Hi All,

Apologies in advance for replicating what’s already been said a thousand times! The various threads have been really useful but I still have a few holes in my knowledge and would appreciate your collective assistance.

I am a newbie to the club and a recent new owner of a fab GT86. Like many others, I’m underwhelmed with the speaker setup. I’m looking to purchase some In Phase XTC component speakers, https://www.maplin.co.uk/p/in-phase-xtc-6cx17cm-2-way-component-system-r52mq. Reviews are scarce but typically positive. Does anyone have them, or any experience of them?

XTC6CX Speaker Specification

* Peak input power : 300watts

* Continous input power (RMS) : 60watts

* Sensitivity (1W/1m) : 90dB

* Frequency response : 45hz - 20khz

 * Nominal impedance: 4Ohm

* Woofer magnet 10.97 oz

 * Mounting depth 62.1mm

* Speaker size 17cm (6.5')

* Cut-out diameter: 142mm

My intention is to do a basic upgrade, as I’m not an audiophile or interested in waking the dead with my phat toons. I am happy enough with the head unit (at least for now).  From what I already understand a lot can be gained from sound insulation and deadening, with the addition of some reasonable speakers.

If I go with the component speakers do I need to purchase speaker adapters and or adapter leads for the tweeters, as I believe they have a pass through to the woofer in the door?

My shopping list (purchased) looks like this:

Many thanks in advance.

By the time you've done all of that, you're probably not far off just buying the Focal components which are actually designed to be straight swaps for our car. Probably better off with that tbh..

I fancy changing my front speakers too so interested in views on this myself.

I have been searching for info too but I cant find any mention of the front 4" speakers. I understand that the focal kit (about £125 on ebay) is designed to replace the existing door speaker and tweeter as a straight swop so dead easy, but no mention is made of what you do with the 4" speaker. Leaving the crappy speaker in there with the nice new door speaker and tweeter doesnt sound ideal?

 I cant see that a cross over is included with the focals either which makes them pricey compared to other, good make, component speakers of that size. If you go for something other than the focals I imagine some soldering and cutting of the existing wiring would be needed in order to use the toyota connectors. There is also a risk the tweeters wont fit causing a headache?

As far as I can see, the focals are designed to plug straight into the toyota connectors, the basket will fit straight in and the tweeters fit (sort of) into the existing holes.  As above though, not sure about what is used for crossovers or what happens with the 4" speaker?

Of the items you have linked to, you should be able to get cheaper trim removal tool sets as that one includes tools for taking out aftermarket head units etc which you may not need.

If you want to keep costs down you may either be able to make your own mdf mounts with a jigsaw or maybe gut the toyota speakers and mount the new speakers in the old basket (not actually taken my own door skins off yet so not sure if that will work on the 86).

Silent coat is good and definitely has helped my previous cars.

You might want to wait before buying the insulation rings until you know if you need them as they look pretty thick (and expensive for a pair!). Perhaps you could cut up an old mouse mat and make your own?

Sorry a bit long-winded and am looking forward to learning something / being corrected!

Guest 86guns

On a standard uk GT86 there is no speaker in the 4” space near the tweeter. Hence the Focal component kit just comprises of the door speaker and a tweeter.
