You brought up a  good point so I looked into it a little and apparently a lot of companies are moving from superchargers over to small turbos because of efficiency, since a supercharger takes power from the engine to create more (increases strain, power drain and fuel usage) which is fine on bigger engines like V6 or higher, however, turbos use a waste bi product to create more power re-purposing it. Obviously turbo lag is a thing, even with twin turbos set at different RPM ranges since it has a minimum gas flow to turn quick enough, buutttt some clever people are creating electric motor turbos (currently used in F1) where a electric motor turns the turbine while the engine isn't rev'ing enough to turn it with emissions basically removing actual turbo lag.

Would be hyped to see this sort of thing used in the next 86 😮

You say that but I’ve just fitted a Harrop supercharger on my car and some how or other the fuel consumption on a gentle cruise is near as dammit the same. That being said however it does plummet like a stone if you’re pressing on😂

Yes, that sounds the same.  Did you have it done at Abbey?  Ask Mark to do the same fuelling tweak as he did for mine.

Sort of. I fitted the kit myself and Mark’s lent me an ECUTEK cable/licence dongle so I could flash a base map into the ECU. Then i’ve been sending him engine logs so he can refine the mapping and send me a new one to flash in. Problem is sometimes it’s not easy to capture and issue/explain what the cars doing, so it’s useful to have someone on here with a similar spec car to compare notes with.

Always emissions. Not really sure why toyota strangled the power out with 2 cats, when there are plenty of fast more powerful cars with just as low emissions without putting such a  dent in performance. As you said the upgrade from the likes of TD's N/a tune and replacing the manifold would make a world of difference to a lot of potential drivers.

I’m pretty sure it’s something to do with emissions requirements for type approval. Hence why you can remove the pre-cat in the manifold and still pass an MOT. Certain versions of the Impreza came with three cats because it was the only way they could get them through type approval in some countries.

  4. Yeah it’s an unfortunate quirk of the TD manifold, a few mm in any given direction and that loop pipe gets close to something. In my case I had to grind off a couple of mm on the flange as it was too close to the crank pulley to get the auxiliary belt in/out.

On the subject of issues with auxiliary belts, cheers for the comments/reviews on the Harrop kit. Seeing how you’d faired with yours helped convince me to take the plunge. 👍

  5. Cool, I’ll have a look at that later.

if data analysis is something people would like to see in ECU connect then it maybe worth bunging ECUtek an email. I had a conversation with them about it over the last couple of days and there’s no plan for it at the moment but if enough people express an interest then they may reconsider.

On a side note, are people using the ECUtek Bluetooth module or will it work others? The ECUtek one seems expensive for what it is.

  6. Just out of curiosity, what are people using for data logging/graphing with their cars?

The reason I ask is I’ve had the joy of having borrowed a ECUTEK pro-ECU licence (because Mark@Abbey has been doing some remote mapping for me) for the last week or two and I’ve been playing with the graphing feature for the data logs. Personally I finding viewing them quite interesting as a part of the tuning process but I can see how this would be really useful for track days/racing. Only problem being the pro-ECU kit is around £300 quid and remote mapping isn’t something I see myself doing often. So what are other people using?

  7. So this thread is the result of some boredom induced curiosity. I’ve seen a couple of threads on here recently about people with battery related issues (and I bought a charger on the weekend after my car refused to start on Friday). So I’m wondering, how many people on here have had battery related issues since the start of the Covid19 lockdown started?

I've had my eye on the battery for a while now.  A couple of times it's stuttered, on the edge of failing.  A healthy battery should read over 13V when not under load.  If yours reads 11.5V then it's knackered, too.

Nah, 11.5v should comfortably be recoverable. The charger I ordered turned up today, so fingers crossed. You really need to test the electrolyte to see what state the battery is in (either that or an open circuit test using a voltmeter).

  9. You might want to consider a charger/conditioner rather than a new battery. Mine refused to start the other day and when I stuck a meter on it I found the battery voltage wasn’t actually that though (11.5v) so it would appear the ECU kills the starter signal before th battery is low enough to cause other problems.

Collection and delivery would be useful for people like myself, but would depend on if the cost was cheaper than fuel each way and an overnight stop.

Agreed. I've been thinking about going forced induction for a while and one the downsides of going the TD route is  the travelling (well that and the fact I'd like a DIY option but that's a different discussion entirely).

  11. I’m pretty sure you’ll struggle to find anything other than the Xtrons one unless you’re prepared to go second hand. I had a chat with the guys at my local ICE shop a while back and the best they could suggest was the Kenwood DNX716/DNX715WDABS, neither of which are made anymore.

  12. So other than the current issue, how are you finding the car with the supercharger? I figure it's been a few months now so everything should have basically settled down and you're through the honeymoon period so i'd be interested to know how it's going.

  13. I probably shouldn't be telling you this (as i may have a Cobra resonated mid-pipe for sale in the not to distant future) but fair warning, even with the resonated centre section the Cobra catback is still going to be really quite loud. I've got a TD manifold and a cobra resonated catback (after previously having the non-res version) and tbh i think it's hard to get away from the fact the backbox is tiny, the mid pipe does quieten it down a bit but you still need to shout to hold a conversation at motorway speeds.
