Mechanical parts meticulously maintained with quality oils with huge number of receipts

Underbody rust proofed as car was meant to be a keeper.

  3. Has anyone heard of this taller OEM oil filter that is supposed to give more filtration area? Its part number is 15208AA160.
Heres an example for sale. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/352710207598
Wondering if this is supposed to help with preventing oil starvation issues?
Oil starvation is due to the oil pick up in the Sump not having oil. This happens on long sweeping corners. A bigger oil filter 160 mm instead of 130 won't solve the issue. You need a baffled sump plate.

My (possible simplistic) understanding is that it opens earlier but so you can run more advance slightly earlier but after a period of time your coolant is above the opening thresholds of the OEM thermostat and at this point there's no benefit, so in reality its impact is minimal and limited to the timeframe it takes your coolant to move between the performance thermostat and the OEM thermostat, and on a trackday, I expect that timeframe is measured in minutes, so probably a lap or 2, when you're warming the tires up anyway.

Happy to be corrected, I've never run one, so this is all theory on my part.

I had a similar thought as you and had asked Matt@Cosworth and his feedback was as under.

the low temp thermostat in the car, this is worth about 3-4 bhp on its own plus you can then get another 1.5° of spark in there as the heads are colder which results in another 3 bhp

Am sure Cosworth did their R&D thoroughly on it and have spent hours on testing the engine on an engine dyno which no one else has done. That is why came up with a LT Thermostat in their package. If it were just a transient gain, they wouldn't recommend it.

  5. The oil cooler will have a small flow through always. So it's technically always working ( whether at full opening or partial).

Better is to put a blocker in front of the oil cooler like others have said. I have seen cardboard used here also seen JDM number plate holder which blocks part of front grille.

It's also impt for the oil to get above 100C on and off as fuel in oil and water in oil only vaporise above that temp. Otherwise you have oil dilution issues which are evident if you send oil for Millers used oil analysis.

Did you find any solution to this?

I've still  not - I did mention it to Toyota when I put it in for its last service but they didn't bother checking it and i forgot to ask when i collected the car as they were trying to close for the evening....

My problem went away on its own. So during the hot days this year, i have been using it normally. Sorry , cant help on this one.

  7. Tuning Developments used to be a good option in the past but there are loads of recent negative reviews by members , so I will suggest you avoid.

Why don't you buy the parts you like from who ever offers you the best price and get it fitted from your trusted independent or main Toyota, Subaru dealer. It is quite an easy job for any competent mechanic. You don't need a tune to drive home. Once back get a remote ECUTEK tune from Abbey or Fensport for your hardware combination. They will rent you the hardware needed to tune and its quite easy to do it.

thanks for the advice, I'll have to make my mind up what 4 I will find useful. I only fill up with 99 and i have no problem with heel toe provided im not wearing boots.

Could you explain these in regards to our car: Auto Blip, Launch Control, Flat Foot Shift?

I was under the impression that flat foot shifting wasn't all that useful outside of a turbo car to keep the turbo spooled up between shifts? but I could be wrong

You can read about the features here. The software allows these options, does Flat foot shift give you any real gain especially in an NA car is a good question and probably limited gains , if you do a lot of track time then the time to depress and release clutch is saved.. which will be milli seconds. Thats about it.

  9. Since yours is Manifold and tune, its not complicated but you can get it tuned many ways. One way is like Martin has suggested. Another approach is:

    1. 95 Octane / Standard fuel tune , Standard throttle

    2. 97 Octane tune , Standard Throttle

    3. 99 Octane tune, Sensitive Throttle

    4. 99 Octane tune with Racerom features (Auto Blip, Launch Control, Flat Foot Shift) and Sensitive throttle

Or you can choose permutations and combinations of by mixing and matching.

  10. If you are looking for a grille to protect the radiator for future, the best brand is Zunsport. They make one for the First Gen..

    https://www.zunsport.com/en/subaru-fr/subaru-brz-–-unterer-grill?filter=295

For the facelift, its worth asking them if they can bespoke or if the first one fits.

On another note, normally how frequently do you need to top up intercooler coolant? Assume its not a sealed unit.

  11. Unfortunately there Isn't anything else that comes highly recommended. You could try local Subaru or Toyota dealerships beside RRG and you can't go far wrong as most should know the platform by now as it's no longer new.

Alternately you could bring it down to Abbey Motorsport or Fensport who are reputable indys dealing with this platform since launch.

  12. There was myself and afew others who knew about how TD was up to shady stuff.

I've owned my 86 for about 3 years and have known about this for the past 2 years. I never ever made a thread about it simply because TD had almost a cult like status and anything negative you said about then would get shot down.

Poor parts, poor design, awful quality. Stories of Mike scamming and extorting other owners of this car platform. There are countless stories about his shady practice and even instances where he had over charged his customers only to later stitch himself up and go quiet on people.

His constant reply of 'the courier has it' and 'I'm packaging the item today'. All of these kinds of messages and then not providing tracking numbers etc is just lies when really he hasn't done anything.

Even regarding his forged builds, other owners have questioned why he uses 'skunk2' conrods and his reply was simply 'most people for what they use it for will do fine with this type of rod's' knowing full well that it's a poor quality product - certainly a product he's willing to fit into your engine but not his own.

But his actions have consequences and I'm glad people can finally see how he conducts his business.

Thanks for sharing. I've never been a fan of TD and the whole community went to them because their products were CHEAP. No one once said , you get what you pay for but that old adage holds true. Their product engineering was crude , tolerances poor. What was supposedly good was customer service but even that seems to not hold up. Atleast people now know and will be cautious or avoid!

  13. Hi All,

Sooner or later, my car will need a new clutch and i am exploring the options. I want to ideally upgrade it but with OE quality.

With this in mind, would someone be able to confirm:

    1. The GR86 clutch specs ( torque, power limit) and part number in the UK?

    2. The UK toyota Part Numbers?

    3. If they will be backwards compatible with the Gen 1?

    Thanks in advance

Hi, like yourself, I am after a set from nengun

But my choice is Cusco / sprintex supercharger set-up. Does anyone know if this can be bought here in UK? Or is importing my only option.

     Best regards

    Greg

Abbey Motorsport have been an importer of Sprintex. If you go for it, please buy the intercooled one. Do check with them as they never took off and we have very few of them around. Abbey started recommending Harrop kits after the initial couple of years. Harrop is no longer available, i believe or is on hold. Worth checking that option with Abbey as well.
