  1. It's not just members binning there car but there have been plenty of sighting from members of other 86s crashing and been comment on or reported on Facebook etc. but no, no hard facts persay but its a common assumption to why prices may go have gone up.

Most of ours are on track days though so they don't count surely

Anyway - its swings and roundabouts - on the one hand premiums are rising. On the other, our cars are becoming rarer by the day ;-)

  2. Just for your notes, the stock car (excepting the Primo which around two people bought) has everything this does including cruise control etc as standard. The only additions in the new car are steering wheel controls and of course the changes to the dash display.

Are you sure about that? I've never met the other one... :-D

He's had it since release, no other owners

Ah - apologies - confusing it with another one...

  4. That's great news. Any insight into what happened/caused the failure?

I'd also say keep it. I suppose in the end you don't know the history of the car. A previous owner might have run it low on oil for example. Now you have a brand new motor you can look after it...

  5. I initially thought I wanted one as a daily, to replace my excellent Fiat Panda Cross.

However, the engine & transmission choices are seriously flawed IMO & the price point is about £3k too high.

Why no manual 1.2 4WD with decent tyres?!?!

More of a fashion statement than a vehicle with any real purpose.

Now THAT's cool. When I grew up in the depths of Yorkshire, loads of people had the original Panda 4x4. Unbeatable for a cheap workhorse.

I quite like the Dacia Duster too. France is full of them - with good reason.

When it comes to vans/SUVs/4x4s I want something I'm happy filling full of muddy shoes and Bikes.

That said - my Berlingo is fine hacking through the alpine snow on skiing duty. Snow tyres trump 4 wheel drive for the most part.

  6. Why is the rear visibility so awful on so many modern cars? All that metal in the rear three quarters doesn't do much for the looks in any case. Just put some more glass in there!

One of the points of having an SUV is the elevated driving position and great view. These coupe/SUV mash ups seem to offer the worst of all worlds. (See also Range Rover Evoque etc etc)

  7. Nice car history. You're one of the few owners for whom the '86 will be a step up in plushness and practicality :-)

You've made the best mod already. The Primacies are awful. Mine drives better on the winter rubber even though I'm running that on 16' wheels ;-)

When it comes to summer you might want to consider putting something else on and saving the Primacies for the next owner :-)

As for feeling slow - it's mainly the lack of torque in the midrange. That can be fixed with a few cheap(ish) mods and a remap...

  8. Sorry @dom2497 not wanting to scare you  I'm sure you know the true history of the car and as nothing was said on here about it everybody just speculated.

Indeed I know all the history and not just with my car. I really want to avoid people's conjecture which I have seen many times on car forums, I expect you can imagine what it's like when I used to own a RX7!

At least it wasn't an RX8. They seem to go through engines like other cars do headlamp bulbs :-). Still love the rotaries though...

Whatever the history of your car (and frankly engines going pop in 86s doesn't seem particularly linked to extreme tuning based on other threads) I will make the observation that your car looks lovely. Great wheels, great stance and love the stripes.

    Hope you enjoy it.

  9. I don't blame the dealer - but I think Toyota could be more accommodating.

Let's face it it's a gamble to pay for extensive rebuild work at main dealer rates on the offchance Toyota might cough up. If the car were out of warranty you'd take it somewhere cheaper...

It puts all the risk on the owner, not to mention trusting Toyota to be unbiased in their diagnosis.

  10. Hmmm. Things have changed.

Just had a call from Steven Eagell Toyota. Toyota is requiring return of failed parts for inspection before they'll honour warranty. Steven Eagell will repair at my expense and reimburse if proven Toyota fault.

    Not very happy.

I think I'd be calling Toyota to find out on what grounds. Is it the mods that are the issue?

  11. Mine certainly uses oil - not excessively - but needs keeping an eye on.

It's not encouraging - but we've got the warranty I suppose!

I don't recall any other car I've had developing a tendency for the engine to go pop within three or four years :-(

If anything I bet these cars get maintained pretty religiously on average - enthusiasts check oil etc... You're average company BMW rarely gets it's bonnet lifted between services...
