  4. 24th March 2013. 24th March 2019 A few external changes, and under the bonnet looks a bit different. Oh, and it's a bit lower and sounds and rides different and goes and stops quicker, but feels essentially the same as it did six years ago today. Happy birthday!

    2nd Gen GT86

I loved our car the moment I saw it, and love it more after each modification. Had it nearly six years and don't expect to sell it until I can't get in it anymore (being an OAP). If you buy one of these just to keep it for a few years and move on to something else you will likely take a hit. I will never get back the money for the modifications undertaken, and never expected to, but the joy of this expensive hobby comes at a cost that I am willing to pay. The enjoyment I get from just going for a drive in this car is difficult to express in monetary terms. 😊

New Supra to be unveiled on Monday

First I have heard about malpractice penalties !! Recall problems - I wonder if Toyota have an ability to offset the cost of the valve spring recall to Subaru? Toyota dealers don't seem to like the Subaru flat-four, in my experience, which could support a move by the company to BMW-sourced engines. I know Toyota own a share of Subaru, but who knows?

New Supra to be unveiled on Monday

So this Supra is made by a contract manufacturer, Magna Steyr, in Austria. Was the contract with BMW or Toyota? I guess BMW from other info I have seen on line? If the drivetrain is all BMW, built by BMW, but designed by Toyota, I wonder how much it will drive like a Japanese car?

Flat battery - locked out - BROKE key

I would not want to turn off a dash cam in heavy slow traffic just to save the battery, but I would wait to eat a waffle once the traffic had thinned out. I will therefore raise the issue of domestic appliances with Toyota soonest!

Flat battery - locked out - BROKE key

My replacement 65ah Toyota battery has been playing up, and lasts about 2 days after a charge. It is now on permanent trickle charge as I don't trust even the 65ah battery. It was fitted under warranty in November 17. I was reading the manual, specifically page 405, regarding how to avoid a discharged battery. One of the bullet points reads " Turn off any unnecessary electrical components when the vehicle is running at a low speed for an extended period, such as in heavy traffic, etc".

    What supercharger? (Maybe turbo)

Was roaming round You Tube when I came across a video entitled "Everything about superchargers" which had some useful info, you might find.

Toyota press GT86's and my GT86

On our first GT86 test drive in July 2012, not realising that this had been in the hands of Autocar before ending up at my local dealer. Wonder what happened to it.
  22. My experience with two Toyota dealerships and the Subaru boxer is that the technicians are not keen to work on the boxer. And that was before I had the charger fitted. Maybe their training has not been so comprehensive due to the small numbers of our cars sold compared with their bread and butter engines? Who knows! Alright, they may HAVE to do the work, and guarantee it, but I think in some cases the mindset of the technician tackling it may not be best placed to ensure a perfect job. Can't see this recall being embraced with open arms by the dealerships, unless we can all go to Macclesfield. I am going to chat to my local Subaru dealership, who also sell the Alfa and Abarth ranges, to see how they are viewing this. They deal with complex Italian engines and are obviously well trained on the Subaru flat four. They fitted my supercharger and I trust them. Maybe I will have to suck up the cost for the piece of mind. I intend to wait to see the results of some of the work done by Toyota to see what issues arise.
  23. Thanks for some very helpful comments on here. Going to Toyota with forced induction will add an interesting complication to the replacement process requiring negotiation and additional cost I would imagine. Not sure I want a Toyota technician doing major work on my engine and then expecting it to be re-installed successfully. Certainly my local dealership does not like having anything to do with Subaru engines, in my experience so far. Hence why I take it to a Subaru dealership for servicing. I doubt whether Toyota would pay for me to have it fixed by Subaru, but I might ask.
  24. So I ask myself, have there been a lot of failures on our cars that led to identification of this problem? I have not noticed stalling highlighted as a problem on forums. Do the failures occur as mileage increases? I notice that Toyota itself has had at least two recalls on its engines for valve spring fracture going back to 2008, on V6 and V8 engines, I believe. So this problem seems to affect more than just the flat four engines of Subaru.
