Tuning Developments NA KIT + stock exhaust

Recommended Posts

Review on Tuning Developments NA KIT + stock exhaust.

I drove 200 miles to meet Mike at TD today so had plenty of time to remind myself how the car drives stock. I drove another 200 miles home after. This is my review, hopefully it can help somebody else decide if they want to do the same one day.

NA KIT, UEL Header.

With the stock exhaust (except the header and overpipe) the car is barely louder than stock, the exhaust tone changed however.

On my drive home most of it was motorway driving so 70mph at 3000RPM gear 6... the car felt like a different car in that situation, the only way to describe it is the car felt like it had lost 100kg of weight, or something like that. It felt really throwable if that makes sense, or like someone had attached rope to the front of it and was pulling it lol.

Another big thing you will notice is... imagine a drag race ... when you accelerate in gear 1... 0mph to 25mph, as you start at 0RPM and go to 7000RPM you will notice the 0-4000RPM range will be much more aggressive, my tyres smelt as a result once I got home😂. Once you enter gear 2 at 25MPH you will already be at 4000RPM thus the improvement will be less noticeable.

if however you were at 3000RPM in gear 2 then you would feel the increase just like you did in gear 1.

the 20ish% more torque low end makes the car feel very light and agile.

on my drive home I kept finding myself getting to 100Kmph* by accident because the car can pick up so much faster in gear 6 at 3000RPM. Not good since the m6 has so many speed cameras😂

Mike himself was lovely and for 3 hours sat in his office and answered all my random questions until my car was finished.

I have done 210 miles with the kit 190 being motorway driving. If I think of anything useful to add later I will.

—————————stuff I added later————————

I feel that from 0miles to 300miles after the install the kit keeps improving both the sound of the exhaust and feel of the drive. Like wearing in leather shoes. Don’t know if this is true but it’s how it felt to me.

Something which pleasantly surprised me was that the kit made the exhaust smell nice, you know like a strong petrol smell. That which you smell from a straight piped car. I never considered this when buying it but a pleasant extra lol.

The 5mph to 30mph gear 1 pull makes it worth it by itself it makes me laugh how that changed so much.

I feel not having to be at 5000 rpm to feel power inspires confidence in me driving, not a dangerous confidence but I just feel like I don’t have to be on the limit to get power sort of confidence. I also rarely even go to 6000rpm as I don’t need to be squeezing power from the car. That could be seen as a reliability gain?

Nice to see the impact when nothing has been done downwind of that. 12 whp gain isn't bad going for still catalysed and with a nice 10-20 lbft improvement in the convenient range. In practice, a ~10% increase in torque at 3500 rpm is very much like the car weighing ~100kg less, albeit at the cost of a bit more fuel.

Edit: kmh, I knew it!

I'm sure you meant to say that you could have got to 100mph all too easily. Just in case anyone were to take you at your word and would like to spoil your enjoyment.

Yeah a lot of people when I did my research had both so it was harder to see with a stock exhaust.

oh my bad I meant kmph thankyou😂

Hey jay,

Awesome to hear youre enjoying the na package and that your car is back on the road, was wondering as we're a similar age, did u declare it to admiral? Was wondering how much they would charge extra for that kinda thing.

Cheers

You must declare this mod to your insurance or they will refuse any claim you may make and cancel your policy.

Usually cheapest to make changes when you are renewing your poicy rather than changing midway through when they could charge anything they like or even cancel the policy if they dont cover modified cars.

(PS I have a NA package on my car and its great but did the change at renewal when I went to Adrian Flux).

Yes i understand this, I have all my mods declared, but the reality is not everyone does declare them, especially at a younger age.

Nevertheless was hoping to just get a ballpark of how much the increase in premium was from a tune. (Of course, I wouldn't even be asking this if I didn't declare my mods haha!)

Hey, I haven’t declared it yet, when I do I will tell you what it costs extra for you though!

I was insured through a broker (Chris Knott and then Adrian Flux) whilst mine had the NA tune.  Neither of those wanted anything extra to cover the NA tune.  Up to 10% extra bhp was free.  If you're old enough and have owned your car for at least a year, I found those two cheaper even without modifications.

Ah interesting, im still only 21 so might need to wait a bit until I can get specialist insurance. Adrian flux wanted 4500 just to be insured on the stock gt86. Currently with admiral and theyre ok with mods but i reckon will cost a lot if i wanted to do a tune, was £60 just for my exhaust. Will look at those companies around renewal though, maybe after a year the price will go down as you say.

Well if you do have to wait a bit, you can always console yourself with the fact that you're doing fairly ok already at 21 driving a stock 86.

Got my first car at 25. A 45bhp 1 litre Polo 🤣

100% i know that haha!! I'm very lucky indeed, was only doable because of the insurance prices, in fact for some reason it worked out cheaper than insuring my 1.2 polo i had just before this!

Most other cars i was looking at, like a focus st3 were upwards of 2.5k to insure!

And there is a good reason to it. Not many people crash these cars. The lower the accidents or thefts, the lesser the risk.

BTW, Admiral charged me 25£ additionally for the TD manifold and Remap. So it's worth asking and is not a big premium.

Yes indeed I know that also, thats partly why i picked this car, and also caus drivers of gt86s/brzs probably have a lot better reputation than drivers of st3s. Im defintely on the more mature side for my age so I'd like to affiliate myself with the former group of drivers!

Oh wow only 25£, may be worth a go then when i have the £££ saved up for it, thanks for the info

That's shocking!  Weirdly I've just been getting quotes for another car; Admiral wanted £495 and Flux wanted over £1000.  I'm 41!  So it seems you need the right circumstances to hit their sweet spot.

From what others have said you may not get hit too hard, and it's always worth calling Admiral and asking them to advise you what the premium would be so that you know beforehand.  They should be able to tell you whether they'll cover it, and how much it will cost.

I can highly recommend the NA package from TD, there is a good reason why so many owners have gone down that route 👍

Insurance is so variable. For my 2015 gt-86 I pay under £300 business class 1 which is less than we pay for our other car a 2018 Yaris icon tech lol.

On my gen7 celica going from NA to supercharged with 275bhp cost £25 extra. I thought at first they had just quoted me the admin charge but nope that was all in.

A bit older than you and a bit longer no claims but that doesn't matter much. lol.

It is an add on which works as a fixed fee with Admiral as the power gain is less than 10%. You will be lucky to gain 15 bhp.

How much is your car worth do you think Jay Bamrah?

I bought it for 14k in December then crashed it and had it repaired but my dad said it isn’t a CAT car so I don’t know know? Why do you ask?

All because you tried to go sideways on public roads Learn that on a track as a drift day!

Power corrupts , absolute power corrupts absolutely. So stay stock and learn the car. It's plenty for now.

The cancelled insurance was speeding with a black box which also lost me a year of  no claims. The rest is though yeah, i decided after this one I am going to do drift days like you said. After how much a ball ache this repair process had been.
