  1. Rob

I've found a place based at Silverstone (Grandprix Racewear) thats only just over an hour from home so will give them a try.

As its a helmet I really need to try it on, comes from buying bike helmets in the past and getting it wrong even when I know my size!

Each Manufacturers seem to be slightly different.

Will post how I get on in case others are interested.

    John

I got mine from there. They're really helpful.

Plus there's plenty of motorsport porno around, race cars, gokarts, piccies on the wall of famous patrons, a nice place to buy your gear.

  2. I've been thinking about the effect of removing weight from the moving parts of the engine, e.g. flywheel, pulleys etc and I was wondering just how effective they are. basically, I need the man maths!

so, I came across this description - is this right? does it really effectively lose 45 KG ?

The PERRIN Performance Crank Pulley weighs just 1.2 lbs, which is 3.7 pounds lighter than the stock OEM crank pulley. This reduction in weight from the crank shaft is equal to removing more than 100 lbs of vehicle weight! Throttle response, horsepower and torque are all increased with this easy to install part

so 3.7 lbs is 1.67 KG, so going on from here, if I fitted the fensport pulley kit that is 2.095 lighter do I then effectively remove approx. 56 KG ??

and if I fit a lightened flywheel, does the same maths apply?

    thanks for any feedback.

Not sure about the man maths, but the reduce rotating mass route has worked for me. If you're going to reduce rotating mass, you're best off reducing it everywhere you can so you can feel the cumulative effect, rather than just doing pulleys etc which you 're probably not going to notice much.

On my car I've got the pulley kit, flywheel, carbon prop and lighter wheels (although oem wheels already light). They're probably all worth a few wheel hp each. The prop is reckoned to be about 5 whp, not a lot but as I say combined with the others, makes a difference. More throttle response, better pickup. If you shorten the final drive as well, then you've got so much more push out of the turns. The standard ratios are too wide for an NA. I remember a Toyota engineer saying the ratios had been tuned for 'environmental performance'!!

Doing TSS last year, some of the speeds I was pulling on the straights weren't far behind the forced induction crowd. There's more you can do of course, filter, intake, header, exhaust, power blocks. It's possible to make an NA go quickly but to do it properly might cost you as much as forced induction!

  3. You can't tell much by the MAF reading, because a) you can change it and B) the intake will play a massive part.... even different filters make a difference.

Of course that figure is an amalgam of the system as a whole but it was measured before and after the header was changed, and a good improvement was recorded.

I don't know how good that figure is, you'd have to ask Adrian. But I do know he and the owner were pleased with the results.

  4. Stan, fingers crossed mine will be a little quieter, Tomie UEL header ordered, Milltek res cat back fitted yesterday, Cobra o/pipe and sports cat fitting next week, and Takeda air box going in today, then down to Adrian mid Feb for a tune.

    Just like Christmas

I was going to go turbo and all the bits that go with it, I saved all but £1500 and then my wife reminded me that her train and car parking ticket needed renewing, £3900 straight out of my fund :(.

Speaking to people with similar set-ups they are well impressed, :)

Interested to hear how you get on with the Tomei header (sorry Lauren - Manifold).

It was a toss up for me, Tomei or HKS. I went HKS because Adrian had mapped one already and seen good air. About 170g/sec. They seemed impressed so it would have been a punt go for another type. The Tomei might be better, time will tell...

As for UEL versus EL, I went for EL - slightly stronger top end, torque less important. The car is used primarily for competition plus I have shorter final drive so the priority is top end grunt :-)

Shame about the turbo plans. It does mount up when you add in all the bits n pieces :-) My wife does salary sacrifice to pay for her season ticket, something to think about.... ;-)

  5. Good article. Expecting a noisy motor this year then :)

HKS catless manifold and unresonated Milltek cat back system. The only saving grace in noise suppression terms is a Berk catted front pipe. Sound check at TSS round 1 will be interesting...

Will see if I can sound check it before :)

  7. I know that some of you may think it a waste of money... but a vehicle 'tracker' is a must-have for me...

I've got a Cobra unit in my car. I keep forgetting to tell them to put it into 'garage mode' when I take it up to Fensport/Toyo dealer for a bit of work - as soon as it's hoisted on their ramp I get a call asking if it's been knicked... very reassuring..

    Spec K

I've been looking around at Trackers and such like.

There's that many times in the year the car will be parked in unsecured hotel car parks (Premier Inn let's face it).

Agreed some form of vehicle tracking is a must.

Especially as my car might attract more attention this year than it has previously.... ;-)

Will check out Cobra... no false alarms or problems Keith? Apart from occasional bouts of amnesia :-)
