Squealing only when backing up

Recommended Posts

Hey guys recently just had to tighten my tie rods up and now when I am going straight back my car is making a loud squealing noise, it's only when I'm going straight back whether the car is running or just in neutral and doesn't do it at all going forward. I thought maybe I over tightened my tie rods so I loosened them a bit and re torqued them but it's still doing it so I loosened them a little more and nothing changed. I am completely lost as to what this could be or why it's only happening when the car is moving straight backwards, nothing is rubbing or scraping. Anyone know what it possibly could be or what I should check?

Dust shields? Very easy to knock one and bend it inwards towards the disc. If its the edge of a shield touching the disc then that would explain no noticeable noise going forward but squealing going backwards.

If you jack up the car and turn the wheels either direction by hand you should be able to make the noise happen again.

Why did you have to tighten your tie rods, had they been replaced? It's my guess that in doing so you've affected the toe alignment of the front wheels, causing the tyres to scrub, but perhaps the tread pattern means they only squeal in one direction.
