  1. I think it was the AE82 I was thinking of - at least it got the lovely twin-cam...

     

    I remember thinking how cool it was that Toyota could sell you the same engine in FWD, RWD and even mid engined configurations at that time. I think I had a brochure with all of them in! I can't think of another manufacturer doing that...

     

    As for the Golf - Mk1 and 2 are rightly legends, but the Mk3 needs a decent burial, and the Mk4 was lovely if you wanted a baby Mercedes, but it was no hot hatch... I always fancied a Corrado though...

     

    As for the 205. Pretty, but all the structural integrity of a crisp packet!

    So can anyone who's tried both the PS4s and the v105s comment on how the Michelins are better than the Yokos? I'm prepared to believe it, but I'm so happy with the Yokohamas I can't really see I'd want more wet or dry grip, or indeed progression which is just right. Albeit I'm running slightly wider tyres than stock on 18x8s so I have higher grip than normal...

     

     

    I have found on certain cars that Michelin are good at balancing grip and wear rate - so they do sometimes pay for themselves that way, but I guess to early to tell for the PS4s

     

    Comparison with the Primacies seems a bit futile as my Kumho snow tyres on 16x7 wheels are better than those ;-/

  3. Nice - a special edition worthy of the name. I wouldn't do much cosmetically if I were you as these Look fantastic out of the box.

     

    I said I wouldn't mod mine either but I have coilovers, wheels, manifold and remap and all were well worth the cash - the car drives better than stock...

     

    But you have nice wheels already so that's covered...

    As for handling, the eighties hot corollas and the fwd Celicas have been okay have they not?

     

    Still - if they can beat the Fiesta I'll be impressed. That's an absolute hoot to drive, albeit pretty awful in every other respect.

  5. I don't doubt it... was more a thought experiment... it's going to be a long time til this sort of thing can compete with five grand bolt on FI kits.

     

    But still I wonder why it's still the preserve of the £100k plus cars like you say... The daft thing being that they don't really need it - fuel economy or car tax is hardly an issue if you have a Ferrari...

    Great stuff. Toyota aren't just about RWD sports cars - the FWD cars were pretty good back in the day too.

     

     

    As someone who VERY nearly bought a Fiesta ST instead of the GT86 this is an interesting development...

     

    Plus it means the Riceburner and his colleagues finally have something else to sell to the under-sixties

  7. Not sure I like the shiny black plastic around the radio. The new wheel and instruments are an improvement though...

     

    I wish they'd drop the analogue speedo though. Positioned as it is its pointless - I don't think I've looked at mine once in 18 months of ownership...

  8. Fair point. I suppose it'd be easy enough to at least keep the extra weight low...

     

    I wonder what battery capacity you'd need? Probably wouldn't work in a track scenario but on the road you're rarely using the full 200bhp as it is, so a mild boost would go further...

  9. Just idly thinking... but given the popularity of super/turbocharging our cars for more poke, but given that this is 2017 I'm wondering if it's technically feasible to fit some sort of aftermarket hybrid setup to an 86?

     

    A lot of high end sports cars now are using electric power to boost performance. An interesting thought... don't know if anyone's tried it with similar vehicles

  10. Its quite a bit more expensive though isnt it? The RF in comparison to the standard soft top.

    I really like the ND MX5, never test drove one but have sat in one, the simple single handed opening soft top is really trick, I see no need for the RF unless you like the looks and a bit more refinement with the roof up. For me it would be the only realistic option to replace my 86 with should i want to get rid.

     

    Me too - I think if I didn't need the back seats I'd have bought an MX5. Great little cars. Never seen the point of the complicated metal roofed ones though. Simple car needs a simple roof. Newest ones really capture the spirit of the early cars for me...

  11. I think the big dealer groups are more powerful than the distributors, yes. It's the only explanation for some of the crap.

     

    We have decent Ford, Toyota, BMW, Jag and Peugeot dealers locally. All small chains or family run. Coincidence? No - don't think so.

     

    All the garages that have lied or provided terrible service to me have been large groups. Lesson learned.

    I don't think it's brand specific. I've had great and terrible experience across all brands.

     

     

    What is curious though, is that I have always found that the manufacturers are little helps if you escalate. Seems odd given that you'd think they'd care, but they give the impression of having little influence.

     

    So now I just stick with dealers I trust locally. The brand is now secondary sadly.

  13. If your head unit supports hands free calls, you'll interact with the head unit which is legal... unless it distracts you of course 

     

    I suppose that's partly why this legislation is silly. A lot of in car interfaces are so complex now as to be distracting. Touch screens are intrinsically a bad idea in a car. For example to change temperature with conventional dials you reach for a knob that feels the right shape and often don't have to look. Touch screens mean eyes off road. Always.

     

    But they can hardly ban using your car whilst driving - hence this rather silly legal situation.

     

    If I had my way there'd be much tougher standards on in car UI design...

     

    GT86 better than most due to being so dated. The touch screen doesn't do much!
