Update incase anyone else comes up against this.
I've cracked it by using a iDatalink Maestro SW, did have to ship from the US, but from amazon.com it's still quite reasonable.
    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00J4W10XG
Pretty straightforward to wire up. I used the Connects2 harness and just cut the plug off that would be for their SWC interface.
Anyway, works like a charm and is even re-programmable, should you want volume up to map to volume down 😂

I tried it with it back in, and rotating it a bit so it wouldn’t touch and I did feel the throttle response was slightly better so left it in. However I will say the difference wasn’t much to get excited about - not talking night and day here it was fractional at best.

Didn't have a great follow up customer experience with Mike & TD after getting a manifold & tune done. Didn't want to vent as an internet forum not really a graceful place for it but since people are speaking up please allow me to add for completeness sake.
Disbelief on his part that anything could be wrong with the work they'd done and an unwillingness to look at the car again followed by an email or two before no reply. Finally got a reply out the blue to say I could bring it in by which time I'd washed my hands of them.
I just started to write an email to them to ask for the branch resonator back I now assume (thanks W300) they threw away after fitting the manifold but from the way this thread reads I'll perhaps not waste my energy.
All our performance at work wavers at times it's natural. It was the stubbornness to accept so afterwards that annoyed me. Or at least a ready willingness to help resolve/understand the problem.
    Green customer wrong mmkay.

@Feemono & anyone else interested, At the recent Donington trackday I noticed two cars didn't have the little intake resonator despite having an otherwise stock intake. However what both cars did have was the Tuning Developments exhaust manifold, I therefore suspect that TD remove this as part of there upgrade package, most likely so it doesn't get mellted by the hot exhaust.

I need it personally as I ferry my little one to football matches and events all the time and am watching him on the ground working hard. Once we finish , I want the car to be pre heated. Electric seats to be on full blast. Same with an early morning departure to work..
BMW charge for the privilege and so do many others. Am happy to pay but want it factory set up and having a sim inside so it works everywhere , not just on my drive.

Finally got round to doing lol

Found some info about the coating here: https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/evo-engine-turbo-drivetrain/438430-ported-throttle-body-plate-sealant-2.html

This is what is left of “goop” on the back of the throttle body which my initial “cleaning” missed. Looks like it was brushed on. Similar moly paste is £60 a tin, so I went with the spray on moly dry lube by CRC which ended up being quite a thin layer despite a few coats

    Masked up

Sprayed on front and back, I opened the valve to spray on the circumference of it too

Cured for three hours and then lightly buffed

Reconnected the battery, and did the relearn procedure as before.

Results: the Rev hang has gone when shifting gears so I’m happy.

But I still feel like the engine braking isn’t immediate when I let off the throttle, it very smoothly transitions to engine braking - I don’t know if that’s normal so I might have to book a test drive of another 86 I could be used to my KTM single cylinder strong ass engine braking tho lol

Lesson 1: don’t clean your throttle body with carb cleaner. I think there’s actually a couple of brands who make proper throttle body cleaning spray which don’t remove the molybdenum coating.

I reckon a quick wipe with a dry rag would’ve removed the tiny bit of dirt that had accumulated at the bottom of the valve. And that’s lesson 2: don’t go straight for the big guns when cleaning, use the least aggressive method first

I had the engine/gearbox mounts changed today at Abbey Motorsport.  The bag labels say TRD, but the parts are stamped Subaru, so I guess they are identical to the STi parts.
The new mounts are a whole world of difference in terms of handling.  The chassis feels tight and precise, there is no jerkiness on pull-away and the whole car just feels more stable and better planted.  This is what was needed to complement the Bilsteins.  There is no more gearbox noise than before.  It was a very worthwhile upgrade for the cost.

Yup. It also makes the gearbox feel nicer I found - feels like I am pushing the gear lever against more solid resistance, less energy from my arm being "wasted" as it were. Small but noticeable improvement

Some specifics around gearbox from my link above , Source: Toyota US pressroom.

For Manual Transmission (MT), the shape of the shift lever is optimized for smooth, enjoyable shifting, whether you’re moving from 2nd to 3rd or downshifting from 5th to 4th. Additionally, a carbon synchronizer was added to improve shifting into 4th gear. The MT uses new low-viscosity oil and bearings for smooth shifting operability with the higher torque output of the 2.4L boxer engine.
For the Automatic Transmission (AT), when in Sport mode, the AT senses brake and accelerator operation and vehicle behavior to automatically shift into the optimal gear, bringing drivers the control they want. Additional clutch discs and a new high-capacity torque converter allow for smooth delivery of the engine’s added power.

That's the same article as you posted before but I happened to see this https://motor-fan.jp/mf/article/6950/ one at the bottom which touches upon some of the changes as follows (auto-translated):
So there has been some modification of the synchomesh!
I read an article some time ago that went into the efforts of the engineers to target a 'sporty' feeling shift and how they were satisfied they did a good job which I found curious since so many of us were unpleased. Score +1 for upgrading to the GR86 🙂
Some further mention of the AT changes:

Brilliant. This is the post I was after, cheers.
In the Ken Gushi video he touches upon the shifter feel mentioning that the linkages have been changed but I'd love to get some more specific details on that. Especially the synchros as they're what I'm led to believe are giving some of us that unsatisfactory 3rd>2nd change. 1st to 2nd is a bit hit and miss for me as well though 2nd>3rd is v slick on mine. Improvements in shifting I think I'd care for even more than engine improvements.

Deacon I could've done with your 4.8 final drive on the way back though. Either that or get back in the gym to get more flexibility in my clutching leg. I don't see that listed at Tegiwai or on eBay though 🤔

Yes I read all of that too.
I think that we can get hung up on figures and measurable gains on a dyno. How a motor behaves to changes in driver throttle input isn't about peak CFM, or peak HP gain, it's about how the intake behaves at that instant. That is where the gains that I have now are. It has more mid range torque and it is more responsive to on / off throttle. It is faster and stronger everywhere but I can't say for sure if it makes more peak power. Maybe I will take it to Abbey and see.
The noise with the TRD intake is somewhat less than the with stock noise generator thingy but louder than the stock intake with the nose generator disabled.

Feemono reacted to Stan Hawrylak in Lightweight pulleys - how effective?
Not sure about the man maths, but the reduce rotating mass route has worked for me. If you're going to reduce rotating mass, you're best off reducing it everywhere you can so you can feel the cumulative effect, rather than just doing pulleys etc which you 're probably not going to notice much. On my car I've got the pulley kit, flywheel, carbon prop and lighter wheels (although oem wheels already light). They're probably all worth a few wheel hp each. The prop is reckoned to be about 5 whp, not a lot but as I say combined with the others, makes a difference. More throttle response, better pickup. If you shorten the final drive as well, then you've got so much more push out of the turns. The standard ratios are too wide for an NA. I remember a Toyota engineer saying the ratios had been tuned for 'environmental performance'!!
Doing TSS last year, some of the speeds I was pulling on the straights weren't far behind the forced induction crowd. There's more you can do of course, filter, intake, header, exhaust, power blocks. It's possible to make an NA go quickly but to do it properly might cost you as much as forced induction!

Feemono got a reaction from MPS in Brake Pedal Effort??
Coming to my 2017 GT86 with 9k on the clock I was a little bothered by the lack of initial bite but having said that I disliked the newer cars I've had in the past with v bitey initial braking.
For me it's more of a confidence thing as I like to be able to brush off a little speed without fully digging into the pedal. I've no reservations about the ultimate stopping power but again, the lack of initial bite isn't as I'd care for with my driving style.
