GT86 Severe Knocking Sound

Ironically my last BMW I bought, the timing chain went after I drove it home from dealers but that was at 70k miles. I seemed to be cursed with timing chain issues 😨

Not doing  the timing chain properly? Like to know a bit more detail but looks like they will fix it at their cost which is a good result for you

Apparently its being investigated. I asked multiple questions but I could sense he was weary saying too much but basically said it was 'left loose' Multiple photographs have been taken and it's being looked into by Toyota GB and the 2 dealerships. Getting an update end of week I was informed.

If he was reluctant to talk sorry but in my books another recall fail from blocked oil ways I just can’t see if the timing chain assembly was loose it would run that long but stranger things can happen 🤔

I've had the timing chain go on my Celica and that was months and several thousand miles after any work was done it on the engine. It only needs it to jump one tooth for the engine to sound rough but stil function but the tensioner could be keeping it just about in check and may only occur when a combination of things happen. Hard acceleration, engine braking, and just tips the ability of the tensioner to counter the sudden slack.

Yer I was losing sleep at the thought of the potential bill and loosing the car as I adore it. God knows how long it will take to fix as I don't even know if they would stock half the parts here including the block? They have had it for basically a month now 😕

The bizarre thing with the chain going on mine was there was no warning, no engine gulping or anything, just a hideous knocking sound and game over. Luckily about 100 metres from my drive!

Yes I have wondered this. Like are they covering the fact it was yet another botched valve recall job with too much sealant or whatever starving the engine? Either way it's obvious the techs need better training on boxer engines

Was told by the people who were supposed to be doing mine training had been provided then they had a engine fail and blamed it on oil pump failure ☹️

I assume you have a courtesy car? May be worth chasing Toyota on that if not as this is a fault by one of their techs that has left you shafted.

Worth a chase up for an update too. Easy to let the car sit when theres no drive to fix it being applied ;)

You will get the level of service you ask for. I would suggest, now that they have a clear idea that the fault is not yours - I would assertively ask for a GT86 courtesy car, and for a clear timeframe of when your car will be returned repaired, and I would request a brand new engine or an alternative car.

If you don't ask, you will not get.

Exactly, a courtesy or hire car burning money by the day will focus their minds.

Over a month now and still sign of a definitive diagnosis? I wouldn’t be happy about this at all. Apparently these latest engines use an awful lot of sealant and it must be applied in exactly the right places to avoid further damage. You should keep the pressure on the service manager to push this through otherwise it will take a back seat in their car park.

Latest update. So the service manager has basically said the dealership who did the recall and Toyota GB are currently in talks for who will be paying the bill. Needs a new engine which is no surprise.

I've chased Toyota customer relations basically asking them to escalate it and what the situation is with a courtesy car like you guys have mentioned as there's no way I will be getting this back this year I'd imagine with having to get parts etc. 

I've asked why the problem occurred regarding timing chain error like was it an apprentice working on it etc but they don't know apparently! 😐

Good to hear it is going in the right direction with them footing the bill.

 

As for the time scale once you have a courtesy car the ball is in your court as you have an asset costing them money as has been said above. When I had trouble with my recall I already had their new Lexus demonstrator luckily. So it was a good bargaining chip :lol:

Good that they're taking responsibility. Again, I stress - the help you get in this situation is 100% down to what you ask for, and how much you push. They want to give you nothing extra, and for you to suffer silently (nothing personal, it's just the way business works). I'd be calling daily, politely pointing out that I am without my sports car due to their error and that I am unhappy and would like a resolution ASAP. - MENTION the owners/drivers club forums. I would push for a GT86 courtesy car, personally. I would point out that the only acceptable alternative would be an immediate lumpsum to cover the market value of the car plus a fair daily charge for time without it to-date - so you can return yourself to the situation you were in prior to their mistake.

Thanks for your advice and yer I will mention this forum. I'm in touch with customer relations just waiting for an update and what they are going to do about a courtesy car. Phonecalls to follow to keep the pressure on!

Latest update. So after a month now and emails and calls back and forth with me basically chasing for what the hell is going on this is the latest. 

Basically Toyota as a 'gesture of goodwill' have reduced the price of the fix from 16K to 7K! They are claiming that as its been over a year since the recall ( even though only 2k miles has been put on it since ) they are not taking full responsibility even though I was told it was technician error with the timing chain not being put back on correctly. 

I have spoken to a local solicitors who said I could have a case but I would need to have a competent independent automotive engineer assessor look at the engine before I proceed basically. 

In the meantime I have complained directly to the Customer Services Director basically arguing my case as it's quite frankly absurd this 'gesture of goodwill'  

Currently a Specialist Case Manager is looking into this fiasco and will get back to me asap.

Thats not the outcome we was all hoping for. 

Sadly i had the same thing with my problem where they footed most of the bill not all of it. Mine was not as expensive as yours so i didn't involve a solicitor etc and settled. I did chase them further but all communication i got at that point was that that once the decision is made it was final on their part. Be intersting to hear how you get on from here. I wish you the best luck. 

Did you get a courtesy car? If you have a dealer asset they may help you chase to get it reaolved asap.

So basically it’s their fault but not all of it shame this country has in this case poor consumer protection a class action law suit has been filed in the USA for post recall failures it’s that bad over there

Yer i remember your previous post of you situation. No courtesy car at all although it was mentioned they were looking into what they could do for me. I will fight this as much as I can as it's just unfeasible me paying that amount and I simply don't think I should have to.

Yer I've checked but they don't cover anything regarding a contract involving a motor vehicle. I think if they are stubborn with me paying, it would be cheaper to get in touch with a solicitors but god knows what fees that would be to get a  competent independent automotive engineer assessor look at the engine before I even begin.

Update - All feedback greatly appreciated

So basically Toyota have stated they are not budging on the 7k cost as a gesture of goodwill even though it's been a fault by a tech with the timing chain replacement. There excuse is -

As I hope you will appreciate, we have no way of knowing what has happened to your vehicle between the completion of the recall and the date you took ownership and , whilst I respect the advice you have been given, the manufacturer's warranty on your vehicle has expired. 

My next step is to basically ask them to pay the current market value of the car if it was running which would be about 10-11k and my reasons for this are - it will cost them 16k to fix and they are saying they will reduce cost by 9k so wouldn't it make sense for them to pay me off 10k for example instead of spending 16k to repair it? Or will that 16k include labour ? 

I mean if I pay this 7k that's a total of 18.5k I've paid for a 2013 when I could get a much more recent model for that! 

Following this I have been in touch with an IAEA Qualified Engineer to look at the engine and do a report before I get back in touch with my local solicitors but I mean i could end up paying huge fees to lose my case realistically. 

Honestly this has been one of the most stressful situations I've ever been in and I've served in Afghan ! FML
