Mine are 35 offset front, 30 rear, but obviously half an inch narrower, so we're probably in a similar situation.

I would guess I'm probably not running as low as you either, due to having the HTAutos lip kit. If I run anything more than a mild drop, I hit everything, so I kept it at a sensible height (no more than 20mm lower than stock almost certainly).

Hmm, didn't think about the rubbing issue. I know plenty of US guys run 255's all around for Autocross and the like, and I can't find anything relating to rubbing at that size, but of course that doesn't mean it isn't an issue, perhaps just that I can't find it

I don't believe so. Price is here: https://www.camskill.co.uk/m61b0s22p135329/Michelin_Tyres_Car_Michelin_Pilot_Sport_4_PS4_-_255_35_R18_(94Y)_XL_TL_Fuel_Eff_%3A_C_Wet_Grip%3A_A_NoiseClass%3A_2_Noise%3A_71dB However, fitting is never a concern for myself as a good friend of mine is the manager of a local tyre place. Not so much of a friend that he can get me great deals on tyre prices, but he always fits tyres for free, or very little cost.

Another consideration here. @Riceburner informed me that I should be ok with a 255/35 on an 8.5 (something I've noticed is commonplace on the BMW forums), and the Michelin PS4's are only £130 each at that size, £20 per corner cheaper than 245/35's! Gotta be a good option right?

Oh...perhaps as good a reason as any to rethink that option then haha, thanks for letting me know. I found my economy slightly improve on runs after the turbo, but now I've ran it a while on my daily commute through town and a million roundabouts/traffic lights, I'm hanging around high 20's/low 30's at best. I'm not sure I can afford to lose 5mpg lol.

What was the wear/road noise like with them? For the price, they seem to be a great compromise, and do well in almost every tyre test.

Cheers Jeff. Only really considering a more track based tyre for the simple reason that they're designed to grip, and with 245's (maybe 255's) being my width limit on 8.5's, I feel like I'll need sticky rubber to effectively get the power down, which I'm struggling to do even in 4th sometimes at the moment.

Yeah you're right re: 888's. I'm not considering them tbh, just mentioned them so as to back up my point I read the AD08R's had some issues with rolling resistance etc. but then, at the same time, the V105's seem to get a lot of stick for road noise too, at least the reviews I've read, so I'm not too worried about that. Without going to an economy tyre, I think that's always gonna be a downside. PSS's seem like a good compromise, but their prices seem to have either frozen, or maybe even slightly risen since the release of the PS4's, which is rather annoying, and makes me consider them in the same way as the PS4's. I wonder if anyone has tried the Hankook S1 Evo 2's. They get great feedback from customers and reviewers, and ~£105 each for 245/35 seems like decent value. Edit: Found them for £105 each, not bad at all.

I had looked into AD08R's for some time. Still considering them tbh. The reason I ruled out PS4's wasn't due to their price being high so to speak, but moreso that their price is similar to that of more hardcore tyres like the AD08R's and R888's, both of which I can't help but feel would be better choices for the upcoming months of (hopefully) fair to good weather. I accept the PS4's are likely to be better all rounders than either of those, but then I also question whether they're actually £50 per tyre better than the Yoko's/Vred's or similar. At least getting 888's or AD08R's, I'm fairly confident they will outclass most of those tyres in dry grip, so at least they have a speciality.

I didn't want to start up a new thread for such a simple question. So I'll ask here. Been considering tyre options for a while now. Wanted to try out the PS4's, but with their limited sizes and price, I'm thinking not. Question is, do I go with a 235/40 or a 245/35 on an 8.5 wide wheel? Seems to be a great deal more choice, and a small cost saving, going with the 235/40, but I'm more swaying towards that little extra grip from the 245's, which I feel is maybe more important with the extra FI power. I can also get the much recommended V105's in 245/35 for a very reasonable price, so perhaps a good choice? Opinions and advice welcomed.
  12. I know I'm not Lauren, but you're in the fortunate position of being near both RRG Macclesfield, which is a main dealer (great for warranty work and plenty else) and Tuning Developments, who specialise in the tuning of these cars, and have plenty of experience with turbos, superchargers etc. Give @Mike@TD.co.uk a shout regarding the tuning, he'd be happy to help I'm sure.

I always think about the same story when talking about this kinda thing. A few years ago my cousin bought an "eBay special" chip (a resistor in a box) that promised 15% power or something on his Corsa diesel. He said it was significantly faster after he fitted it. My dad told him he could make it even faster, and would tweak it. My dad took this device off his car and gave it back to my cousin. He said it felt even better after my dad messed with it. Placebo effect is an amazing thing, and noise is the biggest cause of it. I'm not saying you're that stupid btw Just a funny story. I've had similar feelings when I've made mods, it's only after removing them did I realise how little, if any, differences were made.

We're talking 5hp peak here right? Peak is at near redline. How often do you drive at redline to where you would notice it? You notice 5hp increases if it raises the entire curve by 5hp, I'd defend you there, but 5hp peak? That's the change of a panel filter on a stock car, and I sure as hell didn't notice that.

    The Tyre Thread

Your question was about tyre sizes, not sidewalls. If you wanted to ask a question about sidewalls, you'd have asked "Will the sidewall be too large on a 245/40?", or "Will the car drive poorly on 245/40?". You didn't. You asked a general question about tyres and I gave you a general concern. Lauren answered your question in the way you "wanted" because her first consideration when answering questions is usually "How will this issue effect how the car drives?". I don't have that knowledge as I've not driven any car other than my own in anger, and I'm not gonna guess just to be helpful, but I wanted to be helpful. I know that one reason people stick to certain tyre sizes in general, is to keep speedo readings fairly accurate. Ok, that's not a concern to you, but my name is Ross, not mystic Meg, so there's no way for me to know that. Also, I'll never take offence to anything you say to or about me, don't flatter yourself

Here's a tip. Rather than being a dick when someone gives you an answer you weren't interested in, maybe be a little more concise when you ask the fucking question. Your question didn't mention you were "concerned about size of sidewall", and my answer didn't mention that as I have no experience of that issue, I just gave you information perfectly relevant to your question that I could find to help you out. Remind me not to bother wasting my time on you again.

Comparing to stock sizes, that tyre will under-read the speedo by almost 6%, that's quite significant. I don't know what sizes you have currently, but I'm assuming 255/35. Your current setup under-reads the speedo by almost 3%, and going to 245/40 will make it a further 3% worse, not fix it. Use this for reference http://www.willtheyfit.com/index.php?width=255&aspect=35&diameter=18&wheelwidth=9.5&offset=40&width2=245&aspect2=40&wheel_size=18&wheel_width=9-5&offset2=40 Going to a 245/35 will correct your speedo error by a little over 1%, which takes it closer to stock. Might be worth looking at other tyres in the correct size rather than the right tyre in the wrong size.

That's gonna throw your speedo off by some way. I'm having the same problem currently, as I want PS4's in that size. I'm either gonna go 235/40s or 245/35 AD08R's or something.

36k on mine atm. Were an advisory on the MOT, but still a few thousand miles of life in them apparently.

Yeah, that would be perfect. Just under 1.5 hours for me, which is perfectly reasonable. I normally wouldn't mind travelling 2.5 hours each way, but Feb has been an expensive month, and that's literally a tank of fuel by itself.

If you were meeting a little closer towards Oxford I'd have made the journey across. MK is 2.5 hours for me.

    TRD Spoiler

Official one has a drill template, but I think 90% of people just stick it on. But for the price difference, it's not a huge problem.

Same for most of the reps, and I don't know of anyone who's had one fly off. All of the air flow will be over the top of the spoiler, effectively pushing it into the boot anyway, rather than air going underneath like on a high level wing, so it's not something I'd be especially concerned about.

Hmm. I'm gonna drop the guy a message and see if he'll paint them, and if so, for what price. I just have a feeling that, if I buy one unpainted, it would just stay on my bedroom floor for months.
