Gearbox Selector shaft removal

Recommended Posts

I wanted to remove and strip my Gearbox, however when browsing the manuals I have, I discovered there is nothing on actually removing the gearbox or stripping it of its ancillaries.

There are guides on how to remove the gearstick on YouTube, look up "Short shifter FRS BRZ", and there is an online guide to clutch replacement on a very popular American FT86 site. That guide covers gearbox removal.

Once you have your gearbox on the floor you will need to unclip the clutch release mechanism and remove the selector shaft mechanism before stripping or replacing the gearbox with a service recon unit. The large ali casting that the gearstick bolts two is held onto the gearbox with two swivel pins which simply turn through 90 degrees and pull out. The selector shaft itself is a little different..

As you can see, the shaft is attached via a knuckle which is wrapped in a tin ring. To remove the shaft, simply lever the ring gently forward, swapping sides as you go until it pops off. The pin will be exposed now, and needs to be lifted up and out of the hole. I used a small allen key to lever the pin up enough to grab it with a pair of pliers.

Once apart, you will see this..

As already mentioned, this is a must if you want to strip your gearbox or are replacing it, as the new one will probably not have this shaft attached?
