    Ordered for 1st September

Hello everyone, a few weeks ago I took the plunge and ordered my GT86, standard car with sat nav in pearlescent white. Whilst my kids were growing up I always had "practical" cars if you know what I mean. Well they are all grown up now so time for a bit of fun. Wish I could fast forward to 1st September. I suppose you can call me a rusty petrol head. Any suggestions as to what small (but essential) modifications I should attend to bearing in mind a limited budget? Mike
  10. Hi All, After reading through the supplied guide I decided to follow it but I did do a few things differently, I will also go in to a bit more detail for those that are considering the OEM Audio+ kit (which despite a few issues fits very well) I believe that my issues were perhaps due to me not providing as much info as I should have and the fact they were pushing to get the kit to me before Christmas. Once I get my studio mic I will record some good quality audio from the car so that you can get a feel to how crisp it sounds. I will add you can achieve a better install for the money with aftermarket components. However if you want something that fits superbly well in to the factory headunit with a loom already made up, this is probably a kit you should consider... That said, it doesn't sound bad and definitely packs a punch. The Guide Step 1 First off you want to do the following: 1. Unlock both doors 2. Open the boot 3. lift the bonnet up This is because you are going to disconnect the battery, if you don't do this you are sure to blow a few fuses along the way and you will curse yourself when sods law you don't have any spares in your garage So disconnect the wires from the negative terminal, tuck them to the right of the battery so they don't pop back up and re-attach themselves.. Something they will want to do after being on the terminal for so long. Step 2 Next you want to head over to either your driver or passenger seat and remove both the headunit surround and the headunit itself.. To do this get a flathead screwdriver and a thin microfibre clock of some kitchen paper will do also (to prevent any unwanted scratches) If you are a rebel, feel free to do without. The below image shows where to place the flathead screddriver, there will be a small hole on the right side of the surround begin prising it off from here. For reference here is where the clips are situated on the surround Once this is off you will need to remove the four 10mm Hex nuts holding the headunit in place, shown below in the image Disconnect the following cables, you may want to reference this image later when connecting it all back up, though it shouldn't be a major issue! Step 3 Next you will need to remove the drivers side trim pieces at the front (In the majority of aftermarket installs you would be doing this for both sides to prevent alternator whine, this loom will only run up one side) Place your hand roughly where mine is in the image and pull straight up. I wouldn't be too worried about snapping it, it will take some pulling and is fairly flexible. Work along until it is off. Next you will need to remove the trim piece around the bonnet catch, there is one pop rivet and two green panel clips holding this on, Undo the pop rivet shown in the image. Then get your fingers under the panel next to the door seal and push it out and towards the pedals Note: Check both green clips come off of the chassis, if one is left on, remove it with either a clip removal tool or a flathead screwdriver(using a microfiber again) Step 4 Getting there... now on to the rear, we need to remove the seat and the rear trim piece First loosen the door seal around the back trim Next up there is a 10mm hex Nut butting in to an L bracket holding the seat in place, remove this With one hand push down on the back of the seat, with your other hand grab the L bracket and pull up, this will unhinge the seat How there is one pop rivet which was hidden by the seat you will see which is shown below, remove this. Drop the rear seats down, you will see two pop rivets, remove these also. That's all the pop rivets fixing the rear trim in place, unfortunately there are a fair few panel clips The way I removed this panel, on the left side of the panel where the door seal was there will be a gap along this edge, begin pulling here. Pull at the lower locations shown here also Are you still struggling? Lets hope not, if you are, here is an image below for reference of where the clips are situated on the panel... Ok we are going a bit too quick, by now around an hour should have passed if it's your first time removing these pieces, if not they tend to come off a little easier and you can do this in around 30 mins when you get good at it Now go grab yourself a cup of tea and feel please that you got this far hopefully with no broken clips... Step 5 Now we have all the trim pieces out we can start with the small amount of chassis modification that needs to be done There will be two speed nuts, attached to the Subwoofer enclosure, get these off as we need to slip these on to some brackets.. Note: You will end up with two pop rivets left over after the install, this is where they have come from! The first bracket can be found where the bottom pop rivet came out of that was holding the rear trim piece in place, there will be two holes on this and a bend on the bracket. Grab a pair of needle nosed pliers and bend it so that it is relatively straight. Don't worry about scratching it, you won't see it and honestly the speed nut will scratch it anyway.... Attach Speed nut to the bracket Now in the boot there will be a pop rivet directly inside, next to the rubber seal, pop it off, pull back the carpet around the hole and there will be a bracket. Place the speed nut on here It's important to place the correct speed nut on the correct bracket, the one on the allen bolt goes on to the bracket next to the rubber seal... Step 6 Now we need to route the main loom, infact the only loom, and this is where my guide will differ. OEM + say to put the trim back after routing the cable, we won't be doing this until after we have got the wire through the grommet as it's a tight fit and will just waste your time when you realise you don't have enough loom at the bulkhead right? Correct One end of the loom will have 3 multiple pinned connectors.. From memory I believe they were a 6 pin, 10 pin and a 12 pin. This is irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, unless you have a fetish for even numbers on electrical connectors.... We will start with the end with the most connectors rub it behind the seatbelts and in to the boot leaving roughly as much as i have, for those with the normal OEM+ Install you just need to leave enough loom to get behind the enclosure. For those with the Active suspension loom it will split, the Amplifier is mounted on the subwoofer enclosure however the DSP Amplifier will be placed on the left side of the boot (We will get to this later) You will have an earth wire on the subwoofer loom (yellow shrink skin over the crimp terminal). Just beflow the rear quarter window is a gold connector, this is your earth. Undo this 10mm hex nut and place the earth wire on to of the earth wires already there. Now that is done we can run the cable through the cable tunnel, there is a which oblong tube* (Do these even exist ) It has 3 white clips running along it, unclip this and fold it back, the carpet is stapled to it. Now I will apologise here, i'm missing a picture for you, I forgot one (doh)... Within this tunnel there are more clips, undo these and tuck the loom in to this and clip it back up. It will go in from the boot like this And come out in the drivers footwell like this (run it to where I have annotated with red circle) Next up OEM+ say to cable tie the loom to the grey cable shown below, this is located above the pedals. I would honestly leave it loose for now Step 7 This part is probably the trickiest part of the install, they don't go in to enough detail on how to successfully get through the grommet, luckily this one isn't tricky if you know how to do it! Above the pedals to the right will be this grommet (use a torch) there is a nipple on the other side that when cut will make a convenient hole (presumably there for the JBL OEM install) the hole is unfortunately on the top side of the grommet, i've marked roughly where it is below. Now that you know where is is , head out to the bonnet and adjacent to the Master Brake Cylinder you will see the grommet with a convenient nipple on it, cut the tip with a stanley knife, the guide says to cut it all off, just put a slice half way through. This will be fine. This is now the tricky bit, we need to get the power cables through this grommet, there is a 14 Gauge and a 12 Gauge cable so luckily not all that thick. Get a metal rod (which is not too thick and can bend but not too thin so that it bends when forge is on it. Get some electrical wire around 40cm in length each. Slice the elctrical wire and take one wire out of it. Tape this and the metal rod together with electrical tape. Now push the metal rob through the grommet. It should go through easily, if its not, wiggle it until it slides through freely. I can assure you there is already a hole there for it so no need to force it! If you force it you may slice one of the electrical wires already running through it. Once it's through pull it through to the other side. Now remove the metal rod and tape the power cables from the loom to the electrical wire. Go back to the bonnet side and pull it through. (I've probably saved you around an hour of crying trying to get it through Step 8 Now that is all done, you need to route the loom up above the pedals and in to the headunit bay. I honestly can't get pictures of where to route these, but directly to the right if you look in the hole where the headunit came out of you should be able to see the pedals. It's best to get another pair of hands to grab the loom as you feed it up. Once that's done, conenct up the OEM+ loom to the OEM loom as shown below Next plug the OEM+ Loom in to the Headunit and also the other OEM loom connectors which are sitting around (Should be 3 of these) Once done it should look something like this.. Well done, now put the headunit back in! and clip the trim back on! Guide to be continued....
  11. I’ve been on the hunt for a spoiler / wing for the last few months and been looking around. Part of me wanted something small, effective and discrete. And other parts of me wanted to go all out and hang a massive carbon wing off the back of it. Knowing I didn’t have 400-500bhp to warrant a massive wing. I decided to go somewhere in the middle. And try find a high rise spoiler to sit off the boot lid but one that wasn’t to big. I’d always had my eye on the Aero spoiler but part of me thinks once they come down in price it won’t be so special and they’ll be common. And the easy option to just bolt it on. I felt anything that was nice or easy was just being done. The TRD ducktail seems to be a common one because its easy to fit, solves the solution to the holes in the spoiler and cheaper to get painted. There were a couple of other options but nothing really caught my eye. They all had an element I didn’t like, or the mounts looks bulky and horrible. Or the cost of getting them prepped and painted was ridiculous. Whilst looking around on ebay a GTR R35 spoiler came up and got me thinking. Knowing it probably wouldn’t fit I didn’t get too excited but I knew this was the sort of spoiler and height that I wanted. Fensport actually had a GT86 specific GTR style wing. But the mounts were quite bulky and it was too rounded for my liking. The GTR wing looks very well built and angular. Which works very well. So I decided i’d buy the GTR Spoiler. The guy on ebay took £80 including shipping for a carbon wrapped 2010 R35 Spoiler. So I took the plunge and went for it. It arrived and I set out working out how to fit it. It sat on the boot lid perfectly. It lined up with the car perfectly. But the mount didn’t sit flush on the boot lid, as expected. The first bit of the mount sat flush but the GT86 boot lid curves downwards towards the edge and front. So decided I would need to make some custom brackets to fit it. First up was to make a Fibreglass Mould of the boot lid…. Taped up the boot lid so that I could remove the mould and it didn’t stick to the paint work… Then time to apply the fibreglass resin and glass cloth…. To get a rough idea of the size and shape I made some styrofoam templates to get a rough idea. Obviously one issue that needed to be resolved was the holes in the front of the boot lid which were used to hold the original stock spoiler on. From the inside I applied a layer of fibreglass to block the hole up. Then added filler of this and smoothed it all out. Once dry I then rubbed it all down and smoothed it over. At this point I had a boot with no holes, two fibreglass moulds, a very dusty bedroom and a car without a boot. Next up I placed the fibreglass moulds onto the boot lid and taped them down so they were in place. Added some insulation tape over the whole lot and lined the spoiler up in its perfect position to where it needed to sit on the boot lid. By adding the insulation tape it allowed me to press the spoiler down and create a mark on it ready for drilling. The spoiler has bolts built in to it which made it easier to line up and lock the spoiler in place. Concentrating on just one bolt for now I removed the other two. Marked the position this bolt needed to go and then drilled through the fibreglass and boot lid. With the spoiler now lined up on the boot lid and in position with the nut and bolt in the correction location it was time to stick the fibreglass to the GTR mount. Bolted it up tight and left it to dry. Filled in the gaps with styrofoam to give the fibre glass some support and a little more shape. Once all was dry unbolted the spoiler from the boot lid and removed the mounts from the top part of the GTR spoiler. The GTR spoiler is in 3 parts. The two side mounts and the top edge. Which can be taken apart. I then cut off the excess fibreglass to the rough shape of the existing mount. Filled all gaps and smoothed with Body Filler. Next up was hours and hours of smoothing, sanding, filling, rubbing, priming, filling and more sanding. Some sanding done with an electric sander. Sand paper and wet and dry. It was difficult to get both mounts perfect and identical whilst keeping a perfect shape and smooth. At this point I drilled through the entire mount and added the bolts back in to all 3 locations. With extended bolts. This works well as its then using the original mount as the mounting point and not relying on my new fibreglass mount. My fibre glass mount almost becomes a sandwiched bit between the bootlid and original spoiler mount. After lots of sanding. lots of concentration, lots of dust and patience I finally had something which looks like it would be acceptable to fit to my car! Also added in a single cable to make it easy to thread the brake light cable through the mount. Bit more sanding for good luck.. Next up gave the mounts a good thick spray of filler primer. This showed up all the imperfections and indents and small marks. So more filling, sanding smoothing and dusty bedroom. At all times test fitting it on the boot lid to ensure it still fitted and the shape of the mount was correct. Next up I made the commitment and drilled the other two holes in the boot lid. Added in the bolts, put the spoiler back together and for the first time sat the spoiler with the new mounts on the boot lid.. And it fits! Almost perfect! Couple of 1mm gaps! So bit more sanding, little filler and a wet and dry sand. Also in this time I had the boot lid sent off to the body shop to have a full sand fill and respray to ensure the holes were filled. paint was brand new and looked amazing. Next up you have to drop the drill with your sharpest steel drill piece onto your new full can of primer spray paint. So that it immediately starts pissing out primer all over the place which you try and grab and get outside asap, but fail. For now I’ve had to wrap the Spoiler as i’ve not had a chance to get it into the body shop for respray and haven't yet added the centre mount to it. Got it fitted onto the car again and wired in the brake light. Done this by removing the old brake light cable and extending it to the original GTR brake light. This means i’ll be able to get rid of the after thought 3rd brake light on the rear parcel shelf. It probably took me around 50 hours to get this on the car. it was 3 solid weekends and a few nights. Hours of sanding, hours of filling and hours of waiting for things to dry. Sore fingers, spray paint everywhere, cut fingers and some stressful / ‘Oh Bugger’ moments. But obviously like everything the first one would always be hardest. I’ve not driven it much since having it fitted or hard enough to notice a difference. It does feel a bit more planted on the back and can actually feel a slightly different steering feel. Not sure how much it really says but without the centre mount the middle flexes a fair bit. Looking in the rear view mirror at higher speeds the spoiler is actually flexing in the centre. I reference it with the rear brake light and it probably drops around 10 - 15mm once getting up to speed. So I believe it is actually generating some downforce. Being off a genuine GTR they've’ probably done some research into it having some aero benefits. Probably not enough to notice. But I done this mod more for looks and the appearance. I’ll add the centre mount in soon and see how that changes things. But next up is to just extend the centre mount a few mm to make it fit better. This will stop the spoile flexing in the centre and stop some ressination you can hear under low RPM high engine load accelerations. For those of you who are super worried about weights and adding weight you'll be surprised to know the stock GTR spoiler is very well built and only weighs 3kg. The stock spoiler weighs in at 1.8kg. The GTR spoiler with my custom brackets brake light and bolts is 3kg. I can also remove the brake light from the back of the car. So for the added looks, better brake light and maybe extra downforce I don't mind adding 1kg. Will also be getting it all sprayed in a High Gloss Black to match my wheels and TRD accents. I might make it red in due course if I feel the black is a little too outgoing and in your face. Total cost to do this was around £350 £80 for the spoiler (From ebay) £20 for the Brake Light (From and GTR Owners Club member) £200 in respray / smoothing of the boot lid. (Local body shop) £50 in filler, sandpaper and bits etc.

    Introduction from another newbie

Hi all, Just wanted to say a hi to all the people I met at the GT86 Owners Day held at Oulton Park on Thursday. Thanks for the big welcome, and a special mention to the lovely Lauren for the passenger laps towards the end of the day Also wanted to say hi to all of you I didn't meet then but hope to meet at some of the meets in the near future. My time is split between Worcestershire and Hertfordshire so if there is anything happening within a good drive of either location I would love to hear about them! Thanks for listening folks x
  16. Well at long last and after some painting issues in Japan my Intec lights arrived. The build quality is fantastic, some pictures below. I will most likely fit these on the weekend and put some fitter pictures up at various angles as they seem a bit marmite to most of you. I think it's the reason I like them!
  17. Going to post my TSS Runs here throughout the rounds, I've only watched two of the runs back so far and can immediately see how shit I am. Criticism and advice welcome, so far what I can see is I'm braking too early still (Silly habit of mine) and braking for no reason on some of the corners. Also too wide on them, had I watched these back at lunch I probably could of shaved some good time off if I thought about it sensibly Round 1 - Blyton Park Run 1 - 1:23.18 Run 2 - 1:22.75

    Helmet Pimping!

had to be done really, helmet pimping!
  19. I woke up this morning looking at the weather, it was sunny outside with a few black clouds, I didn't know whether to crack on with the detail today or leave it until next weekend. Metcheck said it was currently raining and BBC Weather said it was going to rain until 3pm. Still unsure at about 10:30 I gathered up my bits to begin tackling this, my plan was initially to wash the car down, Iron-X and clay it ready for polishing. As it happened it didn't rain at 3pm and the BBC forcast said it was going to be dry for the rest of the afternoon/evening so I figured i'd carry on with the polishing. Items used: - 4 New Microfibre cloths - Karcher pressure washer - DAS-6 PRO Dual Action Polisher - Menzerna PF2300 - Menzerna SF4500 - Polishing Pad - Finishing Pad - PH Neutral Snow Foam - The remains of my AG Shampoo - Wash Mitt - 2 Buckets - Gtechniq C1 - Gtechniq G4 - Gtechniq G1 - Gtechniq G2 My first step was to snow foam the car to remove any larger bits of grit etc I then washed it off with the pressure washer lance after i'd left it for 10mins ish I then washed the car using two buckets, rinsing each panel at a time I then Applied Iron-X to the paintwork doing a few panels at a time (This stuff stinks I was gagging on it, but it works!) Rinsed Iron-X off after 3-5 minutes of curing Snow Foamed again and rinsed Back on the driveway to begin claying the entire car Car was then pretty much ready to begin the polishing... I used Menzerna PF2300 on panels that had some swirls, mainly the bonnet, roof, rear quarters and SF4500 over the all the panels afterwards. This is where I have got to, I need to wipe down with Alcohol tomorrow and apply Gtechniq C1 then prep the windows up to be done. Will put pictures up tomorrow of the finished product and some in between bits. Haven't taken a lot though as I needed to get it done! Update: This morning up at 8am, dried the car, wiped all panels down with Gtechniq Panel Wipe Polished front & read windows with G4 Applied Gtechniq G1 to windows (at this point it started drizzling during curing and i got a bit mad, but it worked) Left to cure for 15 minutes and applied G2 to remove residue from the G1 Applied C1 to all panels and shot off to the Grass hopper meet, so Images are Post grasshopper meet.
  20. So I phoned my insurers (Admiral) and the inevitable has happened, they don't insure anyone with superchargers or any FI. So why the f*ck is it listed on your site? tools. So i compared the market, I do this not for the best deal but to get average prices. Bet came back £1306 22, 23 in feb with 4 years NCB in an area that is regrettably getting a worse crime rate by the day. I phones Sky and Luke managed to get a quote of £1280, reasonable? I'm currently paying £780 all mods declared with admiral, I'm not sure how much it would generally up the price. I assume its a fair hike due to my age and the shitty area.
  21. So 9th Feb was my first time at Brands Hatch (going round the track), this was unfortunately the Indy circuit. I'd of liked to have done the GP circuit but I guess that just gives me a good excuse to go back there? The day was organised by RMA Trackdays, which is ran by Graham and Annalese. Both very nice, Graham rather straight to the point. The briefing wasn't a pain, RMA is focused on those with track experience mainly (At this point i'm shitting it), I then get told we can overtake on either side, I think i then genuinely laid one... They are a little more expensive than other organisers but they are favoured by many due to their relaxed rules on the day. The increased costs is due to him favouring quiter track days to busy ones. I agree, it was much better and hopefully we can work on some discounts throughout the year for us guys First few laps were a bit daunting, there were a lot of Ginetta's there and even an Arial Atom. But I soon got used to it and it was a great day out. it was wet until around 11pm at which point it was practically dry. The below videos are of my car going around Brands, albeit not to perfection, it's quite a lot more difficult to Snetterton or Bedford which I had previously done due to the gradients being put in to the mix. I will update this thread with all my videos eventually.
  22. Post all your pic and videos here! What an awesome day it was, and good of Adrian to pop along and offer his advice on our shoddy driving! I will sort my videos out shortly. P.S Keith, I still have your memory card... It recorded fine, do you want it back or can I persuade you with a bottle of wine or two for it?
  23. I fitted my dash cam this evening, 10 minute job! Not the best test as it's dark, first impressions is the microphone quality is rather dire by the sounds of it, but I must admit this is straight out of the box and you can adjust the configuration on the PC, so my recordings from snetterton should be 10 times better both Audio and Video wise... I have set it to 1080p and the highest bitrate available, 12Mb/s i think it was off the top of my head. The below video is 720p at 4Mb/s You can also attach an external mic, i think the reason the inside mic is bad is due to it being a small unit it is against the casing and vibrates a lot as it's fixed to the window. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHksDzOWP7c&feature=youtu.be

Hello, new gt86 member from spain

Hello all, A new member saying hello with a white gt86. Live in spain and Belgium. Love our car and even more when drifting ;-) Especially interested in turbo or supercharger for the gt86. At the moment I have the complete Milltek exhaust (both resonated as non resonated) and deleted the noise generator. Also bought the injen ses exhaust from fensport, but that was too loud and had a lot of drone. Look forward to learning some new things from our car. Greets, Nickson
