Odd marketing from Steven Eagell

Anyone else received a letter from a Toyota dealer, where the whole content is

"GOOD NEWS...!! We have been asked to contact you regarding some good news about your existing vehicle. Please call me on 01908248911 quoting ref TGB-K48 for further information"

"* This is not a circular; you are a nominated customer requested by Toyota GB from our existing records. ** This nomination related to vehicle registration ......."

Firstly, I hope my vehicle exists, and secondly, why won't they actually tell me in a letter what it's about? It smells of sharp marketing to me, wondered who was being showered with these letters.

I always receive some marketing stuff from Steven Eagell,they even gave me a "£250" cheque to spend on a brand new car at their next big event. I just bin the stuff instantly unless it has anything important to do with my car MOT or servicing or something else.

Yeah, I get the new car exclusive bargain miracles-will-occur events stuff from them too. They've written to me five times about servicing being overdue (got Lancaster in Cambridge to handle it) but this is a new theme.

I get them all the time, what they "supposedly" do is they issue ~50-100 letters (yours is #48) from their database each month to offer a discount on a NEW car but you have to "reserve" your discount with the above code and car registration to talk to their head of sales about getting this exclusive not to be missed discount.

I called them out on it last time and I asked what the good news is about my existing vehicle was and the sales person kept repeating that I could trade it in for a new one with a discount, but wouldn't tell me the value over the phone... how is this good news for my existing car?

File it in the bin, if you want to trade in get a quote from anyone with a guide and go to carwow to buy.

Anyone doing this I instantly rule out I'm afraid. It's basically dishonest as there's no 'extra' discount involved. If that's how they operate their business I choose not to deal.

In my experience a decent dealer is quite prepared to talk straight about the value of your car, and what sort of a deal they can offer on a new one.

I appreciate that kind of salesman, because let's face it - it's 2016, I have google, I know exactly what my px is worth and what sort of discount I can reasonably expect. A salesman who acknowledges that, respects it, and then offers me his best deal straight is likely to make the sale. Even if not the cheapest...

Treat me like an idiot and they can sod off.

Incidentally the previously excellent local BMW dealer changed hands recently and this kind of marketing crap has started... Another one off my list...

Kinda annoying when you sign a deal with the dealers they don't give you some type of form for you to opt out of promotional offers or if you want them..unless i'm blind and i didn't see it in the terms and conditions.

These sort of strategies i detest the most when signing things,since they say they don't share your "information" but some marketing ploy somehow gets them regardless and contact you about Personal injury claims or you're on some credit watch even though you don't have credit card.

At least you guys are getting these letters from a dealer from which you actually bought a car!

I simply booked a test drive over the phone at an Inchcape Toyota dealership, and I got countless emails and phone calls from them trying to flog me deals, along with a load of letters.

The funny thing is, their service was shocking. The cars I went to look at were all scratched, dirty (mouldy in some places), hadn't been prepared for my visit at all. I turned up at 10am for my appointment, and was made to wait for 40 minutes without even being acknowledged. Luckily, that gave me enough time to see just how poor their stock was.

They ended up compensating me £100 for my travel after I made a complaint (which I still don't think was enough frankly), but yet they still send me promotional marketing documents. Ridiculous.

The guys in Northampton are pretty nice the sales rep,one of them who is part of their sales manager is part of the Car Culture UK group and drives a R33 which i've seen couple times when i've been to 2 of their meets. He is also a good friend of my other friend who drives a Evo VIII.

Just to continue moaning about dealers I had the same one call me up as it flagged on their system my PCP was due to expire in 6 months time and now was the best time to get new car thoughts stuck in my head. Thought I'd play along as some other members had upgraded to Aero. The dealer wouldn't offer any figures over the phone for either a new car or my partex and promised a call back a week later to arrange a visit... No phone call.

So out of curiosity I plugged in what I wanted in CarWow (fully loaded Aero) and 2 dealers came up with a fairly reasonable price that was better than the "manager's special" Steven Eagell run twice a year (one of them was a SE dealer too!). To see how well the dealers knew their product I messaged 3 of them to say I was interested and their price was competitive... but could they get hold of one in blue like the Jap/Euro markets had. Only one dealer replied to say they couldn't do blue as it's not manufactured in that colour (Jap/Euro/NZ do!), the rest didn't reply to my questions at all.

I've learned the error of my ways, when I change car I'll probably buy from an owners club rather than new from dealer.

It's an eternal mystery to me why manufacturers don't police their dealerships better. I can't think of any car brand I wouldn't buy again because the CAR was crap, but there's a few I wouldn't buy because the dealer was...

Luckily there are enough decent dealers and specialists around that I haven't yet run out!
