwing this out there as an open invite to anyone who may be in the area for the weekend of the 18th and 19th of June. Myself and Chris (with the blue wrapped stage 4 turbo '86) will be doing a small Welsh drive over that weekend.

Details are not completely ironed out yet. As we get closer to the time I could provide meeting times if anyone wanted to tag along. If you are interested, just let me know what day, and where you would be willing to meet us, and we'll work something out.

Initial plans are to meet at the Evo triangle, most likely Saturday morning, then drive over towards Snowdonia and potentially stay in a hotel there for the night. Sunday drive down the west coast of Wales and work our way across the Brecon Beacons, before Chris heads off back home to Lincoln and I make the arduous journey down to South Wales.

I'm totally up for this. Keep bugging my friends for a road trip to the triangle, unfortunately they always seem to be busy. Funny that

Righto then guys and girls, be prepared to take a look at the outcome of my afternoon in "work".

I've designed a route for our weekend, incorporating as many of the best Welsh driving roads into one route, probably stretched over two days. This route will include the Evo Triangle, Llanberris pass, Elan Valley, some coastal roads, and of course the Black Mountain pass made so famous by Top Gear.

All in all, this route accounts for around 320 miles of prime Welsh roads, clocking in at around 9 hours worth of driving. Taking into account stops for fuel, food, pictures and general socialising, I think we should be in for a decent few days of driving.

The route: https://drive.google.com/open?id=10kiEJIMl6CDKEP58a-uUJNNoE6g&usp=sharing

As far as I'm aware, Chris and a few of his friends will be staying in a hotel Friday night, and I'll be heading up Saturday morning. I assume we will grab some breakfast, then head off mid morning some time.

Saturday night, I am yet to discuss with Chris. I don't know if he plans to head back to his hotel in North Wales, or stay in Aberystwyth as I had thought about. Either way, I assume the second day will be much the same, with the route ending in Brecon, I'm sure we can find a nice country pub for an afternoon lunch.

As before, still not much set in stone, so if people are interested, it is probably best that I just give you a time to meet, and we'll just wing it as the day goes on.

That being said, I have a question. Does anybody know how to export the map above (I have a KML and KMZ file) into a sat nav app? I can't get it to work on Google Maps, otherwise I could load it on Google Maps in my car and use it for navigation :/

I would have loved to join you as I had a blast last time around wales but sadly I'm off up to Scotland to do something similar (North Coast 500 route) that weekend.

What nav software are you using?  I've used a program called Route Converter which uses Google maps to plan with (though not necessarily as user friendly) and then I can export that route out as a .trp file which Co-Pilot can read.  It can read in the KML and KMZ files (though no idea what it'll look like) so you can then tweak and export them back out as the relevant format you need for your nav (there is a relatively large list but no idea if your nav is supported).

Just a quick reminder on this, in case anyone's recently become available this weekend.

We plan to meet at the starting point between 9:30-10am, and do most of the route outlined in my link above on the first day. More than happy for anyone to tag along on any stage of the journey :)

For those who are coming, it may be a good idea to PM me your mobile numbers in case there are any changes of plan/times etc. in the morning. I have a 3 hour drive to make, so any traffic could delay me.
